So it seems Werner would be 60/70m (60/70% of our budget), very pricey, but how much will we lose out on if we miss out on champions League? Also, we wait till the summer to try and get him cheaper and we have absolutely no chance of getting him ahead of many other clubs looking for a top ST, even less chance if we drop down to Europa League.

I get that we don't want squad fillers, but Werner isn't a squad filler. If he's a player poch really wants, we either pay the premium on him or miss out completely and suffer the consequences

How did you change the % figures without any other mention, Herc’s said 70/80%

If you're going to blow most of your money on one player who has never played in the premier league before, it may as well be a young German who has 1 in 2 for club and 1 in 2.5 for country, in a position we've needed competition in for about 5 years now.

More from Ali z:

Hope am wrong but my info still is as it was, nothing close, we have targets we are not budging on them, best we can hope for is a loan and or promising kids.
Good - at least some promising younger players. I’d wondered what had happened to this strategy through all this. It has clearly paid dividends in the past.

I might be in a minority here but I think it would be crazy to spend £60-70 million (or possibly even more) on Werner (good player though he is) when our needs at CM and arguably even fullback are much greater. I would much rather see us spend that on a top quality CM. Obviously in an ideal world it would be great to do both but that's not the reality of our situation.

To dare is too dear.
You have no idea if that’s true or not. You make up narratives in your head that have no basis in reality and then search for evidence that fits your narrative, discounting evidence which is inconvenient.

Hercules has very clearly stated that buying a top player for 60/70m represents a risk because it’s a huge chunk of our budget. You say (against the evidence) that this is because Levy won’t sanction it. You assume (against the evidence) that this is despite Poch wanting to sign these players.

Perhaps the nuanced truth (which fits with the evidence) is that Poch and Levy both agree that if a large chunk of the budget is going to be spent then it should be spent on the right player. Not all players who would cost 60/70m are worth the risk. Not all of these expensive players fit the very specific personality profile that Poch requires. You have to have that Spurs profile these days.

Remember also that there’s an opportunity cost. Once you spend that money you don’t have it to spend elsewhere and so Poch and Levy have to spend judiciously. If they can’t get value for the squad and value for money then they have clearly decided not to spend at all.

Poch has said very clearly that in that case it is better to use young players from the academy who won’t mind being on the bench.

:ROFLMAO: Against what evidence? The only evidence I need for my narrative is the fact we haven't signed any top players. What is your evidence? Its you who is making things up in your head and choosing to believe it.

The club seem utterly incapable of strengthening the squad by signing top players. We will all see in the summer just how aligned Poch is with Levy won't we.

We are now almost through two transfer windows, with huge holes in our squad exasperated by an injury crisis which threatens to wreck our season, and still no signings.

is it me or are we in a bit of a stalemate here:

Poch: looking for prime targets that will take 70 - 80 % of our transfer budget
Club: won't spend 70 - 80 % of our transfer budget on one player

If Poch/the club was not so arrogant and weak regarding transfers, we could've really challenged for the league this season. It's a sickening feeling. Alderweireld and Eriksen very likely to leave in the summer, and given our current ideology on transfers, I'd say we've blown our chance of potentially winning the league for a while.

Just to confirm, people are now more upset that Werner is a no because of budget when everyone has been screaming for a central mid since the middle of last summer ...

I can't keep up.

Injuries change things. Our season (and possibly next) hangs in the balance over the the next 12 or so games where we have 2-3 of our best attackers out injured.

Plus every apparent top CM target we have seems to be courted by the elite.

A lot of us in the summer were fully on the Zaha/Martial bandwagon too. Werner slots firmly into that category. Signing him could lock down our attack for years. I have more faith in Winks becoming a CL quality CM than Moura becoming a deadly attacker. I also have more faith in our scouts finding a top CM/DM prospect than a 1 in 2 striker that can play wide also. Decent ones are emerging all the time.

At the end of the day we are all in the dark, so it's hard to argue what the best course of action is. I certainly miss the Harry days when it comes to ITK!

I think this is where we are if the latest ITK is accurate. We need probably nearer 50% of our budget to address needs elsewhere, particularly CM. So to spend the majority outright on one player (although needed) leaves us without anything much to sign someone else. Unless we can mix and match on a few targets, we're a bit stuck potentially.

Think people need to take a step back.

What if our budget is £100m. What if yes Werner costs 60/70m now but 40m come summer? We rush it through now and pay a premium just for the next couple of games. 2 weeks and we have Son, Lucas and Sissoko back.

Do we really want to throw £20-£30m away for a player to cover for the next few games? Who will probably take a couple weeks to get up to speed anyway (Poch never ever puts new signings in straight away)

We have enough of a squad to secure top 4. This season is an anomaly compared to others. We are ahead of where we wanted to be by this time so perhaps we have to take a short step back to take a massive leap forward - it’s how we’ve progressed over the last 10 years

Stop making so much sense. It destroys the current dystopian narrative that we all thrive on.

We won't be signing Werner in the summer. By then other clubs will have assessed their needs and he will most likely end up at a club willing to pay. My onion.

I agree with you in principle on this, but I feel it’s just not that simple. There could be so many other factors involved, such as the fact that paying the premium in January might give us a free run at him while clubs like Bayern wait for the price to come down in the summer. Your post assumes we would still be able to get him in the summer amid competition from other teams. I don’t think it’s just as easy as to wait until the summer to save £20m, waiting until the summer could put us out the race completely. Who knows, paying the extra cash this window for him could be the difference in getting him at all.

If he’s a top target as suggested, then it’s up to poch/levy to weigh up the risks of possibly being in a crowded market for him at a cut price in the summer. I don’t think any of us would really feel confident of signing him if that was the case, let’s be honest. If we really want him and he’s a top target we may need to bite the bullet now. If he’s not then it could be worth chancing it in the summer, although our odds for signing him would decrease quite a bit IMO.

So we are still after De Jong even though he has just agreed to sign for Barca?

In b4.....

"We tried hard to get our targets in this window but in the end they wanted crazy money. Poch doesnt want to add for the sake of it and is happy with the squad. We know our targets and will look to act early in the summer".

JJ on twitter:

Q: If you were a betting man JJ, will we see the squad bolstered by end of window ?

JJ: Up to Poch as so far he has been the blocker.

Q: Do you mean blocker as in Poch doesn't want the players offered to him or he feels he doesn't want new players in this window? (or further options!).

JJ: The latter

stubborn stubborn man, i get he wants his players. but the situation is dire. he has to see that.

Right now Poch is the problem. And I have shared that privately before it became public on here. Guy is friggin stubborn. Alright, our budget is not the best, but slightly over 100m. Though not a set budget.

I worry. If you really believe too ending it with academy graduates, to give them. Chance, I am speechless.
