I would be happy to save money on the centre midfield positions if it meant we had another game changer in attack - Martial, Zaha or Bale would transform our forward potency, but I don't see a similar level talent available to us this summer at CM. Spending big on a forward and saving on midfield makes sense considering who is available this summer.

So, realistically we're looking at Gomes, Grealish, and a Martial alternative this window.

Just how good that Martial alternative is will define whether the window is a failure or a success for me. If it's Zaha or Bale, then we've done exceptionally well, if it's Shakiri, Levy out.
Completely agree. If we "get cute" with the CM position and it actually enables us to bring in someone like Martial or Bale, that's a tradeoff that I can live with (and indeed be very excited about, as I think we have the players to play 4-3-3 or 4-1-4-1 quite well). On the other hand if we set aside all of our funds for a major acquisition in the forward positions, and then whiff on all of our top targets and have to settle for second-choice options, we will have failed to improve the first XI in yet another summer window.

Let's just hope we have our ducks in a row with regard to our alternatives to Martial.

I'm happy enough with @Hercules info (thanks btw).

City just walked the league with one traditional CM in most games, Fernandinho, occasionally supplemented by Gundogan. Targets suggest a formation change away from the double pivot, in which case adding another top class attacker in the Bale/Martial mould would be a real key addition. If we start looking at Eriksen and Dele as midfield options they are already players that most clubs in Europe would love to sign...

We could sign someone like Kovacic and he wouldn't be a game-changer for us. So I like this ITK, be smart with the midfield options and go big for a player who can alter our attack significantly. The more firepower the better IMO.

Big names don’t always work out the best. I thought Soldado was a great signing couldn’t fail 20 goals for three seasons in Spain. Just never happened.

I think our midfield and defence has been pretty resilient of late.

We tend to bemoan our lack of creativity going forward and in dangerous positions in the final third in the match threads.

We have the midfield destroyers in Wanyama and Dier.

Someone like Grealish (and Winks) would be a good transitional player. Playing incisive forward passes.

I think WF and ST are where we're lacking. Someone to really hurt the opposition. We rue missed chances faaaaarrrr more than we do defensive frailties in CM and CB.

If we put to bed half the chances we miss, in most cases the game would be over by half time in which case the opposition would be completely demoralised anyway... further negating the need to spend heavy on CM's.

Is there a chance to sign Grealish, Gomes AND N’Dombele? Or signing the first two rules out a move for another CM?

If we sign Martial or Bale, there’ll be cosmic jizz monkeys everywhere. Even Gomes and Grealish will be bathed in the post-coital glow of love that enables humanity to aspire, albeit briefly, in the affairs of gods

Maybe the midfielder from Spain is Isco :cautious:

Clearly Gomes though. I think he would make a good signing and Poch will get the best out of him. I can understand why we would put big money on the final 3rd of the pitch. That's generally where we've struggled to finish teams that park the bus.

Thanks for clarifying the info Hercules. Gomes is definitely the meh signing that has been alluded to.
He has been very poor at Barca being alienated by senior players for poor performances.
Barca cant get rid quick enough, will be very dissapointed if the fee is more €20m

Will be extremely disappointing if our central midfield signings are Andre Gomes and Jack Grealish (and I'm a fan of Grealish) ...

Arguably the position that needs addressing the most this summer.

Agree BUT....Poch has a proven ability to work w/ players such as Gomes & Grealish and turn them into high performing players. I'm disappointed as I would have wanted some of the higher profile names but I (we) have to accept our way of doing business even if the promise is that we will spend money. I'd take Gomes & Grealish as options over Sissoko everyday of the week & they both offer some tactical versatility as well. Don't love it but what did we expect? Multiple center mids costing us well over 100m? I just wish there wasn't this promise and anticipation of big money signings when it may be one (albeit an extremely crucial one if it's Martial).

With the talk of being brave, challenging for the title and building up, I would be underwhelmed if we end the window with Gomes, Grealish and Martial. I would guess that between those 3 we're looking at 120-130m

I will hold judgment until the window closes and if Poch is happy by then, then that's all that matters.

Agree - now if we add de Ligt to that list of 3, then all of a sudden I think it's an incredibly productive transfer window, would you agree?

Did he clarify that?

Perhaps I am reading too much into it, I hope so because Gomes is certainly not the player I would like to see at Tottenham. I know we need the big signing ala Martial but we do need a lot more quality in the CM role alongside the gamble of Grealish.

I disagree. Right now we need to improve squad as whole. I think Poch is the right man, as proven, to take players up a level quite quickly. I think Grealish and Comes both needed nurturing managers to really step up.

As Herc pointed out, the big cash could be splashed on an attacking player.

What kind of fee will we be looking at for Gomes? Got to be around the 20m Mark surely
