Bit worrying that we've wasted months on Martial when United made it quite clear they wanted a fee we were never going to pay

I very much doubt that we have wasted months on such a longshot transfer that sounds like Toby had to go the other way to have stood any chance.

I really don’t see Zaha happening I doubt we’ll pay what they want for him as I can’t see palace selling for anything less than above market value

Simon Jordon speaking specifically about Zaha yesterday suggested that Everton would try and sign Zaha with money (circa £70m) whilst ourselves (and the gooners) would still try and low ball (£50m) but with the allure of the club. Reckons CP will hold out for the full amount and doubt we would be prepared to pay it. Zaha would prefer one of the N. London clubs. *He is probably chatting shit though.

For what it’s worth, he is one of the players that would make a real difference imo.

I quite like him but my friend who's a Palace fan can't stand him. I have a feeling that my opinion is a minority one. He's probably right that Everton are more likely to make a higher offer and he's been complimentary about Spurs in the past, saying it's a very well run club.

I really disagree, especially at 50-70 m £. I don’t see him being any better than Son, Moura and dare I say it, even Lamela. At an outlay of +50 m £, is that really what we want to spend so much on?

The only obvious positive is that he might be our best bet of replacing Kane when injured, or in need of a rest. He does however strike me as a player, that needs continuity and regular starts to perform to the best of his abilities, and I don’t see him getting that here.

Much rather pour that kind of money into other areas for me, especially CM if/when Dembele leaves.

I’m not going to get specifically into the pros and cons of Zaha in here or formations that could accommodate him. That’s been done to death in the player thread. This was about the transfer and Jordon’s (probably skewed) thoughts also. Value for money is really something that the club needs to address, and as you say, whether it should be spent elsewhere.

With Martial and now Zaha being linked, it's clear Poch wants that type of wing/forward brought in.

You're not going to get a player on the level of Zaha or Martial for much less than £70m in this current market. Just isn't going to happen.

EDIT:

Rumour is Madrid are bidding almost £200m for Hazard. I'm not saying the market isn't ridiculously inflated and overpriced, we all know it is. But you can't fight against it. In this market, Martial and Zaha are worth in the circa of £70m, it's as simple as that.

Given who we are and our lack of spending, we're going to be linked with absolutely everyone, regardless of price or position. I personally don't think we're in for Zaha at all - doesn't fit the profile of the sort of players we've gone for, and I have my doubts we're in for Martial either. We wanted that sort of player and we bought Lucas Moura and there's nothing to suggest we're going to change that sort of transfer policy at the moment.

Martial, agreed. But players like Zaha are everywhere, outside the PL, and available for a lot less. Zaha is so expensive because he's English and this country doesn't produce too many players like him.

I won't ask to you list these players in here, but I would be very surprised if you could list any as good as Zaha who would cost less than £50-60m.

If he was an England international I'd agree with you but I don't think his price tag is inflated because he spent most of his life in Croydon. I think it's inflated because he plays in a one man team.

The homegrown element only adds value when it comes to squad quotas, which probably adds on another £5m-£10m. If he played for England his marketability and interest nationally would be through the roof.

Talent wise he's currently a £40-£45m player. Chuck another £5m on for homegrown benefits and I make him worth lumping £50m on tops. Absolute tops! Because losing him will cost Palace money with them facing a larger chance of relegation his value goes up £20m.

He's a market rate £50m player at the very maximum end, even if the likes of Hazard are going for c£200m.

The £20m difference in value because of what he brings to a Palace and what he'd bring to us just doesn't make practical business sense to me and nor will it Levy.

£50m is the highest we should go, and even then that's nose bleed territory for a player that's never scored double digit goals in the prem over the course of a season

I like zaha, I’d be a little concerned that he missed quite a few games but palace were nothing without him. Of course there will be a question mark as to whether he can make the step up but from past links poch seems to like him and he thinks he could make the step up.
