There's very little quality journalism about football, essentially because football, though thrilling and absorbing itself, is usually a fairly banal subject when expressed in words.

And given that most journalists don't have access to the type of information we'd like to read about, eg. what Danial Levy is thinking and how much he's prepared to spend on an attacking midfielder, I can't see the point in doling out more cash just to read some geezer writing the sort of half-informed (I'm being generous here) thing I can read elsewhere on the net for free.

They sound like a nice company ?

The Athletic is the brainchild of Mather and Adam Hansmann, two American former executives at Silicon Valley subscription-based fitness company Strava. Mather told the New York Times: “We will wait every local paper out and let them continuously bleed until we are the last ones standing. We will suck them dry of their best talent at every moment. We will make business extremely difficult for them.”

I think journalists joining them should be having a good think about it.

Interesting. I spend more time on the internet than ever but the quality of info is so poor.

This could be what I have been looking for.

My understanding is the Athletic is running in the US and this is an expansion into the UK market.

Do any of our American posters know about the quality of their other coverage?
I’ve had it for a couple years now and love it. Jack Pitt Brooks has a story about NDombele’s journey to get to Spurs on there today. It was good.

They’re journalists have already started sending out clickbait transfer tweets. Exactly the kind of thing they said they would do. They’ll be no different to any other news outlet by this time next year when they realise the only way to make money in this country via online journalism is advertising and betting adverts.

They don’t serve ads so it’s not clickbait. They have also raised $90 million to date with their last funding round of $20 raised in May so they won’t be changing the subscription model any time soon.

There is an article from a couple of weeks ago at inews.co.uk - written by Ian Burrel who is a real football fan and a mate. Might be of interest

If not clickbait in the most precise terms, then it's subscription bait in the extreme

The App Store has the price as £4.99 a month but if you search for subscription prices on line you’ll find a special offer of £2.99 a month. Sounds a bargain. But once you opt for the £2.99 offer and start to sign up it’s suggested that you download the App to make best use of the service and Lo and behold the price is back to £4.99 a month.

Has anybody managed to sign up for the £2.99 offer? How?

I signed up to the £0.00 deal by just reading the journalism of the journalists who have been promoted/employed to replace the athletic staff.

I feel about them as I've felt about Dimi in the past.

Already had an account for the NHL and NFL coverage as it’s much better than the standard stuff. Hope the football coverage is similar quality instead of 90% coverage of United and Liverpool with every other team going for the other 10% of the scraps like it is here with all the other major publications.

The internet and social media killed sports journalism, its like what Kate Burley did to news reporting.

Has anyone seen the thread on The Athletic website taking a massive load of the leading UK footie writers and they’ll stick them behind a paywall?

They’ve got David Ornstein, Daniel Taylor, Oliver Kay, and loads of others.

Gonna be quite the shake up of football reporting. I’ll be interested to see what their subscription package is like.

Surprised Gab Marcotti isn’t on it. Especially with his links to USA.

Signed up and only read a few stories but I am extremely impressed.

I remember a few years ago Fanatix tried a stats based site. Problem was they weren’t journalists and couldn’t interview.

The Athletic provides high quality journalism and quotes people in full rather than twisting their words.

Still impressed by the quality of the reporting.

A good piece on the changing tax laws in Italy opening up for players to go there.

High earners only pay tax on 50% of earnings. So if Ramsey is getting £400k a week then £200k is tax free.

Could see Italy bringing in higher quality players than they have been recently.

The Matt Jansen piece was a fantastic read. I was 13 when he scored in the League Cup final against us in 2002 but I had absolutely no idea what he'd been through after missing out on the World Cup squad that summer.

Yeah I was readign this somewhere else, just further encourage ment for players to run their contracts down and go to Italy on a free.
