    TEAM NEWS:

Aaron Lennon is out of Wednesday night’s Carling Cup quarter-final against Southend United at White Hart Lane.

The winger hasn’t recovered in time after missing Sunday’s win at Manchester City with inflammation on his knee.

Hossam Ghaly is also sidelined, Didier Zokora is suspended while Jermaine Jenas and Robbie Keane are recovering from ankle and knee injuries respectively.

Martin Jol reported on Tuesday afternoon: “Aaron is still not 100 per cent so he will be out, he’s not quite fit enough to be in the squad tomorrow and we’ll have another look on Friday for the Newcastle game.

“Hossam Ghaly had a dead leg at Manchester City and a knock on his back, so he’s not in the squad. Robbie Keane is doing well but both he and Jermaine Jenas are both out for another couple of weeks.

“Didier Zokora is also out suspended, he’ll be back in consideration for Newcastle.” Michael Dawson returns after a one-match ban.

  1. GetSpurredOn
Cerny, Stalteri, Lee, Dawson, Davenport, Malbranque, Tainio, Huddlestone, O'Hara, Mido, Defoe. Subs: Robinson, Gardner, Ziegler, Murphy, Berbatov

    Steady Enough?
  2. xmastreeformation
Who is going to play on the right? Stalteri? Lee? Suggestions?
  3. steve
I'd play Gardner over Dawson, Ekotto over Lee and get Murphy and Davids in too......we need to rest the current 1st team for Newcastle.......
  4. NeverRed06
we shouldnt make too many changes as ww do need to win and its not like there is a second leg

    robinson
    stalteri dawson davenport lee
    malbranque tainio huddlestone ziegler
    mido defoe

bench: cerny, chimbonda, o'hara, murphy, berbatov
  5. chiveliyid
I'd fully rest some first team.

    Cerny
    Stalteri, Davenport, Dawson, Lee
    Murphy, Tainio, Hudds, Davids
    Mido, Defoe

Subs: Burch, Dervitte, Ziegler, Perkhart, O'Hara.

Give Robbo, King, Chimbo, Ekotto, Malbranque and Berbatov a break and tell the players in the squad that I'd shoot them if they loose. Harsh but fair, even with those players out it should be an easy win as long as the mentality of the players going out is right. The starting eleven have just got to be fully prepared for a fight, simple. As long as they are their superior class will come through. I'd like to see few reserve players enter the frey too!
  6. ravo
We can't rest too many players, as it's been made quite clear that we want to win this cup. These guys have already beaten Man U, who did the same thing.

Lee seems to be the current first choice LB in the eyes of BMJ.

    Robbo / Cerny
Chimbo (replace in 2nd) Dawson King (replace in 2nd) Benny
    Steed Teemu Thudd Murphy
    Mido Defoe

either replace Defoe or one of the midfielders as the third sub in the 2nd half.

Subs: The other GK, Stalty, Davenport, Davids / Reto, Berby

    COYS

I think we need to buy a couple of midfilders in Jan.
  8. WhippsX
I wouldn't use Gardner. He's too accident prone. Davids & Murphy should get an outing. We were given one of the easier teams, but we cannot afford any mistakes. We have an excellent chance to win this cup.

I'd be inclined to give squad players like stalteri, davenport (kings needs a rest), davids, ziegler & murphy a go tomorrow...

    Robbo
    Stalteri Daws Dav/Gardner Ekotto
    Malbranque Hudd Davids Murphy
    Defoe Mido

    Subs:Cerny,LYP,Tainio,Ziegler,Berbs

BMJ got some tough decisions to make...we must play a strong team capable of getting to the next round. However with Newcastle away on sat and another 4 games in 10 days its about making use of the talented squad we have at our disposal & resting key players for the long (hopefully) and demanding season ahead...

Cerny - Always plays in this cup
Stalteri - 1st choice RB last year, played a bit recently
Lee - 1st choice LB last year, played more often recently
    Dawson - Hasn't missed many
Davenport - Looks better game by game, more confidence
Malbranque - Getting back his sharpness, needs more games
Tainio - Injured recently, needs games to regain sharpness
Huddlestone - On a roll, needs to dominate this game
O'Hara - Token youngster, good form preseason/in reserves
Defoe - Looking sharper, goals here will help
Mido - Needs games to get fit again, goals help confidence

    Subs
    Robinson - Enough Said
Gardner - Needs games, could replace Dawson 2nd Half
Ziegler - Deserves another chance, 2nd Half maybe?
Murphy - Will do a good job, but others need to play more
    Berbatov - Insurance Policy!

That looks strong enough to me. Plenty of experience and also gives games to those who need/deserve it. Rests Robinson, Chimbonda, Ekotto, King, Berbatov and gives the injured players like Jenas, Keane, Lennon, Ghaly Zokora(supended) more chance to recover hopefully knowing the team will win a place in the semi's for them to come back into contention for.

Why has Davids not been in any squads lately, is he injured or out of favour?
  11. OrangeTHFC
Was wondering that about him too.
Has Davids still his eyeproblems or what? Anyone?
  12. pistolP
And if we do get beaten with that team,i hope you will care less. For me, we should play near enough to full strenght squad as we can.
  13. alfiespurs
    Well stated Sir !

Listening to Charlton, we really need to be focussed and strong against southend. Lets not treat this as another Port Vale ! I really hope we get a good result and hope Chelsea v Newcastle goes into extra time and that those lot are tired for Saturday. I want victory against Bar Codes ! But any form of win against the Essex Boys will be great !
  14. jackhealy
Logically, we should play Malbranque on the right, and either O'Hara, Ziegler Murphy or Ekotto at left midfield. All of them excepf Murphy are left footed.
  15. Ali
I fully agree with this. Charlton were absolutely abject tonight, but you still don't expect a Prem team to get beaten at home by a League 2 team. We shouldn't take anything for granted against a team that has already beaten a full strength Man Utd. I want to win all our games as convincingly as possible. I want to win a cup.
  16. Ali
Just read your post alfiespurs after posting something almost identical! Charlton sounded beyond poor tonight. If I were a Charlton fan I'd want to kill myself about now. When (not if) they relegated, I don't see them coming up again ever! The Charlton board seem to be completely devoid of ideas now that Curbs has gone. Just shows how totally they relied on him. Curbs WAS Charlton. I can only imagine how the fans must have felt when they saw the Spammers beat Man U....
  17. DC_Boy
I'd go with GetSpurred's team - except Robbo for Cerny.
  18. mart_loves_me
Anyone know when the draw is for the semis ?
