re.

"Harry has said we are not close to signing anyone, thats coming from someone on COYS who luckily tonight got to meet him and the players at Orient, Even got to go in the changing rooms too."

I was at the game tonight and if Harry was there he kept himself VERY well hidden.

This smells a bit like Mata's agent or Valencia's chairman trying to flush out a bid from Arsenal.

Can anyone imagine the scenario where Levy bids more than the minimum required for the release clause ?

I think either

1) release clauses don't formally count outside Spain

or

2) offers can be rejected if there is a superior bid which also exceeds the release clause

I didn't think release clauses mattered outside of Spain...perhaps we are trying to outbid Arsenal in the hope that deters them and Mata has no choice but to consider our bid

the article specifically says they are obliged to sell to a foreign team for 21m before august 1st...

maybe its a gentleman's agreement

Guardian:

According to an agreement reached when Mata last renewed his contract, Valencia are obliged to sell to a foreign club that matches the €21m bar before Monday. Spurs have made an offer that exceeds that minimum fee in order to strengthen their hand.

That last line is almost an oxymoron.

Mata would be an excellent signing. Imagine a Llorente/Vucininc up top with Bale, VdV, Mata as the 3 behind him and Luka & Sandro as the 2 CMs, football porn right there. Shame Mata is out of our league, nice thought while it lasted

I'm guessing the gooners have offered more than the clause too, it's just that we've offered 1 mil euros more than they have, if those reports are true of course

Affelay,VDV and Bale would be just as good.

Nobody knows. As i've said, at some point we'll make a signing that can loosely be connected with B&Y and either POTL himself or his disciples will triumphantly hail it as a vindication of the cryptic.

As far as the actual solution goes, IMO we've been linked with pretty much everyone now and there's no mileage in keeping it a secret any more so it would be nice if old phantom did a 'Goat' and coughed up. Unless of course the old poltergeist enjoys having a giggle at everyones expense.

by my reckoning its about 5 AM pommie time

I think A & C is actually a bed wetter :eek:mg: comes from drinking Sambuca on a school night.

Very dangerous if he uses his lap top in bed.

I heard a rumour our last resort option was roque Santa cruZ :eel:
Thinking about it if we didnt get anyone he would be an upgrade

For Christ's sake man, delete that post. DoublePivot is already on the verge of a mental breakdown. If he sees that, he'll probably lose it completely and go on a rampage through his mid-western town with a kalashnikov.

That's exactly what I think it is. Although I believe the offer is geniune and that we won't mind too much as we know it'll keep the fans believing that we're in the hunt for big names.

To answer the second point, a thought occurs that this is surely one of Levy's trademark deals.

I can readily imagine him saying something like "Look. You have 21m as the minimum figure but we'll pay you 25m. Of that, 12.5m will be up front, then we'll give you another 2.5m next summer. We'll then pay another 1m when he's played 25, 50 and 100 games. If we finish top six then you get another 1m, and for top four it's 2m extra. And if he represents his country during the season, that's another 1m. If he reaches 15 goals+assists then we'll pay another 2m and finally if he can go the whole season without trying to fuck Peter Crouch's wife then we'll pay the final installment of 2m."

Given most of our players are bought using deals like this, it's little surprise it takes us so long to sign anyone.

isn't something about tax in spain- even if you match a contract clause if the bid is unwelcome the club can force you to pay the tax on transfer:shrug:
