We could get info on bloody Ronaldo & there'd be a moaning contingent

Not sure thats the best person to pick as he is quite easy to dislike as a human but
I have already read on more than one baffling occasion that some would not want our very own gareth back

Beyond belief really.

Well if we're recruiting players on the basis of their human qualities we could do worse than the Dalai Lama up front providing competition to Kane & Aung San Suu Kyi in the DM role as back up to Dier.

They're both lovely.

JJ unaware if Wanyama is close and thinks there's better out there

Mentioned the striker position so I think that might be the closest

Maybe Levy has a strong hand here, in that the kid has a year left and evidently fancies a move to us.

Surely their board would first appoint a new coach, who then presumably would try to talk the player round, only to be told no thanks. Soton would then hope someone else comes bidding, and Wanyama is willing to go there instead, just to fck us over. Whilst this process is in motion it's obviously in our interests to line up alternatives, but I still think the big Kenyan will offer great vfm in the circumstances.

I wonder how the EU referendum might be a factor in this window.

A brexit vote is likely to mean the pound takes a huge hit on the currency markets. The price of batman or any other player priced in euros could be getting 10-20% more expensive after June 23.

Likewise a remain vote should see the pound strengthen a little

I would imagine it would be an extra pressure to get deals done earlier

JJ is probably right about there being better out there than wanyama but as usual in these matters it will be a factor of price/availability, fits the system and prem proven.
From that list wanyama would fit the bill on all fronts unless poch and mitchell have something special on the black box of theirs that we dont know about yet.

I'm not sure there's better out there who won't demand a first team place. Dier is the no1 cm. He's a superstar

See my answer below. We don't have a single other striker here who could do the job Kane does. But I have repeatedly said I don't expect us to. Signing a player with his ready made all round skill set and attitude would be almost impossible. I have said that's one of the reasons I'd not be fussed if we didn't sign Batshuayi but would rather sign someone like Embolo who could develop into a "kane" role but in the meantime can also fulfil other remits in the attack.

I don't get why all of a sudden Mason, a player who helped us achieve a higher placed finish in the league than Wanyama did at Southampton, despite Wanyama having a superior coach, some excellent players players (including some we wanted to pay good money for) like Schniederlin, Rodriguez, Lallana, Lovren, Shaw, Clyne etc. and Mason playing next to a 20yo rookie an ever changing defence with the likes of Fazio and a a very green and in some cases lazy (Townsend/Chadli) front four, is now considered an inferior CM to Wanyama. Mason was playing really well before getting a serious injury, he then came back into a team that was already stuttering, carrying an injury after barely playing any meaningful consistent games.

Although I think Onomah would be better in a CM3, I think I'd even rather see him given more time in a CM2 than spend money on Wanyama to sit on our bench. Or Lesniak even, kids a right little busy **** and he can play a bit too.

We read glowing testimony from Schneiderlin about how Poch developed his game, we have very talented players here already who need that developing. I'd rather very good footballers like Mason or Onomah are taught how to defend a bit better because we are never going to teach Wanyama how to be a more intelligent footballer.
You give nowhere near enough respect or credit to the art and talent of defending. It's obvious in your various Walker diatribes, your opposition to the Alderweireld signing and everywhere in this post. What makes positional awareness, discipline, reading of the play and timing in the tackle any less valuable than the 'footballing' talents that you so revere? It's not a case of just teaching a player whose inclinations are to be ball players to 'defend a bit better' or be a busy **** (whatever the fuck that means), there is an entire skill set involved with playing in that area of the pitch that can't just be taught to 'footballers' over night.

The fact is that when Dier didn't play we looked fucking fragile in the the middle of the park because we didn't have that dedicated defensive midfielder and he just couldn't play every game; it's not sustainable. I know you would rather a midfield 3 who all play wonderful flowing football but that's just not reality; not just for us, but for every team. We need a player with a defensive mindset and the appropriate skill set to compete with Dier in that position, because I sure know that I don't want a fucking midfield 3 of Bentaleb, Onomah and fucking Lesniak playing in the Champions League - or the Premier League for that matter - next season.

Dier isn't a super star but you make a very good point - if Dier has a good tournament in an England shirt he will come back as a real superstar and this will surely have an impact on who we bring in (someone to rotate or cover not someone to force Dier back in the pecking order)
