I think if we do, it'll be another young/unproven striker. And even so, I don't think Benteke would agree to come with Kane being so clearly the No 1 and us being incapable of guaranteeing Champions League.
He'd have been here already were it not for AVB's meddling. 24 too old for you? :sneaky:

Haha actually I really wanted him at the time. Personally, I'd have gone with Remy that summer as IMO he was the economical choice and I was impressed with his debut term with QPR, but for the fee I'd easily have preferred the Prem-proven and considerably younger Benteke to Soldado. I think he also would have been a much better fit for AVB's lone striker system.

However, at this point after how much Benteke has proven (honestly, that he's come back with this aplomb from an Achilles tendon rupture is incredibly impressive IMO), I don't think he'd go anywhere to be second choice that can't guarantee CL. I think Wolfsburg will be a team that will factor prominently in the transfer market this summer, as they have big money as is and now CL allure with all its increased income, and they also like Belgians.

Benteke is very injury prone, so I can see why Villa might want to move him on, but then Ade isn't exactly the most reliable performer either is he.

I wonder when the last time Ade got injured, must have been an age ago.

Pretty sure Spurs will try to do just that IF Soldado and Adebayor can be pushed out.
I still don't think we wouls pay that much for a second fiddle striker. We need backup to Kane, but the big bucks should be spent on players who improve the first team.

We need more than one productive forward. Furthermore, Kane and Benteke could play together to great effect. Benteke is a special player, making it well worth to at least try to make it work.

My only remaining question marks lie in his physical condition and proneness to injury.

But Pochettino doesn't really play with two strikers. We need more than one productive forward, but we don't need to part with £20m to get that.

Kane is versatile, and doesn't always have to play the no 9 role. Add cup games into the equation, and there will be enough games to go around.

£20 m is a small sum for a special player. The trouble begins when similar money is thrown around for the Soldados and Paulinhos of this world. For the record I was wary of both at the time.

In fact, he is not. When he has been moved to accommodate Soldado on the pitch at the same time, Kane has been quite inapt.
However, I do think the squad needs 2 really good strikers, but not for the purpose of fielding both at the same time.

Always nice to find we watch different players.

I would be very happy for us to go after Benteke, Austin or Berahino. I like Ings a lot but I'm starting to worry that he's not enough of a natural finisher to play instead of Kane if he went down injured (look at that chance vs us last wknd).

I realise Benteke, Austin and Berahino would want to start every week but i think we have MORE than enough games to go around and there's no reason why we couldn't partner Kane with one of these guys for certain games. Imagine a duo of Kane with any of those 3 and we're on to a winner.

The issue is that all 3 are gonna be costly. The upside is that I'd expect all 3 would welcome the move.

I disagree. Kane has been very ineffective in a deeper role when playing with Soldado. Benteke is good, but it's not like £20m for him is the bargain of the century.

No player would ever be considered the bargain of the century at the price £20m, so clearly Benteke wouldn't be thought of that way. Is that important?

You clearly don't think as highly of him as I do, which is fair enough.

Unless we inexplicably want to burn out Kane by January every year, we'll need two capable no 9s. I can't think of anyone who's available and as good as Benteke, but wouldn't mind too much if Ings came in instead.

On sheer talent, I don't think anyone would disagree with you, but there is just no way Benteke would agree to come to Spurs to be No 2. As someone alluded to earlier, it'll be tough enough convincing Ings to do that, and he's a far more versatile player than Benteke or Kane and has scored far fewer Prem goals than Benteke.

Ings is a Southampton fan. That, coupled with Pelle's recent form, IMO indicates that the Saints will try hard to sign him.

See no valid reason not to at least try to sign Benteke. Well... apart from the fact that we'll neither manage to get rid of Adebayor nor Soldado, so let's stop doing this to ourselves
