There is only one side that would suffer in this, it would be us. Unless there is another suitor for Toby.

Why? We would find another buyer, maybe for slightly less money but it would send out a message
1: players don’t dictate to us
2: we won’t be push about by the so called “bigger clubs”

Toby has to agree to the contract this "other buyer" offers, he has to want to join them, etc ..

Can understand why people are feeling underwhelmed at strengthening utd. My biggest concern is lack of strong links in cm. If dembele is off we have a bigger whole to fill than Toby going.

This i understand but dembele has had injury issues for a number of years and cant handle much more, certainly of the prem. That coupled with talk of poch adapting the way we play maybe we are looking at quicker ball movement in midfield and less of the dembele style beat a man and dribble into the danger areas. If thats the case, much as i love dembele (just a quality classy one of a kind player!) .... again see what transpires

Where is this other buyer?

Seriously Would 50m plus few add ons ever get Martial in today’s market?
Saying man Utd being differcult, but how differcult are we actually making the decision for them?

Players do dictate now, and bigger clubs still can push us around.

The good news is that Poch seems to focus on finding players who want to be here. Squad unity is very important to him. And, there are only a few bigger clubs in the world. If we want to sell at over-inflated fees, we need those clubs looking to buy.

But, I think something that gets lost in this "woe is us when bigger teams come calling" is to look at what has happened with Poch, Kane, Sanchez and now seemingly Dele and Eriksen. We did not lose a single player that Poch wanted to keep. That is showing the strength of the club.

If martial is first choice for Pochettino we must not sell them Toby if they refuse to sell to us.

So you would rather us not selling a player that doesn’t want to be with us, and we don’t want for roughly £30 m extra than we will get if we let him stay, and also effect us buying a player with that money.

If Toby had an extra year or two left on his contract, and we wanted to keep him we would be in a lot stronger position to force Martial as part of the deal.

I really wished all members in here would read all post before responding, in case you have all missed it, Herc’s has said by the end of the window we will be happy (give or take the usual moaners, because we didn’t buy their special player).

Yeah true but the longer we play hard ball the longer either Man U or Toby breaks.
if we refuse to sell to Toby’s desired club, what options does he have?
Sulk in our reserves for a 6 months/ a year and Man U will almost certainly buy someone else

So, Man U strengthens, while we let an asset go for £40M less?

Who is the winner here?

Can't deny that there are startling similarities between this Toby fiasco and the 'things have changed' narrative this summer, and the Walker to City deal last summer.

Hope it's different but clear parallels already appearing.
I do agree with this narrative and see where it’s coming from however we all need to just calm down a little. It’s still early in the window, we have clearly already shown ambition we never have before giving Kane, Eriksen, Alli and Poch deals over and above our wage structure. We can’t instantly blow money on new players as although the new stadium leads to greater future income that income isn’t there yet. 3 years of champs league football money and TV money = stable enough to hand out big new deals. By all means positive steps being taken. Let’s see who the new signing is that is imminent according to GF and see what the building up leads to that Val has alluded to(y) thanks for all the Info Herc, love how involved you are man!

Toby going to United can be the only realistic option and people can be disappointed at it happening at the same time

They aren’t mutually exclusive, it’s a shit situation.

I don’t think ITK have factored in contract renewals, and thats where this magic £150 million has come from. Our spend will probably be much lower for incomings.

This is an important point. Maybe an overlooked one too. Walker wanted out last season, went to MP and told him and barely played again. Toby this year, the same. I have to admire MP for sticking to his guns on this. If you're not committed, you don't play and you get your move. The only question then is getting the best possible deal.

I read the posts thanks ?
I just don’t think we should sell to the highest bidder regardless.
It stinks of the walker deal last season with sancho. We wanted one of their youngster was told no and we still sold them walker anyway because with £50 we could replace him with a better rb.
How did that work out again?

Not sure about Martial specifically, but £50m + £10m x 4 annual payments (5 year deal) would get you a very good player

It would pay the fee for Gareth Bale imo, although the 3 issues in that transfer would be (i) would Madrid want rid, (ii) would Bale want to come to us and (iii) Bale's wages

But in terms of the transfer fee, I'm sure it would be enough

Why don’t some of you just cut the moaning and save it until the end of the window. I have a suspicion some/most won’t be moaning. Please cork it:X3::cautious::banghead:??
Yes but chaos of not getting everything 'we' want is part of the joy in here. At least for us observers. Still a little amazed the number of people who think we control every fate in the market.
