I'll be interested to see how this plays out if we get injuries to the likes of Kane, Eriksen etc. I agree about not buying mediocre players for the sake of it but christ, there must surely be a realisation at the club that in this day and age you have to spend big sometimes in order to move forward. This is especially important if you can offer CL football!

This whole experience brings back memories of the Sugar era where he refused to sanction £6 million for Sir Les in 1996 (who went to Newcastle to score goals galore) only to spend that much on him when he was all but done! That era saw us fall behind the rest, this is different as we will probably still be in the top 6 (I hope)

Time will tell I agree, what a way to gamble though?!

Who do we buy to replace Kane or Eriksen? That we can realistically afford and will be happy sitting on the bench for most games of the season?

Martial maybe? £80m (- Toby) and we'd have probably lost Toby in the bargain so have to buy De Ligt for what £50+m

Bale would've made the difference £100+m + wages but Ronaldo leaving fucked that up, even if it could have happened (it almost definitely wouldn't/couldn't).

We've done the gambling thing on Janssen and the experienced proven Prem goal scorer on Llorente (both still at the club btw). Who is realistic?

Grealish would have been a good signing imo, but £30m for a bench warmer and Championship player was too much, maybe, we'll see. The division in the Grealish thread shows how much and how many doubted the signing, could he have stepped into Eriksen's shoes if he was injured? Maybe but a bit optimistic really.

The biggest things this summer are the stadium, Poch & Harry contracts, Lloris winning the WC and most of our first team having good a good WC, then signings in that order imo.

I don't know if Levy not signing someone for Pochettino is going to cause a rift but from Mauricio's words and body language he doesn't seem pissed off to me but I may be wrong.....

It's little things like going cheap on targets.. Janssen was the cheap alternative to Batshuayi, then we had to buy Llorente to make up for that fuck up.. End of it we spent the same amount of money we wouldn't do for Bats. Same thing happened with Nkoudou, Njie, finally just bought Lucas for decent money. There are players out there who can provide depth that don't cost 100 mil.

I think that a player that will improve us, who is willing to come, who is willing to accept what we pay and who's club are willing to sell to us is perhaps a smaller pool than many might think.

Not impossible obviously, but not so easy either and with Poch's love of a small squad it would probably also be one in and one out so more risk. All of which combined with clubs not willing to take our fringe players made it all a bit difficult. It's clearly less than ideal but I think it is at least understandable.

So you don't think we could find someone good enough to replace sissoko? How many games are winks, wanyama and dembelle going to manage this season with their injury troubles? Grealish would have been perfect but we fucked it. But there must be another cm out there. Willing to come? There are only maybe 10 teams in the world more attractive than us. Accept what we pay? We have the lowest wages to turnover ratio in the league at 41%, liverpool spend about 70%. We can afford quite a bit. £95k a week sissoko could free up funds aswell.

Just hope skipp or onomah can step up if required.

Tbh i'm not that worried about our squad so much but the message it sends our players is that we have no ambition. Walker got a pl winners medal last year, how many of our players might think they could do better elsewhere?

I understand they've spent a lot and have improved, but it's not that big a call when you consider we finished above them for about the last 8 seasons bar 1.

We hear it every year, but you make it sound like we're big under dogs to get near them lol

Can I ask how have they (Liverpool) not got HG player issues and where have they found all their cash from?

Apologies if this isn't the thread for it.

We couldn't get the players we wanted? Or we couldn't agree with selling Clubs in a crazy market?

To be honest, if we couldn't aquire who we wanted to improve a very good team, I'm fine with that.

No point stock piling players Poch doesn't even want, let alone thinking about trying to move them on in a years time.
No offence to you Pinky but I’m getting fed up of reading this line as an excuse for us to not sign a player.

97 out of 98 teams in the top 5 European leagues signed at least 1 player except 1, yes our beloved THFC. Every single one of them 98 teams has a objective for the season whether it is to stay up, consolidate their position, push for Europa league spot, push for CL spot or push for League/retain it. None of them stand still as doing just that means you’re going backwards as others around you improve.

The last time I checked our team has won the square root of fcuk all having thrown away good positions because of lack of squad depth/lack of quality/lack of experience/or whatever excuse you choose to make. THEY CAN BE IMPROVED, but that’s where we as a club fall short.
We have a board/owner/chairman/coach/manager/or whoever, that lacks the balls to push the boat out a little bit to get them elusive player when the chance arises only to panic in the last day or 2 ending up with a N’jie, N’koudou, Sissoko, etc, because our original target didn’t fit our supposed profile.

