Ashwin: "It wasn't planned or anything like that. It's there within the rules of the game. I don't understand where the spirit of the game comes in."

So for me, the 'backing up too far' argument doesn't hold much weight. Ashwin signed the IPL pledge to play to the spirit of the game and now is denying he even knows what that is. IMO he's dropped himself in the shit and his attempts to deny what he did are embarrassing.

Which is a load of codswallop from Ashwin. He did the exact same thing against Sri Lanka in 2012 and his captain Sehwag intervened to withdraw the run-out appeal due to the spirit of the game.

Don't agree with this at all. He wasn't backing up too far and pretty much most of the respected figures in the game don't like what they saw. Without turning this into a back and forth about the spirit of the game, the rules etc etc, this from the BBC slums it up for me.

The laws state that "if the non-striker is out of his/her ground from the moment the ball comes into play to the instant when the bowler would normally have been expected to release the ball, the bowler is permitted to attempt to run him/her out".

Replays showed Buttler was in his ground when Ashwin's foot landed at the crease but then left it before the bowler removed the bails.

And here's a few punditry onions:

England selector and former batsman James Taylor: "Buttler was still in his crease when Ashwin was in his delivery stride! He wasn't trying to gain an advantage! He was literally walking in with the bowler."

Shane Warne: "So disappointed in Ravi Ashwin as a captain and as a person," Warne said. "All captains sign the IPL wall and agree to play in the spirit of the game.

Ashwin: "It wasn't planned or anything like that. It's there within the rules of the game. I don't understand where the spirit of the game comes in."

A new county season and it seems Middlesex is sticking with its bowl first and avoid batting last approach to cricket. :shifty:

I see Haseeb Hameed made an unbeaten 200 for Lancashire. The match wasn't against top quality opposition and didn't have first class status but it's a start for the young man. I wish him well, I'd love to see him rack up a few runs and get back into England contention.

Joe Clarke with a ton and an unbeaten 97 for Notts against Yorkshire.
Seems to be starting to fulfil his immense promise, but he's yet another wicketkeeper. We could end up with 4 in the test team if we are not careful.

Haseeb Hamid has got a half century. he also had a decent warm up game a couple of weeks ago. positive sign that he might be regaining his technique/confidence. could be very timely if it continues.

117 for Hameed

Good man! I don't think England should necessarily fast track him into the Ashes, though.

Makes you wonder what has happened to him in the last 2 or 3 years when he has been in the wilderness, and looked like he could disappear altogether. Maybe too much too quickly at a young age, and the pressure of expectation.
Hope he can put it behind him and push on now because we sure need someone in the top order who knows how to build an innings.

from what i gather, his injury (thumb i think) was severe. to the point where he had to totally change his grip on the bat, pretty much having to change technique. seems like he may have finally clicked again.

A few of you will be happy to hear Hameed played well again with a well-deserved ton. Shame he couldn't have waited a week to find his batting mojo :shifty: While the Aussies will be pleased to see Glenn Maxwell was destructive with the ball.

Saw some highlights from Hameed's knock and he's a totally different player, actually going out there and being aggressively, even went to his century with a 6!

Hope he has a good season, probably one too early for him as he'll need to recover mentally from averaging 8.9 or whatever it was last year. I'd rather watch someone like him get into line than lead in his boots Jennings.

Madness that Jordan and Archer aren’t in the preliminary World Cup squad

Is there a good ODI world cup dream team thing?

I used to pick Stephen Fleming as my main batsman - very hit and miss but one of my fave cricketers. Trescothick was another... oh and was it Knight? Couldnt go too wrong with Vettori and Chris Cairns... yep i was a fan of New Zealand.

Japes! James Faulkner posted this on Twitter

For some reason he didn't consider that some people might not get the joke and actually think that he was coming out. He's since clarified it with another tweet, but mate, a couple of the comments to both this and the second tweet had chuckling.
