Toby and 20m for Martial.. I could see this happening the closer we get to close of window without a signing.

I don't get this. It's not your money. If the manager wants him, so be it. No matter what the club spends on players, you will still pay the same for your match tickets, kits, etc. Wouldn't you rather watch a strengthened side?! We clearly aren't spending that money on another target, as he is our preferred, so get over it.
We all want to watch a strengthened side and i agree that there must be some investment simply to stand still, but we will all benefit from a financially well run club. League position is correlated more to wages than transfer spend (meaning either high wages lead to squad stability or huge uncertainty/value destruction in transfer spend). If we over extend financially then we could well end up like Leeds or Villa and none of us want that.

Grealish is NOT worth 35m atm. Outrageous really. Very bad value and yet there will still be people who want us to spunk silly money just to bring someone in.

Look elsewhere.

I agree it is too high, however if Poch improves him which I was certain he would like he does with the vast majority of players in just one year his value would be £50m+.

You say look elsewhere like we haven't only got the rest of today and until 5pm tomorrow. That's how Sissoko's occur. Poch obviously wanted Grealish and we haven't bought him, whether the price is too high or a reflection of the current market we haven't given Poch a player who would have improved his options.

But that's a debate for another thread.....

Be shocked if DL spent £35m on him (then again, Sissoko.....)

What a weird window.
The market is so mad now that it doesn't seem all that strange. How much would we have considered outrageous for Sessegnon?

Don't be posting on here with your reasoned argument. The prevailing narrative is one of blind panic and that Daniel Levy's useless.

Leeds again. No we are not ever in danger of going down the Leeds road. Leeds didn't just spend a couple of extra million here and there.

Yeah because we've left ourself all the time in the world to do that. Which is my problem with all this last minute dealing, when real targets do t materialise we end up with nothing or last minute donkeys, it's really never worked out that well for us.

I do agree with you on Grealish however

Thanks for the considered reply.

My main objection is that it sets a precedent for future windows. Clubs will understand that they can hold us to ransom and we will bend.

In effect it is not the 10m extra here that concerns me... it’s the 10m in EVERY transfer that worries me.

It’s important Liverpool are an anomaly and not singlehandedly raising transfer fees for everyone.

Édit : if we have any sense then we’ll have been working on alternatives ..

The ‘not your money’ comments baffle me. No, it’s not our money. But we are clearly working within a pretty tight budget. Tighter than our competitors, as noted by Poch. So, even though we are not taking the financial hit personally we are aware of the consequences of overpaying for certain players, both in terms of our budget and of the perception of our willingness and capacity to pay in future.

It’s a legit concern.

That's not true, just cause you bend on one or two deals, doesn't mean you bend on all. Walk away if the deal doesn't suit, but for those extra special players, pay a bit more.

Poch is great at improving players but it also needs the player to buy into that.... for every Alli or Winks there is an NKoudou or Jansen...Neither of whom we can sell at any price it seems this window but both we were jumping up and down about buying. We spend 35m on Grealish and he doesn't take to Pochs training etc that's a lot to risk on essentially a 50/50 bet at 20-25m it makes sense... at 35m that's a 40% higher risk.
