Swings and roundabouts, the same process has seen us miss out on PEA and Eden Hazard, to name just two superstars who instantly come to mind. Probably most relevantly in the summer of 2016 our wage cap saw us buy Sissoko instead of Mane, a decision that may well have cost us the title.

Actually, I understand Spurs showed interest in Eden Hazard while he was still within Spurs' budget. The same regarding Luis Suarez. But Spurs hesitated on both and by the time they were ready to strike they were both gone.

I'd like to see us go for Barkley in January and then go for Pulisic, Goretzka and Sessegnon next summer. Arguably another striker option as well unless one of the youngsters is looking ready.
Neither Pulisic nor Goretzka are realistic targets for Spurs. You might be able to pull that off on Football Manager though.

Barkley

Morgan Schneiderlin - Sounds as if things aren't going as well for him at Everton, might be a deal to be made for him. With Mousa struggling with injuries and Wanyama possibly being out for the season, I think he'd be a solid acquisition in January. Not to mention with the WC coming up, his best bet at making the French team would be playing for Poch. He'd be extra motivated and we have Lloris and Sissoko to keep him focused.

since we're buying all the players that happened to cross paths with Poch at some point in their careers the likes of Shaw and Schneiderlin, we might as well add the likes of Lovren and Rickie Lambert to the list. I hear that both of them need a new club nowadays and they both played well under Poch.:facepalm:

Come on lads all this ex-Southampton Shaw business is nuasating enough, we can and should do better. Stop living in the past.

I wouldnt mind that at all. Work with poch again who got him playing at his best for saints. Would much prefer a calm and steady passer than sissoko losing the ball all game long.

Pulisic may well be very expensive in both wages and fee but I think his transfer may well be offset with commercial revenue. To a US based firm, with the NFL and the national sides blue eyed boy, sponsoring our stadium seems very appealing?

Wages I would imagine. Two of the most sought after young players in Europe, meaning big clubs will be competing to offer the best contract.
Pulisic seems to be a real option if ITK is to be believed. I don’t actually think wages for Leon would be that difficult but I do agree there would be other destinations he would be more favourable to, Barca seemingly one of them. I don’t think we have been linked to him once and as he will be available for free so I imagine the worlds elite will be wanting him. Who we could be looking at is Rabiot, I know that sounds crazy because of who he playes for, but he has tuned down several lucrative offers from PSG and his current contract runs out in 2019. It seems he may be wanting a change of scenery. Obviously there is still a lot of time and no doubt he will eventually extend... but IF he doesn’t and is making noises about moving then I would love to at least try as it may not all be about the money with him and he would be excellent for our system.

I don't think we would be showing an interest if we didn't think we could afford their wages.

I honestly feel like our fans sometimes still have such a small club mentality. We've had info that tells us there isn't a player out there that we can't afford if we wanted to. Poch himself explained recently that Levy is about to offer new contracts to all our top players to ensure that they are on the competitive wages. The stadium is coming and the revenue attached to that, along with our increased revenue from qualifying for knockout stages of CL.

I mean come on, we're not talking about trying to buy Messi or Ronaldo here.

It's not what we can offer mate its what other clubs with deeper pockets who are interested could counter offer and blow us out the water, that doesn't mean we shouldn't try but there is always the threat of that happening which is why I presume people air of the side of caution when it comes to transfers.

I like Zaha he has greatly improved, pace power trickery but if I where being critical he doesn't score enough goals.

We need to be looking at players that have the potential to score goals assist as well with the attributes mentioned above, its why I think Barkley might be a better.

I still would like to see more of N'koudou he has certain qualities we could benefit from in certain games.

I like him too but apparently he's on £120K a week.

At some point we're gonna have to pay the wages, to step forward. I honestly believe once Levy gets the key to the new stadium that sort of wage won't be a problem.

We've already got one of those in Winks who i believe can be much better.

Do we really need another CM in addition to Barkley. Dembele, Wanyama, Winks, Sissoko, Dier, Onomah.....

I get that, obviously, but my personal view is that is a bit of a defeatist attitude. It's all ifs and buts as far as I can see and I would maintain that we're not talking about elite level players here. If we were trying to sign Griezmann or Dybala then I can totally understand the view that we're not on the level of signing those players yet but Pulisic and Goretzka? Nah, I feel that we can compete.

Either way, it should never stop us from trying. Davinson Sanchez is the perfect example of player that was being watched by/on the radar of, all the top clubs in europe. I mean Chelsea were reportedly trying to steal him off of us but whatever they did in the end didn't matter - and we know they can offer far higher wages than us. We got the deal done and he's proving to be a brilliant signing.

Realistic not defeatist and I'm probably one of the most optimistic members on the forum, for the reasons already stated it's not about their immediate wage, we can probably offer something Pulisic and Goretzka would be happy with after all...it's the threat of other clubs coming in and stealing them with a better offer, there's nothing defeatist about that, it's a very real situation and it's happened to us numerous times before. For every Davison Sanchez deal there's a Willian, Hazard, Batsuyai, Mane etc..
