There were plenty last summer - Imbula, Kramer, McCarthy, Bender, Witsel etc.

Players we never actually tried for, but fed out the rumours to appease the entitlement moaners and disguise the Dier masterplan

Really?

If you want to know how high fees will be this summer, Watford rejecting 20 million for Deeney is a great example

Uhhh, pretty sure ITK confirmed that we went in for Witsel but Zenit couldnt get a replacement in so it didnt get done. I'd hardly call that a smokescreen. I'd call that a failure to learn lessons from the previous like 5 windows.

There were players we tried for and didn't get, players we enquired about and not followed up on, and then there were stories made up by agents/journalists for their own gain. To think we have been watching/courting a player for the best part of a year(that I know of) just to deflect interest away from another target is nothing short of ridiculous. I'm sure clubs on occasion do leak stuff to hasten other deals but I think you are lumping general intetest and every rumour in as a smokescreen just because it doesn't pay off.

It sounds like on both sides we have the player on board and that the hold up, as usual, will be agreeing a fee. With AZ I can't imagine it would be difficult but it seems like VJ may be our backup plan should we not be able to agree a fee with Marseille which will seemingly be more tricky.

Marseille reportedly want €40m which is around £35m I think. Clearly we're not going to pay that and we know that before long OM will have to settle before the end of the month. I would guess we're shooting for closer to £25m tops and banking on the fact that the player wants to join us and that even if another club bids more than 25m, MB is likely to turn them down.
€40m is roughly £31m - not a ridiculous fee considering the market and TV money. Just depends if MP sees him as a priority or not.

Either Jansen or Bats will do me.

Great to have the option of either striker to be honest. The importance of the UCL qualification really changes the scenery at the club and its attraction.....(if they want the $$, they'll go elsewhere). I'm sure Poch won't mind, nor will I.

Smokescreens are more of a fantasy than my Levy stories. A smokescreen was used when Montgomery crossed the Rhine in 1945, it was used again by the Russians at the Seelow Heights on the opening day of their final offensive. Smokescreens are not used to cover the signing of some spotty herbert from a pub league in Holland :D

IMO of course :woot:

EDIT: have a history lesson while i'm at it you peasants

Not a ridiculous fee? Have people gone mental?

Could have had Batshuayi years ago for a quarter of that fee...missed opportunity = paying huge transfer fee now. Fear the same would happen if we didnt sign Janssen...by the time he's 23 or 24, we'd have to pay a much higher fee.

Whoever we end up with, I'm fairly confident it will be the cheaper choice.

Poch has a pretty good hit rate with his transfers for us (N'Jie hasnt really had a decent enough run of games to draw a conclusion as yet IMO) and that points towards a good working partnership between Levy and MP.
corrected for you :bag:

Sometimes you don't move for a player, because you're unsure about how he will develope or whether he has all the attributes needed to play at a certain level...

There are times when your instinct is proved right, other times they progress and you miss the opportunity to sign them due to soaring prices and greater competion for their signature.

Then on the occasions that you do take the punt, you can end up with a Bostock or sometimes you land a Dele Alli, but that's just football my friend.

All I can tell you, is that I feel in safer hands than I have for a long time when it comes to us making those decisions.

I agree but for a club of our size..we shouldn't act like every 5 or 6 million pound transfer needs to hit. Sign Batshuayi for 6m before he goes to Marseille or Benteke before he went to Aston Villa and if he succeeds, you see what it means or if he becomes a bust, its a small price to pay. You can intelligently invest in high potential youth players, we are beginning to get back to that but we lost our way for a few years.

Watch this window! There's going to be a lot of cash overspent on mediocre players (see what Townsend leaves Newcastle for) as everyone has the new TV cash (and all the selling clubs know this). It's an advantage over the other leagues for this season at least but means we will see stupid money spent.
I reckon if you add 20% to what you think is expensive for a player, you'll not be far off what clubs will be expecting.
Unless we wait for Levytime (TM) that is!

Is there any chance that Bats, Janssen + Embolo are merely a smokscreen for a player we have followed, and Poch has wanted for a year - Berahino?
