Luka Modric has started running again after injury but remains out of the running for Thursday night's UEFA Cup Group D match against NEC Nijmegen in Holland.

The midfielder is on his way back after suffering a groin strain at Fulham on November 15 but is not yet ready for a return to action.

Giovani remains out with his ankle sprain while Alan Hutton faces a spell on the sidelines with a foot injury (see below).

Ledley King has not travelled to Holland and Gilberto also misses out after sustaining a minor hamstring tear during Monday's reserve team encounter against Stoke.

Roman Pavlyuchenko and Vedran Corluka are cup-tied and boss Harry Redknapp has included five youngsters in the squad in John Bostock - who played in our last group match against Dinamo Zagreb - Ryan Mason, Adam Smith, Jonathan Obika and Yaser Kasim.

"The younger lads are here, they are involved and I'll have a close look at them in training," said Harry.

"Some of them are new to me as my concentration has been on the first team squad but I watched the Under-18s play Coventry after we had trained on Saturday."

Alan Hutton is set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines after suffering a fracture in his right foot.

The Scottish international defender will now undergo surgery and faces up to five months out of action.

Hutton picked up the injury at the start of the season but returned last month and played 90 minutes for Scotland against Argentina last week.

Ramos is such a tosser for failing to include Stalteri, Rocha, Taarabt, Ghaly and KPB in our squad. Mason is far too young.

Mason won't necessarily play, but it'll be good for him, Kasim, Smith and Obika to travel with the squad...

Yup, not having those FIVE players in a much depleted squad could cost us. Can we include them after the group stage?

I think our youngsters and Bostock especially will be fine.
    0-2 me thinks.

Sorry but the likes of Stalteri, Rocha, Boeteng, Ghaly and Taarabt haven't been involved at all this season (aside from a brief cameo from Boeteng) so i dont see their loss as a problem. Neither have even impressed for the reserves enough to even make the first team squad. This will be good for the youngsters to be involved with the first team squad. There are still enough senior players in the squad tonight.

I'm dissapointed in the way we brought Hutton back from injury though. I thought it was strange that he started against Stoke after only recently returning to injury. And to make matters worse, he played about 3 games in a week on his return. He should have played for the reserves first and been eased back into action gently. He hadn't hardly had any pre-season action as it was. Thank god we tied up the Corluka transfer in the end.

We are lucky to have the depth at right back. Corluka and Gunter can do the job. Zokora can kind of play there too.

Super Al - wishing you a successful op and a speedy recovery.

He may or may not come on, I guess it depends how the team are playing, but I would love Mason to get his chance. I've been following the u18's very closely, I always have done, and this kid is special. He is intelligent, can shoot from long range, has a nice little dribble on him and can pass the ball very nicely, and has a lick of pace to go with it.

And how is 18 too young? Lennon broke into our first team at 18 and he was just as slight of stature as this kid. Mason has all the ability in the world from what I've seen, and if you are good enough, you are old enough.

All the players in there are good prospects and it would be great if at least one or two broke through one day. Smith is very quick and wide beyond his years, and gets stuck in despite his small frame. For Obika, read Jermaine Defoe with more midfield link up. And Kasim has a fair dose of technique, it just needs honing.

As for Bostock, at a lesser premiership club I reckon he's be a first teamer or at least a regular on the bench.

If Harry saw the Under 18s against Coventry, I doubt whether he would include any of their defenders. On a serious note, I thought Smith looked to have potential in the pre-season tournament.

I am not usre how it works, but tt may have something to do with the fact that Stalteri, Rocha, Boeteng, Ghaly and Taarabt were not registered so he has to look at brining in players from the youth team

I think its great that we are finally using our youth team players, they never get a look in.

How are we ever going to know if they are good enough if they never get a chance, sending them to lower league sides is not doing the trick, they pick up experience but play with technically inferior players, it might toughen them up but it does not make them better.

I can only think of Ledley and O'Hara who have through our set up in recent seasons. Phil Ifill is a classic example of how our young talent seems to get lost.

Anyone know how long GDS is out, i would like to see him get a go now the team is playing better, he always looked lively when he came on, and that was when we were really bad..........
  11. grazinho1
Stalteri is a right back as well, we`re well covered there.
  12. truespur
really wanna see mason, bostock and smith come through
  13. davidmatzdorf
OK, here's an irritating question: if we can't play Rocha, Ghaly, Stalteri, et al., because we didn't register them for the UEFA Cup squad, how is it that we can play Mason, Bostock & Smith [sounds like a small-town law firm]?

Is there a free-pass exemption from pre-registration for youth team players? Or perhaps Harry would just rather play the kids.
  14. truespur
ramos and co didnt register them at all while the kids in the squad were put on the uefa b list.... i think
  15. GetSpurredOn
We have as a set of fans on here complained over and over about how youth players at our club don't get a chance, and now Redknapp is using some of them, people are complaining they're too young and not ready? Damned if you, damned if you don't.
Smith came on in the pre-season tournament, against Dortmund I think, and he looked the business, set up a goal I beleive. If they are good enough then let them loose, that's how Redknapp uncovered Lampard, Joe Cole, Defoe, Carrick etc.
  16. Coyboy
Yea that's right, there is a whole set of players on the 'B list. I think we could have done with all of the forgotten five tonight, at least on the bench, it is good to see Mason and Obika there but.
  17. BringBack_leGin
hey dm. players 18 or under need not be registered.
