It starts at the top. By the time it gets onto the field of play it's too late. Until the World Cup next year and probably the end of the summer next year this is what we can look forward too.

Colours nailed Bayliss's mast until that time.

You want this sport to move forward and continue to bring in crowds and the youth - perhaps the jazzers need to take a look at them selves.

When you bring a white ball specialist back into the fold makes you wonder why anyone at county level would bother.

There's some talented players here, but there's too many in 20/20 mode when it comes to batting. Silly shots, playing at everything, not defending properly.

20/20 has its positives but I don't think it helps the test game. Might explain why England look so bloody useless.

It’s really winding me up how passive the commentators are being about the way England are “performing”

England, since Joe Root took over as captain, have been nothing short of a disgrace. I’ve never seen a team like this that are so fragile mentally. They seem to think that the way to get in is scoring quick runs, instead they get themselves out in stupid, stupid ways.

Losing by an innings to Pakistan at the home of cricket is utterly disgusting and each and every player needs to be scolded for it.

Joe Root would not be my Captain after this series if I was the coach. He’s the one with the biggest mentality issue in the whole squad.

India are going to be obliterate us.

England has been desperately poor in all aspects of the game and seem to have approached the Test totally unprepared and with an air of misguided complacency.

But fair play to Pakistan - they have been absolutely excellent, responding to the conditions and playing proper Test Match cricket. They're well drilled, thoroughly organised and have outplayed us on our own turf.

Mind you, it didn't help choosing to bat first on Thursday morning - I was at Lords & no one around me could understand why we didn't bowl in traditional English conditions: warm, heavy, humid, overcast conditions with a greenish wicket - quite baffling.

I'm at Edgbaston in August for the India Test, maybe I should swap my day 3 ticket for day 2 - we're likely to get obliterated if we continue to perform like this.

I don’t disagree with your post, but this is what we were like 20 years ago. Since not long after the millennium we improved and went on to have a very, very good test team and I think a lot of younger people only remember us that way.

We’re on a very rapid decline for lots of reasons and it’s a big shame.

Worryingly it could get worse before it gets better with Anderson and Broad not having long left before retirement.

Taken from bbc txt, quite clearly our lot haven’t been fed or watered for two years:

Zak in Burnley: Win-win situation for me being a British born Pakistani, although I do hope it goes down to the final session of day 5! I think it's worth a mention that most of the Pakistan team will be fasting which means no food or drink until sunset which makes their effort over the last few days extra special.
