So many great available left backs out there?

Don't really know, but it's not peak Danny Rose we'd be replacing here.
Trying to take emotional attachment out of the equation, we're looking at a (soon to be) 29 year old left back that very much lives off his athleticism and has had injury problems in later seasons. And even when fit, he's quite a bit off what he did at his peak.

Two years left of his current deal. From our perspective, maybe we can keep him another season and have him, Davies and Sessegnon (hopefully) rotating. But I think this summer is his last chance of getting that final decent contract, and I doubt we'll be jumping at the chance of potentially having a 32-33 year old Danny Rose on our books by offering him an extension.

He's still been one of our best players this season! And when our backs are against the wall he gives 100%. His quality for the first goal against Ajax was crucial to us winning that game.

Fair enough, but would you hand him a new four year deal based on it?

I would yes but I'd want to price him out of a move anywhere else in a year or two's time with a big release clause as part of that.

He's fucked us about before with his flirting with a move in the press and when no one came in for him it was all about a new deal.

I would certainly give Danny a new deal. Would love to see him end his career with us.
But, like @Trix says, load the deal in our favour.

You can't do that.

Really? Sorry to go off topic here, but I really thought that makes sense. So say a player has 3 years left on a contract with team A and is sold to team B for 10 million, what happens to the 3 years on his contract? Doesnt the buying team usually give them a new contract anyway? I figured if you just replace the 10 million with zero dollars, it'd be the same thing? So instead of asking for a fee for the player, you just give the player (and his contract) to another team. Asking honestly. I'm American and the way sports contracts work here is completely different.

Good question, but not for this thread. (y)

A little heads up. The market is ridiculous and crazy, with near zero morals and ethics. We get a very clear idea on a price of a player from agents, mandates, selling club etc. We actually bid what ‘they’ have suggested. We already agree all with player’s agents.

Say for example 50m (just example). It gets out there, and they put it about (selling club), and say they want more, we go back in at 60m. We think we have a deal. One of the agents we work through gets word to us that they are inviting bids 20m more than ours. They make known out bid. Nobody bites. We begin to talk to other payers through their agents, as we think we are getting played. The player now starts wanting answers, and we get blamed. It is now DL’s fault.

Poch is fully aware of this and supports his chairman, who really wants to get deals done early. Conclusion to this, we are very confident on acquiring our main targets. And we will not be spending silly money on AWB.

Cheers Hercules. I’d believe it’s like the Wild West out there. I suspect us men on the street have no real idea how much of a circus it is out there to get players. There seems to be agents acting for everyone!

Thanks for the info Herc. I guess this is the transfer climate now. It's no coincidence that very few clubs are getting deals over the line atm, selling clubs may as well hold out for as long as possible to see if a better offer comes along. I imagine that is particularly true when you're in the market for players like Ndombole or Lo Chelso, who are courted by the richest clubs in Europe.

May be why we're seeing reports like the "Lo Celso pushing Betis for a move" leak out. If they know the club has agreed to a fee and then moves the goalposts they're going to need to do some lifting to get out.

Thanks Herc.

Selling clubs still need their own selling deadline, because they need to do their own shopping too, with the funds they get from their sales.

Btw, I can't imagine this nonsense helps the players; FIFA or UEFA or whoever, should come up with better regulations to make things run smother.

Good to see we are getting our excuses in nice and early this year. The market is what it is, there's no point complaining about it, like every other club we either accept the new reality or we don't (and like every other club we have a bucket load more TV money to soften the blow). Still hopeful of a brave new dawn and clearly early days but this transfer window is already starting to have an unwelcome air of familiarity about it.

That's not truly it though, is it? We aren't one of the top top clubs (Real, Barca, PSG, City, United), so anytime we bid for a guy the selling team will think "well if Spurs are bidding this much I wonder how much we can get from one of those other clubs!" and move the goalposts until they realize the bigger clubs aren't coming in. It is what it is unless there is a release fee to be paid.
