A new thread for todays ITK
ali z: We have money to spend, we are closing in on deals BUT Levy maximises each deal. it is even more important he does this summer as of yesterday was told a minimum of 6 out 3 in
Similarly, there’s a lot here which to be frank is fantasy football.
We are pushing to sign players identified by the coach, who knows how we operate, and what the budget is. We won’t be competing for every top player, because we can’t afford to. We can’t compete directly with the moneybags clubs, regardless of whether you think we should.
“They got the player they needed”. Singular. There is opportunity cost. Paying over the odds for player A means we can’t bid on or afford player B and player C who we also wanted. Someone yesterday suggested we spend £30m over the odds to get a player in early. That would keep Villa (for example) afloat. That’s an insane amount of money to throw away on a few weeks training (when World Cup stars wont actually be back anyway).
As for preparation, it depends on the player. We’ve seen examples quoted of Dele and Dier hitting the ground running, but also Trippier did an interview where he said he was told he’d be integrated into the team around Christmas. Once again meaning a few weeks of summer training isn’t going to cut it. Oh , and the Dele example? Pretty sure he was training with the club whilst on loan back at MK Dons, so took that year to integrate.
We operate a frugal policy which balances the investment with success on the pitch. Without some sort of success on the pitch, the investment lessens considerably. I don’t think it’s the best policy, but it works, and changing policies is a risk (see Villa, Leeds for high profile risks falling through).
We are not a moneybags football club, so why on earth do you think we should be acting like one?
Thanks Dov - always appreciate your whoring.
ali z on GKN, Janssen, Llorente, Toby and Rose on the out list?: replace rose with another.
Dembele imoHopefully Sissoko
Can't you just take this to the thread that is to do with all the financial side of things, seriously I'm genuinely starting to miss what little ITK there is for the same arguments that have been had ad nauseam since Enic/Levy took charge.Continued from the last thread.
I'll try and keep this on track to the ITK - the fact that we're 'not a moneybags club' and the importance of maximising each deal vs. bringing players in early:
There's always the side issue that Spurs are investing a huge amount of cash in land (not stadium land) and reporting post-tax profits of £30m+. ENIC are after all a property investment company. Investment in the team and winning a title or trophy will bring a huge turn up in profits and cash (See Liverpool fanbase for reference).
The new player lodge is a good idea, and an extra revenue stream for the club. In the meantime the team was 20 points short of the title last season, despite finishing third.
Levy can maximise deals all he wants - at some point he has to appease the fans and the manager who has asked for players in early. Paying the highest prices in the league for a season ticket has to have substance. Not just craft beer and sushi. The team has to be worth the price of entry. If we had top targets come in and hit the ground running (like Davinson, Wanyama), who knows what the potential of those first 18 points up for grabs would contribute to the back end of the season - and that's the manager's point.
By the time we've caught up with everyone else in the top 6 this team may well have disbanded.
Dembele imo

Good to see the positive info from Ali Z.
The 6 out worries me however. I read a piece earlier today about the new deadlines, and they had sources saying it was making things very difficult for PL clubs (along with the World Cup).
European clubs are being very savvy with this opportunity. They are waiting until the PL window closes to buy players as it should lead to more realistic prices. They also know some PL clubs will have to ship out unwanted players after they have already brought replacements in, which is a very poor negotiating position. Makes perfect sense and does worry me as this will surely be a major issue for someone like Levy.
I think the Toby and Dembele deals are the key however, they are the big money ones. I'd imagine with the other deadwood we'll try and get deals done but might have to abandon them to focus on incomings if nothing is close.
If maximising income from the likes of Sissoko, N'Koudou, Janssen, Llorente has any bearing on the quality of our incomings I think we are bang in trouble.
I wonder if bringing grealish in might help Edwards to change his attitude. Grealish had a lot of attitude problems as a teenager but seems to have overcome them. Hopefully if grealish progresses like he should, it might get Edwards to try fulfill his potential tooali z on edwards: Last chance saloon, get head down, do as asked or go the way of other child superstar players to oblivion.
on edwards not getting near the first team this season: Then that will be the end of him at Spurs.
I think a number of people will be happy with that news.ali z on gomes (and barrios): not a name mentioned to me or Barrios as was stated in barrios thread, so hopefully not.