2 summers back we had both Mane & Wijnaldam (sp) at our new training ground, meeting & speaking to MP, happy to join if a deal could be struck. This is straight from the players themselves, or via their agents, that’s as real ITK as it gets. Our hierarchy failed to get the desks done & they went on to sign for LFC. I’m convinced that if they had signed, and Batshuayi who we wanted but refused to pay the fee, we’d have won the league ahead of CFC. Instead we ended up with Nkoudo, Sissoko & Janssen ?‍♂️

We’ve finished 23 odd points behind MCFC so hell bloody yeah this team/squad needs improving yet we’ve done nothing. The best ITK of them all MP, I pay no attention to ITK on here, said himself we will get something done a few weeks back yet nothing. That just simply tells me we as a club are happy with the status quo. Challenging for top 4, not league, whilst winning zero trophies (last major one 27 years back) & having a net spend of near zero.

We’ve become the new AFC but without the trophies, oh how we laughed (foolishly) at them yet we’ve morphed exactly into them.

Anyone who tries to defend the badly wee money grabbing rat now needs their head examined. He can come out with all the shit he wants now but at the end of the day the club, manager and supporters have all been let down once again by this miserly twat. Signings were needed and he had enough time to do it because he voted for an early closure of the window. Stick your excuses were the sun don't shine Levy you useless piece of shit.

Eloquently put.
Do you have an actual point you’re making? Or just shouting into a vacuum?

The arnesen haydays are gone! Transfer windows will be boring from now on - it’s a sign of where we’ve come...
Poch touched on it before about how we need to operate in TWs. It’s only worth dipping in if we’re upgrading the 1st 11... swapping like-for-like benchwarmers isn’t gonna cut it - exciting as it may be, making signings...
Virtually everyone is on Sissoko’s case and yet so many in here were clambering for a similar outlay today, just for the fix of a ‘signing’.

I fucking love this squad! I’m so excited to see what Lucas will bring this season.

Those complaining about ticket prices and the likes - your paying to see the best striker in Europe and one of the most exciting young teams about...fuck the signings! COYS!!!!!

For what it's worth I think we still owe you one cryptic solution.

Play it again Sam
From Casablanca
White House in Spanish
The White House is in Washington DC
District of Columbia
Barrio is the Spanish word for a neighbourhood or district
Barrios of Colombia

It obviously fell through but we were interested in him.
Man I was waaaaay off. I don’t think anyone guessed him for that one!

Can you imagine if we reach another semi final of a domestic competition or any knockout game for that matter, go 1 up can't close and lose again. I'd feel as a player that we will never get past that as a team.

Just a thought: are we actually paying 20% of the stadium now AS a consequense of 0 spend? Depending on the results - we should Get a massive profit this year?

The debacle over Batshyai and Levy’s incompetence re dealing with transfers where he didn’t have the upper hand is exactly why Paul Mitchell left

Janssen was a bargain basement punt - like Njie, N'koudou, Stambouli, Fazio and Capoue. All low cost, all sold on or loaned out because they were/ are not good enough.

I'm talking about a top player (or two) that may cost us 50-60 mill that will challenge for a place in the 1st team. Someone Poch has identified and wants. If that player is Martial go for it. If Poch doesn't want Toby let him go and go for a replacement. Whatever it takes but not this!

This is a gamble, if the last 3 seasons have shown us anything it's that our squad is very good but cannot see us through a season that yields a trophy. This is all without too many serious injuries to key players. Every squad needs new faces to freshen things up. Other clubs will also know how we play and what they need to do to stop us - some will not succeed but some will.

Really hope you are right but this window just shows us that the powers that be are not prepared to put in that bit extra to push us on. Let's wait and see - I hope this will not affect Poch's ambitions for the club.

We had been finishing above City - then they sorted their weaknesses out and clicked

Liverpool have gone a long way to solving this big weaknesses just by signing a competent keeper

We haven’t addressed any of ours

I think increasing some of their wages by considerable amounts shows ambition. I think moving them into a brand spanking new state of the art stadium shows ambition.

Ambition isn't just buying players. Would it have been great to bring in new, impressive players, yes but to say we don't show any ambition is hyperbole.

We did not improve that shows a lack of ambition. Or do you think we can challenge for the league/cl without improving?
