Simply explains why private equity firms may have had an interest in investing in Spurs - to fund the stadium in exchange for an equity position with the club, not to purchase the club outright.
But again, nothing to do with what the Sunday Time article was talking about

the club is currently valued at about 1 billion dollars by Forbes, as of June 2017. I assume that includes the new stadium which comes with about 400m equity.

Since the cost of building the stadium (and surrounds) is over $1bn then the club is valued over that. The training ground alone cost $100m.

Article talks about a Private Investment fund looking to make an investment in Spurs - don't assume that the business reporter knows the intent behind the investment.

Spurs responded by acknowledging that they have had a number of conversations - presumably including this group - but that all such discussions were around funding options for the stadium. Ultimately Spurs opted for Bank funding instead of private equity funding - thus, there are no current discussions to sell any portion of the club. (Had Spurs gone the private equity route, it would have involved selling a portion of the team, in exchange for the cash infusion to complete the stadium.)

tl; dr - There are no on-going negotiations to sell any part of the team. There had been some negotiations in the past, but Spurs chose a different option.

Well, if the $1bn is predominantly borrowed then it is neutral on the balance sheet. If my whelk stall is worth £100 as a multiple of weekly profit, and I borrow another £100 from Big Dave with my stall as collateral, the enterprise is still only worth £100. In fact, it's the future whelk sales that the VCs would like, because forward revenue can be leveraged right now.

both of those projects have debt associated with them that any buyer takes on. Thus an 800m pound stadium with 400m pounds financing is worth 400m pounds, or less since the buyer also takes on the interest. I dont know how Forbes estimates the value of a sports franchise but I know they can do it better than me.

It would not surprise me in the least if ENIC sells the Club once the new stadium is up and running, but for far more than a billion.

Whoever buys it though is likely to want it to be a success, invest in the team and drive it forward. I can see no issue with that because if that much money is going to be invested then we will stand shoulder to shoulder with the top teams in European football.

This rumour does the rounds at least twice a year i'd ignore it it's purely because nobody has managed to find out if we are actually buying or selling any players this window.
Besides which isn't this the same group that's preparing to run for office at the next US elections?

All this Takeover talk was probably caused by some agent dude trying to get Levy to open his wallet to buy some players.

Just a theory, please don't quote me.

Seems pretty clear that there were talks with these guys when looking into stadium funding, but didn't go down that route.

This Ironiq rumor has been around in one form or another for 3 years. I would be ironic if there was nothing at all to it.

If that's why then they'd be better off just building a purpose built NFL stadium and negotiating with the NFL from there. Why spend 2bn on Spurs when you could spend less than half that just building a stadium if all you're after is an NFL franchise

Because you get an NFL franchise and a Premier league football team. double bubble

Nope. It is not a given that an NFL team will a) be based in England and b) play in the new stadium. Also, it is highly possible for both to have different owners.

But that's a debate for another thread.....

Bearing in mind how arduous Levy apparently is to negotiate player deals with, surely any deal to sell the club would be on some kind of epic level that would cause even the most hardened negotiator to age prematurely.
