Dembele won't play a game four days after his last. Don't think he can do it anymore.

We would be stupid to play Dembele vs Brighton as we need him vs city and the busy Xmas period especially now Toby and Sanchez are out and we need dier at cb for the next 2 games

Most important match is always the next match. Brighton and City are both worth 3 points if we win.

Every match is important but there has to be an element of forward planning. Iirc fergie said he used to pick teams 4/5 week in advance pending injuries.

With Lamela back, he really doesn't have to

Not sure I follow? The only reason sissoko get a game is because we are short in cm. He add a bit of physicality with Dembele and wanyama missing. Lamela/alli/eriken do not offer this amd play better further forward imo

Push Eriksen back a bit deeper. Lamela allows this to happen. Or give Foyth a run out and push Dier into CM. It really isn't worth playing Sissoko in CM (or anywhere for that matter). I admire his energy and resilience but he just isn't technically good enough for the way we play, and this impacts on our playing style. He's better coming on when we either have a decent margin and his athleticism works against tired legs or if we need a bulldozer out wide- even then his final delivery and lack of serious pace doesn't make us dangerous

I have a feeling pochettino will see it differently. I think sissoko does a solid if unspectacular job in cm

Lamela won't start until the cup game. As others have said, Brighton is more important than the City game.

We need Verts and Dier vs City - maybe we need to rest them both? Major risk, but maybe worth it. Imagine if Verts got a yellow and we had to play Foyth against their attack.... So, Davies at CB?
Vs Brighton:
Lloris
Aurier Foyth Davies KWP
Winks Sissoko
Lamela - Eriksen
Kane Son
Bench: Vorm Trippier Verts Dier Alli GKN Llorente
Sub off our forwards as soon as possible (Eriksen / Kane / Son)

Vs City:
Lloris
Trippier Dier Verts Rose
Winks Dembele
Eriksen - - Alli
Kane Son
Bench: Vorm Aurier Foyth Davies Lamela Sissoko Llorente

Brighton isn’t a ‘given’ victory, we have to earn it and to do that we need to play our strongest XI. There’s no point saying we can’t because Man C is more important, well it’s not. They’re gone, out of sight, we’re not catching them this season. Even with Toby, Wanyama and Sanchez we’d still not be expected to beat them given the outstanding form they’re in this season. We need to concentrate on getting 3pts against Brighton and then be happy with any form of positive result against City. The last thing we want to do is concentrate on City and drop a bollock against Brighton and end up with 1 or no points from 2 games.

The only player I’d rest is Dembele, it is imperative he is good to go vs City. It means sticking with a back 4 and I much prefer us in a back 3 but we don’t have the personnel with Sanchez and Toby out, so roll out the Xmas tree!!

Lloris

Aurier Foyth Vertonghen Rose

Winks Dier Eriksen

Son Dele

Kane

Subs : Gazza, Trippier, Davies, Sissoko, Lamela, Nkoudou, Llorente

I’d play Davies against Brighton and save Rose for City. To me him going up against Walker one against one is a possible way of exploiting City. Bring Walker’s ego into play, he’ll want to dominate his old mate, and we leave Son up in the space he’s vacated.

Time to switch the fullbacks around and have the two more talented/athletic players lined up to start against City.

Lloris; Trippier, Dier, Verts, Davies; Winks, Sissoko, Son, Lamela; Llorente, Kane

Give Eriksen and Dele a rest.

I don't think Dembele can play the midweek game after a full stint today. He certainly won't be able to play against Citeh at the weekend if he does play again. My money is on Sissoko starting alongside Winks, but he could drop Alli back in there and start Lamela.
I like this idea. Or a three man midfield with Winks, Alli and Eriksen. With Kane, Sonny and Lamela as a front three. That would keep Dembele fit for Saturday.

My XI :

Lloris,
Aurier, Dier, Vertonghen, Rose
Sissoko,Winks
Lamela, Dele, Son,
Kane

I would bench Dembele & Eriksen to be ready for City game.

Isn't verts on four yellow cards? If he is then we shouldn't play him against Brighton, play foyth instead.

No - Brighton a bigger game as more chance of winning no matter who we put out.

Win your next game.

City a freebie - happy with any result.

Strongest team v Brighton apart from resting Dembele. Might seem nuts, but the key to containing City is closing down Silva and de Bruyne and I think Sissoko might be a good option for that.

As others have said I think the fullback pairings might be split for this game with aurier/Davies starting against brighton And Trippier/Rose against City.
