When Dembele finally moves on we will all be saying we need another Demebele
I don't even want to think about what a hole Moussa leaving is going to create. The man is a beast of a player & I'm going to miss not seeing him in a Spurs shirt, he never gives the ball away 1,2,3,4 ooh Moussa Dembele, oooh he's silkier than Pele .....

I vaguely remember an itk (maybe Herc?) stressing that Poch wants to be flexible when it comes for formation this season. We're often very predictable (especially against teams that put 11 behind the ball) and signing players who can play multiple roles will help that. Doing that would definitely point towards at least a minor formation/system change, something that is very common amongst teams at this level. I may be wrong about that itk though.
Also, I'm not sure why you think I'm confident we'll sign a quality CM? I didn't say anything like that in that post, never said anything about replacing quality with quality being an unfair expectation either.
I've definitely seen people here and other places want a "like-for-like" replacement for Dembele too. The guy whose post I replied to said pretty much exactly that, actually.
For sure, I see that now mate! Apologies for jumping to the wrong conclusions. Personally id love to see us experiment with 433 with Eriksen and Dele starting in a deeper role. Not sure how practicable that formation would be, but I think it would be exciting. Perhaps it would be easier to integrate a new midfield signing into a 3 rather than a 2?

Sign him up...21 and with top class ability, rough round the edges but he'll only grow with Poch stroking his gonads...

Dembele has great power and it is not easy to get the ball off of but I have to say he hardly ever scores a goal or practically never creates a goal scoring pass and to my eyes he is massively overated
There are plenty out there if you just want a spoiler which is what Dembele is

Dembele is way more than a spoiler and while I understand that life is easiest when quantified by stats like goals and assists there is so much more to football than that. Dembele has been central to Poch’s style of play with his ability to carry the ball enabling us to transition rapidly through the heart of the opposition. He isn’t perfect and some times could be more productive in the final third but his transition through strength and dribbling ability in the first two thirds is unparalleled. That isn’t to say we can’t or shouldn’t replace him but we will play differently just as we did when he replaced Modric.

Let's hope we don't play in the same way we did when we lost Modric! Dembele will be a loss but it is a chance to sign someone who can transition the ball faster and that is more of a dynamic passer. Dembele has great passing ability but within a certain spectrum. Whether Ndombele is it or not is another matter.

Dembele doesn't transition rapidly.

Dembele is all about ball retention. If the other team dont have the ball they cant score.

Yeah that's great but we're usually playing against weaker teams sitting back. It drives me mad watching him slowly dribble up the pitch to the opposition area and lay it off to someone else. By the time he gets there, the other team have had enough time to all get back and we have 11 men to beat against once again. Personally can't wait until he's sold and we can get someone in who can pass it forward quickly to exploit space.

Entirely agree with this. Whilst I have never ever seen a player of Dembele's ability to shield the ball and beat the first man, he appears to do so at a glacial pace, when sometimes we would be better served passing the ball on quicker. There is so much counter attacking football these days, that the best opportunities arise at the immediate point of winning the ball and transitioning to attack before the opposing team get back in their defensive positions. Dembele gives the opposing teams too much time to get back by which point the openings have gone. I can't wait to see Winks get back to full fitness, he just seems a lot sharper in the pivot position

And yet at the same time we always play better when Dembele is in the team. It is frustrating when he moves the ball slowly but we will definitely miss him when he is gone.

The guy is a man mountain, and yes sometimes he catches the eye as a colossus in the middle of the pitch. Pace was never his strength so personally I still feel he has some good years ahead of him and would keep him in the squad (with his injury record he needs rotation anyway to keep fresh) but I think our best future is without him in the starting line-up. Sadly the moment that lingers longest in my mind is him needlessly gifting possession away against Utd which led to their equalising goal in the FA cup semi final... until that moment we were a goal up and cruising, and if we managed to get through that game I would have been confident of our result against Chelsea in the final. I know you can't begrudge one player for one mistake, but like I said that moment is what I most remember Dembele for

Pardon my ignorance (and 'off topic'-ness), but is Wyscout something to look at when checking out players we are linked to, or is it too technical? I see they have a 14 day trial.
It's a scouting platform for players & team tactical analysis.. they will be launching a platform for general public soon..

I agree but if we're smart we can get a replacement that fits into our team better even if they don't have all his attributes. We need a smart, quick passer deep in midfield more than anything.

I don't think a midfield 3 of Wanyama/Dier, Eriksen, and Alli would be ideal.
