Eh?

This is not the case. Injury record is clearly a huge factor. I like Sturridge for example but...

Then there's someone like Wanyama who's proven he can play to top six standard at epl tempo. Versus an eighteen year old Serbian who hasn't.

Levy seems to have a similar attitude to risk as you. He won't put 30m down on one player, who would significantly improve the first eleven, when he could buy two prospects for the same money. I say save the money we want to spend on this Marseille bloke, and put it towards buying a 30m player next summer.

I think the problem is that every signing is a risk. Even if they spend £30m on a player, there is no guarantee that he will be a success. Look at Soldado. Levy could spend big money and not improve on the first 11.

But if you look at most of the uber players in the premiership, many have been marquee signings by champions league clubs. So while it is not a guarantee of success, a significant number of them have been. If you look at chelsea, man city, man utd and arsenal over the last 10 years, most of their big players were big buys at the time. Toure, Silva, Aguero, Ozil, Sanchez, Hazard, Kompany, Tevez, Drogba.

Part of the reason our big buys weren't quite the success, as we overpaid for the second tier player to come to us.

It's not just the transfer fee though. The players you mentioned are way out of our wage bracket and we are unable to complete financially with those clubs. The question was about taking risk and for the success' you mention those clubs have also signed expensive failures (e.g. Torres). I agree that signing a next level player to improve the first 11 is what we all want and in theory the higher you spend the better the player should be, but nothing is guatanteed. Other clubs are in a different financial position to take more risk.

Of course. But there are obviously degrees of risk. The examples I gave are valid.

Although I'm not a coach so according to many haven't got a clue, I could have told you Soldado would not justify his cost in playing a lone striker role in the prem. He lacked the physicality, especially in avb s possession based style.

Its the intelligence of the choice that determines the risk, not just the price tag.

A bit overnight from Ali z talking about outgoings. Note, not all of these players will be sold. I suspect if we get good offers in for them then they might be available, although following Mason's recent words I doubt it's him (although he's had the most interest) and Fazio looks like he's off to Espanyol:

We won't buy any more before we sell we want an AM, but before Fazio, Carroll, Mason and Chadli go, well at least 2 of them incomings will be unlikely.

And in respect of Mason:

We would sell him for right offer - one of him or Caroll will go.

Interesting.

Think Carroll is a better bet personally, but I've always felt he'd be better further forward than we play him.

The thing with Mason is, while I really like the guy and while I think he actually has a lot of talent, he's too injury prone and he's in a position where we already have Bentaleb (if he stays) and Onomah coming through who I'd like to see get game time

@Setzthree

Why such an extreme reaction? If you don't agree, just say why.

I mentioned Bentaleb and Yedlin in case you missed that and just thought I was repeating the post, but I had literally just changed my signature and listed those six as players to sell and then I saw the Ali Z info above straight after.

I think at least a few people would argue Mason, Chadli and/or Carroll to stay whether on potential, merit, whatever but regardless I think the fact that we're ready to sell players that were (not entirely bad) starters only one or two seasons ago is an excellent sign of progress--the bar has been raised.

We've already had 2 very good offers for Mason (Bournemouth and West Brom), and flat rejected them.

It depends on how gullible you are. The poster speaks like he is Daniel Levy, Poch or someone closely related, with the authority in his tone.
I take them with a sack full of salt.
Filed accordingly ;)

I've said before that I've got a mutual friend with Mason. So nothing to do with the club, just one player's perspective.
We have a process where we 'verify' anyone posting ITK and unless its adhered to you shouldn't be posting that stuff on SC. I can't find any record of you having done so, so if you want to post any info etc, get in touch with @chrissivad and he'll tell you how to go about being verified. If you'd rather not, then please don't post it. Anywhere on SC.
