Couldn't see a thread. Kicked off today. Russia played some decent stuff but they were up against New Zealand's shit kickers.

I was expecting more from New Zealand's front two, especially Rojas. To not score vs Akinfeev is criminal. But they had zero build up play and just relied on the old 'up and under' all game. Dreadful.

Russia looked decent, but as you said, they weren't up against much. Will be interesting to see how they fair against the other teams in the group. Golovin looked quite lively!

The Mexico/Portugal game was a damn good game of football. Mexico always (for as long as I can remember) try to play a good brand of football, but rarely seem to have the uber players that Argentina and Brazil produce. Not sure why.

I don't really get why this tournament isn't more highly regarded (maybe because England are never in it ?) but it's pretty decent concept. Winners of all the world federations battling out in the future World Cup venues, with teams seemingly a little less cautious than they are at the WC etc.

Just started watching the Chile/Cameroon game. Loved that bit of anthem singing by Vidal and the rest of the team and crowd. Stirring. Love Vidal, a marvellous footballer, that rare combination of talent, dynamism and aggression, the perfect footballing storm bundle.

The Portugal boss needs to fade out the older players fast, there's no reason to still be a defensive team when they finally have options in many positions for a change.

Nani starting upfront ahead of Silva is just silly.

127 million people, 1/2 kicking a ball before they can walk - I agree they should be better. In the past its been indiscipline in the midfield that has been their weakness.

What the hell is this ludicrous tournament? Little more than a FIFA-Blatter vanity project it seems to me. The tip-off is in the name - the competition's organising principle is the administrative regions of FIFA. Oh, the romance!

There's too much damn football, and for FIFA to be hastening the advent of a 50-week a year game is just bullshit.

It's held for two reasons, and one of them is to make sure the host nation gets a "trial tournament" before the World Cup to ensure that everything's in order/on schedule.

The other reason is pure FIFA vanity project.

Yeah, I've heard that "trial tournament" thing before, but it's nonsense - hosts got on just fine without trial tournaments for decades, and hosts still don't need trials for Euro's or ACN's. And countries like Russia, or South Africa or France or the US hold major sporting events all the time, and don't need trials. Has there been a WC that was majorly screwed up organisationally in recent years? I don't remember one. I don't buy it for a moment wrt Con Cup.

I think it's a great idea. What's not to like. The champions of all the federations duking it out without taking it way too seriously. Saving me from the insanity of either no football or just being able to watch Aidy Fucking Boothroyd teach talented footballers how to park a bus.

Last 20 minutes of this game has been utter shite. Not sure why Germany have not made any subs to freshen it up..
