Mawson is the classic cheaper option levy move. So I guess we'll find out sooner rather than later if anything has changed. Seems like De Ligt/Mawson will be the benchmark.
Or it could be because we need the money elsewhere.

Do you know what. I think he is a bloody good player. Plenty to work with.
Would have been great if we still were a top 5/top 6 team hoping to finish above Arsenal. We are a team that's finished 3rd, 2nd, 3rd, and need to realise the consequential need for setting our eyes higher than summer of 2012.

Agreed. However what is the guarantee DeLigt will not be another Janssen ?

Turn it on the head. Wouldn't it be great to have yet another, better, younger Davinson? It's mindboggling that DeLight will only turn 19 this year. (Mawson is already 5 years older).

I think with deLigt we do have a pretty fair yardstick to measure him by in Davinson Sanchez, which has to give us cause for opyimism.

Personally, from what I saw of him in the Europa Cup Final I think De Ligt is a better alround player than Sanchez & I hope he's signed, but I'm not holding my breath.

I think De Ligt looks the better natural defender and obviously has leadership qualities, however it's hard to overstate the power and recovery pace of Davinson. But that's what's great, they compliment each other.

If De Ligt signed and settled well we could have one of the best pairings in the PL for over a decade! And they'll have Jan to learn from, who looks to have a few years in him still too. Probably why Herc is so keen.

Furthermore, De ligt also has the ability & the willingness to venture forward with the ball. Kind of like a bulked up Foyth if you get what I mean.

With Sanchez, De Ligt, and Foyth we'd have three of the best young CB talents in world football, and we'd still have Vertonghen marshaling the back line. That defense could prove to be a bit more error-prone than the Toby/Vertonghen partnership in the short term but in time we'd be setting ourselves up to have potentially one of the best back lines in Europe.
Yep. Unless we have to sell them, in time..
On Mawson, idk about this guy but many seem to think he's shit and many think he's good? But what if Poch wants to play with 3CBs, wouldn't we need someone else also, not just De Ligt..

Jan Sanchez De Light Dier Foyth should be plenty no? Davies has played LCB for Wales in a back 3 so would say we’re more than covered.

theres a fella on SO called cagedveggie who claims we are signing mawson, says good source

If we could get him for under 30m it would be decent business. He's young enough to improve and would be competent back up. It would be pointless splurging 50m on De Light when he's unlikely to unsurp Jan/Davinson

He's having an Op & Mawson is clumsy in comparison to De Ligt. I don't think we'll pay the money it would take to get him, but at 50M it would be money well spent in my view. If nothing else he'll likely be worth double that in 5 years time.

De Ligt is the best teenage CB in the World at the moment and very likely to usurp both of them very quickly imo and Mawson was struggling to get into an England team with a group of very average CB's before his surgery.
