Why are we whining about Trippier and Alderweireld?

Aurier was always going to rotate in for a mid-week match, and Sanchez deserves to play. This looks like much ado about nothing.

Imagine that either Aurier or Sanchez/Jan suffer a last minute set back like Lamela did against united? Suddenly we've got no one to replace them.

We can talk all day about how Trips and Toby haven't had great games lately (not many have) , but you just don't leave those 2 players at home in a CL opener away.
You need experienced players in CL even if it means on the bench. Not having either to calm upon is suicidal if you get an injury in either position... It's just plain daft!!

Serge is a liability, especially in high pressure games. Lose him to a red and it's game over. Play him in a strategic game against Italians who will exploit his weakness and its game over.
Anyone can see the madness in this squad apart from Poch it seems.

Dear oh dear, we will need lady luck now!

Has Pochettino left Alderweireld out so he doesn’t get cup tied for the Champions League ahead of a January sale?

I do not believe for one second that Poch is happy about our lack of summer business. Clearly something is going on. If Trippier and Toby were fatigued, and there wasn't something else - e.g. sending some sort of message to Levy or whatever - he'd just say it. That he didn't, and instead obliquely used "technical reasons", means something is up.

He mentioned how Liverpool a team who were fighting for the title, made it to the CL title did some big spending in the Transfer Window to improve their chances to win/compete this season.

That was proof enough of his feelings on our shortcomings in the window passed. We did nothing how can we be expected to compete was my interpretation.

Would be shocked if this isn't the line up

Vorm
Aurier Sanchez Vertonghen Davies
Dier Dembele
Lamela Eriksen Lucas
Kane

Subs: gazza KWP rose winks wanyama son llorente

Only difference might be wanyama for Dembele

If Wanyama is fit, I do not want to see Dier again in midfield. Play him in a back 3 or not at all.

Agreed, but to be fair until now we've never had players to rotate with Eriksen, Dele, Dier for the most part, and Vertonghen until now. We have at least 1 player on the bench most of the time that could be rotated with that group. Still don't really have anyone for Kane or Lloris but I suppose with Kane we can play without a true forward and succeed.
Disagree. Eriksen and Dele are two of five options of high quality in that area alongside Son, Lamela and Moura. Pritchard could have been developed, he’s clearly premier league quality and would be a better choice than Sissoko or Nkoudou. For Dier, we’ve had Wanyama for the past 2 seasons, this is his third. For Vertonghen, Wimmer had a great first season stepping in and looked like the long term replacement, how he fell so far off the cliff nobody knows but it’s not beyond the realms of imagination that had he been given more opportunity in the following season, or even better coaching (pure conjecture I know) he’d have found that form again. As for Kane, there will never be an equal replacement, but having signed Llorente off the back of scoring 15 league goals for a shit team (who got relegated the following season without him), he should have given Llorente ten times more minutes when Kane was fatigued or off form.

I’m not saying we have a perfect squad, but we have a fair bit of depth and quality in pretty much every area, but when that depth is used to soaringly it will always fail to reach its potential. The following side, if played regularly as a first choice side, would finish 6th in the premier league (I’ve based it on last season’s first choice which finished 3rd):

Gazzaniga
Aurier Alderweireld Foyth Rose
Wanyama Winks
Sissoko Lamela Moura
Llorente

Toby has just had his first child, then straight off on international duty. If he and Trips aren't going to play, we don't need to take everyone, some can stay at home. No big deal.

Well, it really does seem like Chelsea, Liverpool and City are top 3. One of them would have to fuck up enormously as they are clearly the 3 best and most balanced squads at this point in time.

We are noticeably worse, leggy and have almost gone back to square one rather than building at all. Which means we’re up against Utd, Arsenal and whoever is this season’s dark horse for 4th. We need to start playing well quickly.

We’re now needing to beat Inter away to stop a full blown crisis, it’s kind of nuts how quickly the optimism has been extinguished

Funny thing is after winning our 1st 3 I still didn’t feel as optimistic as I have the previous 3 seasons. I’ve been happy with the results but performance wise, it’s been pretty bland.

All I can think of at the moment with the majority of the squad playing so late into the WC is they are either slowly building up their fitness levels again, or they are worn out. Yes if we had made some signings to help rotation it might of helped, but at the moment the signs are showing we would of needed 5-6 signings to help this period, the problem being afterwards once everybody was up to speed.

Has Pochettino left Alderweireld out so he doesn’t get cup tied for the Champions League ahead of a January sale?

Isn't there a new rule which means they don't get cup tied anymore? So they can play in the knock out stages for another club,

All players want to play in the CL, i can't believe the players that have been left behind are happy.

If all was well Poch would have laughed it off or explained properly why they were left behind, not all the ''technical reasons'' rubbish .

The way Poch explained it he wanted everyone to know there was a problem.
