A 3331 leaves you very vulnerable down the flanks because it’ll stretch the back 3 right across especially when you have 3 players who want to be central in midfield.

It's not a lot different to how we line up now, our CB's are normally wide anyway.

And we are pretty vulnerable down the flanks this would make it a lot worse.

Just don’t see poch doing anything radical like that anyway.

It’ll be a 4231/4133 next season imo

Thinking about it, if Dier was in the middle with Eriksen and Grealish either side, when in defence, Dier could drop back into CB with the 2 wider CBs moving into the full back positions creating a back four. When attacking, Eriksen and Grealish could move into wide midfield positions to offer an option (not both at the same time) on occasion.

A weakness would be long, diagonal passes on the quick counter but Sanchez pace to gwt across coukd nullify that threat.

If we put it this why De Ligt wouldn’t be costing us anything because the money we get for Toby goes straight into him.

So in reality we are just replacing Toby for De Ligt.

Right now losing Toby and not replacing him will be bad because imo Foyth doesn’t really do it for me and Dier moving back takes away a DM option.

I’m very interested to see how this all pans out
If we were replacing Toby with a back up to Sanchez and Verts, we could do so for a lot less than 50 mil.

We're not really though, Poch has already done it, full backs push forward regardless and leave a lot of space in behind but the CB's cover that anyway.

Regardless what i'm saying is that we have already lined up like that in plenty of matches in the past, even when we played a 4-2-3-1 or whatever the average positions on the pitch resembled more of a 3-3-3-1, and we change it around during the match. We're not as rigid as other teams who deploy 4-2-3-1.

Well Toby is currently the back up but yes we can get loads of players for minimal cost heck I’ll do it for free BUT De Ligt is currently the player we want and wouldn’t cost more than we will get for Toby.

We are definitely a fluid team that’s for sure but we wouldn’t ever going into a match without recognised full backs. So if we did the 3331 the middle 3 would be 2 full backs either side of Dier/Wanyama.

I didn't say we did though?

And I never said YOU did but it’s what the original post that got this conversation going

Lloris
Toby Sanchez Verts
Dier Eriksen Dembele
Lucas Alli Son
Kane

Hence why I said in that 3331 it’ll be very vulnerable down the flanks ??

We lined up in 3-3-3-1 at points last season with Winks being the pivot.
I was thinking about this yesterday and why we have so much interest in wingers...
I think a 3-2-4-1 or3-2-3-2 could work. with Dier/winks and Wanyama/Davies as the holding and shuttling players keeping a deeper position in the half space and making safe passes yo keep things ticking.

Modern full backs push so high up, managers want faster and more powrful wingbacks to beat them. Think outside the box and a more traditional winger is obviously more equipped for that job.

Imagine a line up like this against a strong opponent:

Lloris

De Ligt/Toby -------- Sanchez-------- Verts
Dier/Winks------------Davies/Wanyama
Lucas/Son--Dele -- Eriksen --Martial/Zaha
Kane
All your creativity's coming from forward areas, pushing the defense back and allowing us to dominate possession. Could work, could be rubbish, in which case you bring on Trippier and go to a tradtional full back formation.
