Poch: “I don’t think we are realistic contenders in any competition”

Riot act!
I'm actually glad he said this. Because it's true. We didn't improve our team when our rivals did. It's hardly surprising. We just have to pray we can hold on to top four which I still believe we will.

We absolutely have to scrap for the top four this year. The players owe it to Poch, given how many of them he’s transformed. Then we’ll see where the cards lie next summer

Well, it really does seem like Chelsea, Liverpool and City are top 3. One of them would have to fuck up enormously as they are clearly the 3 best and most balanced squads at this point in time.

We are noticeably worse, leggy and have almost gone back to square one rather than building at all. Which means we’re up against Utd, Arsenal and whoever is this season’s dark horse for 4th. We need to start playing well quickly.

We’re now needing to beat Inter away to stop a full blown crisis, it’s kind of nuts how quickly the optimism has been extinguished

That's a quick change around from after the OT game where the players seemed to have free reign to talk us up as title contenders.
He has obviously reviewed the mindset and thinks some players are too confident not focused enough or something worse.

All comes down to us vs. ManU as I have no doubt that City, Liverpool and Chelsea are locks for top 4.

I suppose on one hand he's got people talking about belief and how ruling us out in previous seasons gets into the players subconscious and could be a factor in previous drop offs. and then on the other hand he's got the evidential proof (albeit from a smaller sample size) that him going the other way just a few weeks ago has seen a staggering drop in form (could just be coincidental of course).

And then on the third hand :cautious: he's got an unhealthy obsession with cows :nailbiting:

I do not believe for one second that Poch is happy about our lack of summer business. Clearly something is going on. If Trippier and Toby were fatigued, and there wasn't something else - e.g. sending some sort of message to Levy or whatever - he'd just say it. That he didn't, and instead obliquely used "technical reasons", means something is up.

I don't think leaving those 2 particular players out equates to him not being happy at the summer transfer window at all.

We tried resting players in the champions league two years ago and it turned out badly.

Those who are slating Trippier for his defending would do well to remember who is going to play in his place.

I have to admit I’m finding some of Poch’s decisions baffling at the moment.

We play against one of the best teams, renowned for a top class and very quick front 3 and we decide to play with a system leaving huge gaps and our quickest defender on the bench.

Then we travel to the San Siro leaving one of our most experienced defenders at home.

Just feel like something is up, just feels wrong right now. even though we won 3 on the spin the only *good* performance was the second half at United.

Is one really worse than the other? I mean the difference is not much either way and probably comes down to preference. The second goal was completely Trippiers fault.

Not to mention just simply watching everything fall apart at Watford, when you could see we were up against it and needed to change something. From the 2 matches against Watford and Liverpool, Poch's decisions (to not make changes when under pressure against Watford and to have the full backs so high up against Liverpool amongst other things) have annoyed me more than the teams performance.

Maybe trip and Toby have gone to poch and told him they're fucked and need a full weeks rest. Take note, Harry.

Tripp's was caught out badly for their 2nd goal & Toby didn't cover himself in glory either, so maybe he's giving them a wake-up call, to see if it improves their performances.

Well that’s a matter for opinion. Agree Trippier got done for the second goal at the weekend, and he has some defensive weaknesses, but I trust him more than Aurier.

Besides, even if they are as bad as each other defensively, Trippier is far better going forward and I think has been one of our better performers so far this season.

Tomorrow is a very important game. Lose and we will probably be facing 0 points from the opening two matches. I don’t think it’s the right tone for just chucking players in and experimenting.

Poch: "Experience is like a cow who sees a train every day for ten years crossing in front, and if you ask the cow when the train is coming she's not going to answer."

Spot on gaffer

Sounds like a Polish proverb.
