I'm trying to think of batsmen who are knocking on the door. Who was our opener who showed promise before breaking his finger? Asian name I think.

This team hasn't been very good, especially at the batting side of things, for six or seven years now. Just look at the stats, runs put on the board first innings, lack of 400 scores, etc. We've been lucky that Test Cricket as a whole has been at a mediocre level over that timeframe and so kept us at least reasonably competitive.

All the arguments I have made many times before, they've been said already this morning, but once again:

I know some disagree but they need even more separation of the Red and White ball cricket. Players, coaches, everything, with the guy in the Strauss role overseeing everything and making the decisions such as when the multi-format players get rested, for example.

Then they need to sort the schedule, for the benefit of the red ball game. Make it harder for 80mph trundlers to cause havoc early season, so bowlers have to work and develop better skills. And hopefully helps the spinners.

And linked to this, there just needs to be a thorough evaluation of what type of player is being produced. There is seemingly (given the number of chances that have been offered to players) a real lack of quality coming through with the batsmen, both in terms of number of runs they can get and their toughness/grit and ability to bat time. I don't really see a high quality of bowlers either. Some get close in certain facets, but there is no one who is getting opportunities demonstrating outstanding control, or real hostility, or even any viable left arm seamer to offer a point of difference. And lets not get started on the spin options.....

And off the pitch there needs to be a shake-up in personnel. Some are far too comfy, and allowing repeated mistakes and mediocrity. No wonder fans are starting to get angry, because nothing is demonstrably going in and even looking like being addressed.

Do we have anything hiding away you know of? I'm trying to find a county cricket thread that has a batting/bowling ave attached. No luck so far.

I would drop Stoneman and wood for woakes and dare I say it Vince.
I look at Stoneman, Malan and I just don’t think they have the required talent to make it. Vince certainly has the talent I think we need to back him long term and he will be a good batsman for us

If I were the ECB I'd split the Test and one-day coaching and then throw money at Sussex to let Jason Gillespie take over the Test team.
Nooooooo.....you can't have him! I want him involved in the Aussie set up, and besides, as a South Aussie, he's one of our own!

Haseeb Hameed. Can't buy a run this season. Dropped by Lancashire.
Dropped and making an absolute shitload of runs again for the 2nd XI. OK they aren't "proper" runs but he's on the right road to a return to 1st class cricket. I think he gets a recall as soon as he strings a couple of scores together.

The way we're going 7 and 3 should put him in the frame.

"Keaton has found good form in county cricket this season, including three centuries in his past seven innings"

Really Ed Smith? Really?

Congratulations of already making yourself and the selection committee look like the fucking jazzers you already are.

They should have stripped the team top to bottom and started build (test wise) for what is to come in the future. Instead band aids and lipstick on a pig that is lame and needed to be put out of its fucking misery.

What would your squad be for the second Test?

If, as you suggested, they stripped it out from top to bottom and built for the future.
It would be something like this -

Cook - Jennings is on standby even though it's happened now.
Gubbins - played well on the Lions tour and has continued form with the bat early doors this season.
Root - He remains captain because the only other person you might think of is Stokes? (seriously the captain issue stumps me)
Livingstone - Should have started that last test in NZ with all the furore around Vince.
Bairstow - People might argue Foakes but nah.
Stokes - Yep.
Moeen Ali - not sure why he has been treated in such a way but he offers enough with bat in ball with a good supporting cast.
Sam Curran - Takes wickets.
Leach - should have gotten a call up long before this but ECB (also I think a bowling action change)
Woakes - Bowling is problematic thought before he picked up that injury his pace, line and length were all set.
Anderson - How do you replace him? The young bowled at Yorkshire? ...

That's how I would have done it bar all. I think they treated young Duckett like shit and he was as exciting a prospect wielding a bat as there was in the country about a season ago ... Hameed I mentioned. Bess like Crane are going to need time as spinners, but they both deserve looks. It's the batting in the middle order and the front line bowlers that concern me the most.

Is there anything in the rules about 'Belly before wicket'? If not then we might as well recall Gooch, Gatting, Smith and Russell. Gatt would be especially useful at blocking. As Tufnell said 'he looks like Henry the VIII'

Crikey we're shite. I know Broad's been a great bowler for us but I can't help but think 'dickhead' every time I see him play.

Shifting the odd player in and out of the Test team is merely papering over the huge cracks in our 5 day game.

What English cricket needs is to employ someone who actually believes in the format enough to stand up and fight for it and to demand it is prioritised.

England are now on their 12th opening partner for Alastair Cook since Andrew Strauss retired. And they're on their 12th spinner since Graeme Swann retired. It is increasingly hard to ignore the conclusion that the system - the entire English system - just isn't working when it comes to red-ball cricket.

6 of them are in the current squad with Leach injured, but I think that team is actually the way it's going.

Moeen just lost form but he did well in the IPL and will have some confidence back so it won't be long before he's in there.

Curran, Sam is a leftie which I think gives him the nod over Curran, Tom, who was drafted into the last Ashes Test and didn't disgrace himself.

Gubbins must be knocking hard on the door. And Livingstone ... might as well, and may do so if Malan doesn't get some runs.

Bit harsh on Buttler, maybe.

I tried to be as realistic as possible. Maybe it is harsh on Buttler but I thought there have been some players who have put the hard yards in the Championship and it, only my opinion, devalues the time and effort they have put in to see Buttler walk straight back into a side to play exclusively as a batsman - at 7 ...

I'm a little worried for the longer format of the game looking at the team at the moment but there are some fine players under the age of 21 in this country. It's only a matter of time I hope. Some of the current players are long in the tooth or really not upto the standard of Test match cricket ...
