Neville has been in good form since joining Everton and has the leadership qualities Harry keeps harping on about, but not where we need to spend money....Get the strikers in then worry about other areas if we shift some of the deadwood

If we offloaded Walker for Neville then I'd give up on Harry altogether and probably give up on life too Eek

Even I would have to go along with that.

I will let your noble sacrifice speak for us all, however:wink:

Then berate them for costing so much when they have one bad game? And there we have full circle.

He's probably too much like Dawson to be really effective for us, but whoever gets Matt Mills for 3M (probably Wolves, looks like) is getting a real bargain, he looked excellent for Reading this year.

Matt, these good folk have answered most of what I would say in reply.

Let me just add - almost most all teams have a 'honeymoon effect' when they have a new manager - IMHO their true level was reflected when we spanked them at Anfield (something I was predicting would happen all season, BTW).

Those argue that they will be massively resurgent continuously cite Suarez and Carroll - all that really means is that they have sold one of their two (considered) World Class players and brought in two strikers to form a partnership which will probably be reasonably effective. The rest of their squad is not that great. Strikers don't make up a team.

There is also this fixation that they have money to burn - but do they:shrug: Do you have any reason whatsoever, other than they have spent early, that they have more money to spend than us:shrug: In truth, we would have to not sign anyone and them spend more than they can afford just to catch us up, IMHO.

As it is, I believe that when the smoke has cleared our acquisitions will show us to be stronger, again, and the gap at least maintained, if not widened.

They have one player who we would immediately say is World Class - Steven Gerrard, and as stated above, he is ageing and injured, and hasn't shown he will come back from it. We may as well include Ledley and Woody, in that case. And World Class players, or close to it, we can cite Modric and VDV, probably Bale, and possibly Sandro. And in making purchases, as I said, they are at a position we were at a few years ago, buying decent young English players, whereas we are trying to add quality, so more likely to sign another World Class player.

I accept your right to a different opinion, but I just don't agree with it, and really cannot imagine them challenging for the title, or even the CL spots next year. I could be wrong.

This sounds very reminiscent of the type of argument you were putting forward when I said ManC will finish above us - not in detail but in tone. I admire your optimism, but it's not very realistic.

I don't think they will be challenging for the title, or close, but I think Liverpool will be challenging for a top 4 spot next year and I don't think there's much in it between them and us.

Some of the comments in here about liverpool being miles/years behind us are ridiculous. This is the side that though going through their worst couple of years for a decade and we were having our best for three decades and still finished one place behind us both years. The only years we have finished ahead of them in the last 20 or so.

Someone said we completely outplayed them last year. We didn't, either game. Both games were very tight. Despite us being "years ahead of them".

They now have a proven winner at the helm who clearly got them working harder and playing better as a cohesive unit.

Maybe they do sound like the comments about Citeh...and surely even you can see that we really should have finished above them.

I am sad for you that you are so pessimistic, BC. The problem, as I see it, is that youdon;t seem able to read long term patterns. If you go back about three years (no not really expecting you to) you will note that I was predicting that the Big 4 would be a thing of the past and there would be something like the old Big 5 again, or maybe 6 - and being that they would all be vying for places in the CL, some would miss out some years, but still be part of the Big 5 (or 6), which never happened with the Big 4 and the CL spots. I also predicted that we may have to qualify for one year, miss out the next, for a while, much like teams trying to establish themselves in the. I did not, of course, predict Citeh would get their oil money which has upset the apple cart. without that we would actually have pushed Liverpool out of the CL spots two years running.

What to you is an proven winner at the helm, working harder and playing as a cohesive unit, to me is the ex-Newcastle manager getting a bit of a honeymoon period (that all mangers get), but being shown in all their frailties by our lot. Please, don't merely restate your position - I understand it, i just don't agree with it.

Yeah, Liverpool have had their two worst seasons and finsihed one place below us, but this year, as far as I am concerned, they finished higher than warranted due to the honeymoon effect, whereas we should have finished considerably out of their reach (and we all know this). The gap is clear to see, and has been when we have played them in the last couple of seasons - sorry for you if you really believe we didn't outplay them at Anfield.

So, my comments that we clearly have a better squad are ridiculous - ho hum. No, wait, I actually believe that, you don't - ridiculous (hey, it'smuch easier than structured argument). as for the being years ahead ofthem, er, no, I think you (wilfully) misinterpreted, I said they are going through the process we went through (buying up young, English/british players, getting themselves into a position to meet quotas, etc., and rebuilding there pretty poor, by Liverpool standards, squad). I never indicated that thatmeant they were no threat, or that they are as far behind us as Wolves, for example. What I said, and stand by, if that we arre ahead of them, adn they may push us, but I think we will be ahead of them at the end of the season. We have a better squad than them, and I believe we will have a better squad come the start fo the season. Don't accept that - then toodle off to the bookies and out a wedge on your bindipper friends, for I sure as well will be putting a wedge on our lot.

Why is that? It is because, based on long term reading of the situation over several years, I really do believe we have a very good squad, that is on the up, adn (providing we keep our top players) we will be so mcuh better for this year's experiecne than posters like you are giving credit. Want to believe that makes me wildly optimistic - go ahead. Want to believe that is ridiculous - go ahead:grin:

I probably sit the middle of the two of you

Liverpool aren't as strong as people here suggest, even with what they have spent. However, I still think they're on par with us.

I think you need to learn the difference between pessimism and realism and then re-read what I said and then next time you respond to me try not to misrepresent what I actually said.
