They've misspelt Davies as Davis I see .Weird thing , I've never heard an English commentator call Davies , Davies . Its always 'Davis' ....and no, foreign speaking commentators ever get it wrong . Annoying indeed .
Should be "Dayveez", right?

Can anyone recall the first time we went 3 at the back with wing backs this season? I want to look some stuff up but can't remember when we first tried it. Wasn't it around the new year?

Wasn't sure where to post his, so have bumped an old tactics thread.

With reports/ITK stating that IF Toby leaves we will try and bring in de Ligt, who will cost upwards of 50mil, it appears we will be looking to play 3 at the back nest season, as I doubt we will spend that much on a back up, plus one of the ITKs mentioned it was Pochs intention.

On top of this Hercs mentioned that the formation we will be playing will surprise a lot and with us being linked to Grealish, a wide Left forward left (Martial) and right midfielders (Zaha & Malcom) its got me thinking, perhaps we will be playing 3-3-3-1 next season.

When Bielsa played this formation, he usually used the 2 full backs playing as wide DMs, but I could see Poch using DMs/CMs here. It would be risky but would explain why we are being linked with so many AMs. Here's what it could look like.

Lloris
Toby Sanchez Verts
Dier Eriksen Dembele
Lucas Alli Son
Kane

Vorm
Foyth CCV Davies
Wanyama Grealish Winks
AMR Lamela W/Fdw
???

My bet is something like this ( I’m sticking to players we have now )

Lloris
Trippier Sanchez Verts Davies
Dier
Eriksen Dele
Moura Kane Son

I don't think we'll play three at the back. Maybe the odd game. I think Sanchez, Verts, De Ligt would all be rotated in and out. I posted something in the transfer forum yesterday on this, regarding a Dembele replacement:

--------------------------------------------------------------------

let's say for arguments sake, we adopt this:

It's really just the holding position we'll need an out and out defensive mid in Dier/Wanyama. The other midfielders can be more of a box to box/playmaker type attacking the space behind Kane. So we may get a midfielder, he just may not be the strong dominating type as Dembele, rather a less physical, more technical player like Winks. Just throwing ideas about.

I've been wanting to see us play that formation and line up since we signed Lucas but I don't think we would spend 50m on a back up CB and I don't think that is a formation that would "surprise a lot of people" as @Hercules put it.

I'm not sure De Ligt should be viewed simply as backup. I see him as someone who will be slowly integrated in to the team. By the time he's 21, Verts will be coming to end of his career. Only Poch knows what he has in store ofc.

Maybe, and i would love us to play that line up, but Poch doesn't usually rotate the CBs though, and we played 3 at the back until Toby's injury and don't look to decrease the number of CBs in the squad.

I'm under the impression that Foyth is planned/hoped to be Verts long term successor.

We also have what, five proper attacking mids? we're linked with Grealish and Zaha/Martial. Would seem a rather top heavy squad to be aiming for a three at the back formation I would have thought. In any case, i'm intrigued to see how we will line up next season.

Yeah that may be the case. Personally never been much of a fan of the three at the back formation, yes it allows the wing backs to bomb forward etc, but the advantage of the 4-2-3-1 is you already have 4 players high up the pitch (3 attacking mids + Kane) to put pressure on the oppositions defence and perform the high press. It's a very flexible system which I like. All systems have their pro's and con's of course. Interesting to see how Poch evolves things and whether we switch to a single pivot or something else.

Yes, hence my intrigue with the possibility of a switch to 3-3-3-1 since Hercs comment that out formation will surprise alot of people. It allows for 3 at the back whilst keeping 3 AMs behind the striker, albeit with slightly wider starting positions for the 2 wider AMs.

If we put it this why De Ligt wouldn’t be costing us anything because the money we get for Toby goes straight into him.

So in reality we are just replacing Toby for De Ligt.

Right now losing Toby and not replacing him will be bad because imo Foyth doesn’t really do it for me and Dier moving back takes away a DM option.

I’m very interested to see how this all pans out

Yeah sorry I've just read your 3-3-3-1 post properly, I see what you're getting at. It's an interesting thought.

A 3331 leaves you very vulnerable down the flanks because it’ll stretch the back 3 right across especially when you have 3 players who want to be central in midfield.
