bit more on contracts from ali z: Dier Hugo and jan a long way down the road, Son is complicated by military service situation.

I like Grealish and am happy with our attacking mid options if we keep everyone.

We need a quality Striker, a CB and a world class CM to challenge though in my opinion
Clive sir. I honestly loved when you played for us, and was one of my faves. Just did not get the recognition you deserved for so long. I do agree with you though. I personally wish we keep Danny especially, as what I see out there can’t compare with him, much less what crazy fees they want. Toby is that ‘world class CB’ imho. Would save us packets. BUT!!! His team are absolute melons.
He himself wants to stay. Sometimes we believe too much of the hype. It is all down to what Poch thinks.

Might be waiting to see how they get on in the asia cup. If they get to semi's i believe he doesn't have to do it so we can offer longer contract.

Edit- Ninjatuna has corrected me, needs to win the asia cup.

Fairly certain he needs to win the Asian Cup in order to get a military pass. The reason the team of 2002 got a pass was by getting to the S/F of the World Cup (harder competition) and because they kicked the Italians up in the air in the Q/F(?) which gave the rest of the world something to smile at

As long as there is a sliver of hope, I will cling to it. Toby can't be replaced cheaply. I know many say we replaced him last summer, but that is not the case, IMO. Sanchez still has a lot to learn, we cannot expect him to perform as consistently as Toby at such a young age. Poch obviously wants three quality CBs, as when Sanchez was bought, we would have had no reason to believe Toby would be sold this summer.

Our defence was not as sound this season compared to last. Many reasons for that, but I believe Toby's absence was part of it.

I imagine the club will be looking at WC then the Asia Cup. Wouldnt be shocked if the club is hoping for another South Korea semi final run. Precedent shows it could waive the military requirement. And if that is announced prior to Asia Cup, perhaps we would get him back for the start of the season and we wouldnt have to be without him until October. Making it easier for a new contract and getting him back for the start of the season would be the best possible outcome for the Son situation.

Hopefully we get a deal with n korea the next few days. S korea were looking to scrap national service but then tensions rose. Hopefully some sort of peace can be sorted, not just for son.

I would be surprised if the compulsory national service was scrapped within the next five years tbh. NK are unpredictable so the south will always have their eye out for anything odd. Plus if you look at the UK as an example, national service didn't finish until the late 50s/early 60s(?). I'd imagine it'll be similar in SK so we're gonna have to go out and buy our replica SK Son 7 shirts in August and pray

Anyway this isn't really the thread for this sort of stuff so I'll leave it there

or maybe the 2 Koreas will sign a peace agreement and put an end to compulsory military service.

...don't really know what I'm on about

I NEED to add something here for the manic depressive (joke) who thought done the usual. Feed fans hope, kill it with ‘reality’.

Had FFC lost, we would of agreed deal for Sess. And I am happy that they were promoted and kept him. Already shared my views on this. We then would of lost out on Greslish, whilst we quietly was waiting for the outcome. Sess would of as a total package been that c.50m player.

Martial was the other we wanted to get done early. But we see how that is panning out. That’s the only 3 names I am going public on.

I agree 100% on sess , just dont see it .

Best LB to never be capped! Even if I do so myself.

True story, as I kid I wrote to only 2 players for autographs... sicknote and Clive Wilson. Anderton only because I saw him on the Swanage ferry in dorset and thought he'd want to know!

Agreed, Toby is that world class CB. My statement was based on the assumption him and Dembele are off. If they both go they have to be replaced with world class replacements if we are going to challenge for the title.

Happy for that DCM to be Wanyama or Dier suddenly becoming world class or Wink's proving a few right and being Modric mixed with Iniesta as long as we have someone there.

A fit Rose is good enough with Davies backup at LB and I have hopes that Aurier might locate his brain or Trippier might be a late bloomer. But there are a lot of ifs and buts there.

No idea who immediately replaces Toby. Sanchez and Jan with top class FBs is fine but need another. Maybe Foyth steps up

And CF... we desperately need backup

Attacking mid is where we are healthiest. Son, Lamela, Eriksen, Alli, Moura, Grealish would do nicely

Thanks Hercules for the fascinating update !

The only downer for me is we seem to have accepted the signings will now be towards the end of the window when we were told previously Poch wanted them done early. Either it was unrealistic to expect early signings or we weren’t serious about doing what was necessary to achieve early signings.

or just that the early signings have had hurdles put in the way making them either later, or impossible and we have to work on plan B with players that are involved at the WC making it harder to do a deal.

I hope there is a slither of doubt in Poch's mind about letting him go. You never know what effect him leaving would have on Jan especially if Moose is off too.
