Well that's all the momentum for India going into this 4th innings.

Can the bowlers get Root out of this mess, or will it be another humiliation ? I'm going for the latter..

Totally brainless cricket by England this morning, those 2 wickets were pure gimme's...

Is it just me or does kohli get ridiculous luck?
He is a great player no doubt but he has played and missed a lot this series and rarely nicks it and that review that just went his way was a horrendous mistake by the 3rd umpire

He was certainly lucky with that review, and England certainly shouldn't have lost it on the basis of a very dodgy 3rd umpire decision.

Now they have none left, and that could be very telling.

Fuck sky man. Not only do I have to listen to Alan Smith droning on about Spurs but then the fuckers spoil the cricket result.

Do they not think that people watching the football might have recorded the cricket to watch?

Arsehats

You could always watch your recording of Thiem beating Anderson in the tennis instead.

Edit: Oops.

Just tops off the day, had Anderson in a sweepstake. was gonna lay him later on in the tournament

Coupled with an acca in which Spurs were the last leg a draw would've won me £200 so put a hedge bet on us... The rest is biology.

Time to experiment a little for the final test and bring Pope back for a start and Bess. Maybe give Burns a go as an opener.
Really impressed with Curran - he bats like a 5/6 and will definitely make a test 100 one day, and probably many more. His potential is frightening.

Cook has announced his retirement from international cricket at the end of this series.

Not surprised, and he deserves his last game. But who will open in the match after that, I wonder?

The right decision, as I have said a couple of times recently this conversation about whether he still had the desire to play needed to be had. Glad he himself has made the call.

Whilst he's set a lot of benchmarks and done some terrific things, he has started to take a little shine off his legacy/record. To finish with an average below 45, even taking into account being an opener in England, is a bit sad considering it was over 50 at one point.

Fuck knows who opens now, Burns must be next in line but he's surely already replacing Jennings... So most probably two new openers pitched in.

Agree that it's good Cook retired before he tarnished his reputation. I think he realised that himself, he's a smart guy. That and the fact his batting style relies very much on concentration and bloody mindedness rather than shot-making. If he loses the mental edge then that's half his game taken away.

I don't follow the county game like I once did so have no idea about players coming through, but this leaves us in a bit of a pickle, seeing as we were struggling to get one opener who is capable of seeing off the new ball. Now we have to find two!

Alistair Cook has always conducted himself with class, and agree its a shame that his average has been diluted in recent years, as an average of 50+ would put him in the company of the all time greats where he belongs.
He's still the highest scoring opening batsmen of all time which I did not realise until today, and that is some accolade, as its been against the best fresh bowlers with the new ball.

I think more knowledgeable followers of the game would take into account his batting position as well as his average and number of runs scored. He IS one of the greats, and it'll be a while until another English batsman pushes him down a place.

I'm pretty sure one of the Aussies described Cook as a champion during our trip Down Under during last winter. Aussies don't throw compliments like that around too often, especially not about us Poms. Although it's been disappointing to see his Test average fall just below 45 over the last few years, we shouldn't get obsessed with the Hall of Stats stuff. If he'd had one or two opening partners of similar quality in the post-Strauss era, he wouldn't have had to carry the batting so often, and his own stats would be even better.

Very good point. (y)

Bald stats miss a lot.

Seems like a shame but always enjoyed him batting and I'm not a cricket purist etc but enjoy watching international cricket.

Also he has a magnificent jaw - i mean that is an exceptional jaw he has.

Same batsmen retained for the Oval, which is quite unbelievable, with the series in the bag and an opportunity to experiment. Hopefully Pope gets another chance though, and doesn't get treated like some of the others down the years, cast aside after only two tests.

I haven't followed cricket for a while but I'm surprised to see Cook calling it a day, he's still a young man. I was shocked to see he has more runs than Lara and Chanderpaul also, that's some feat.
