My take on Modric leaving is this, irrespective of how much Chelsea bid, and how much Modric wants to leave, he is tied down by a long term contract. He will be worth the same amount next summer so why sell him this year?

playing devils advocate for a second, we keep him and he has a decent enough season, not nearly as eye catching as this one....could go from 50 to 30 million, and it means we have to start again a year down the line in terms of our midfield dynamic....this is based on the assumption that we wouldn't finish in the top 4.

not saying thats remotely accurate for a second...just floating this stuff

I don't think I have blinkers on. I do think that Daniel Levy's position will be virtually untenable if he sells Modric, and therefore I don't think he will sell him. I could imagine him making a deal with Modric to stay for another year, or to stay and see how it works out, or even to stay until Christmas - just so he can point to his statement and the fact that it is no longer Summer, adn state without blushing that he stuck by his word. But I do believe he will stick by that, as he has backed himself into a corner. I think that makes me a realist, actually.
I think anyone who just ignores this and points to the sole evidence of precedence with Carrick and BarbaGit, ignore the totally different situation and the better quality of players we now have, is, in fact, blinkered.

If you know that Levy/Redknapp have been desperately running around in search of a replacement you should provide evidence of your source to the Mods and then post it as ITK.

If only you were as convincing as you seem to think you are, eh?

spot on post!!

1) there is no way back from this statement for Levy

2) modric said prior to Levy making the said statement he wanted to go (daily fail being trusted) so modric saying he wants to go again will make zero difference

3) he will be worth just as much next year so we may as well at least try to get champs league again with him for this season

4) chelsea arent gonna pay £50m (imo)

5) there is simply nobody better we could even hope to attract, its simply not worth the money we would get to us...either finacially or footballing wise

when Levy says "not for sale at any price" & "we will not entertain any offer from chelsea or any other club"...& "we consider the matter closed"

ITS CLOSED

Thats why I dont think it will happen either.

The money issue is the most pertinent of all, it always is in business.

Levy will spend big if Modric goes?

Kind of strange to say "if Modric goes I'll splash the cash" after saying "I wish to make it absolutely clear, as I have said previously, that none of our key players will be sold this summer. We are building a team for the future to consistently play at the highest level and retaining quality players is crucial to that.

"In respect of Luka Modric, we are not prepared to sell, at any price, to Chelsea Football Club or any other club.

:-|

I just don't believe that.

I cant help but play devils advocate in these situations...its a defense mechanism.

If I had a free bet on whether I think Modric would still be a Spurs player on September first...yes I would put my money on it.

daniel levy is nothing if not an intelligent business man...

he controls tottenham hotspur...he would not have ben so unequivical in his statement regards Luka Modric if there was ANY doubt in his mind..

Luka will 100% not be sold, its not even worth talking about...there is no room for debate in that statement..

i dont fear chelsea the team i fear most in modric stuff is the c**** that are staying quiet and in background. we all know them!

but i really want end of this modric leaving bs. sign couple of top players . get settled in and start season high at very least. if it goes tits up then at least we have tried but like harry said with couple of big signings anything can happen. i def believe that 2. teams around us not that great at all.

Player Power rules these days. And you seem to forget that Modric claims that Levy agreed to consider any bids that may arise when he signed his new contract last year. Now this may not be in writing but if he comes back this week and demands a transfer then Levy will set a price (probably huge) and if somebody is willing to pay this price (Chelsea, ManU or City most likely imo) then Harry will come out saying that the player wants to go and how can we keep a player that doesn't want to be here etc etc and before we know it, he's off.
Not what I want to happen but watch this space.
As for replacing him...i agree almost impossible even with 50mil to burn but maybe a change in system with 2 holding midfielders (aka Sandro and dare i say it... Parker) with Van der Vaart in front (in the centre) and then Harry spends big on creative wide men (aka a Marin or a Hazard) and obviously we will have our shiny new striker(s) up top as well. All speculation though...

he hasnt said "if Modric goes I'll splash the cash" though.

I was saying that in response to this.

brownhead said:
After Hazard or Marin big time, if Modric goes, he will for big bid, guaranteed im told

Which basically implies, if Modric goes, he will bid big (splash some cash), which I don't believe is something that's being thought about.

no, no & no again..please read below & answer how the hell u came up with that??

STATEMENT BY CLUB CHAIRMAN DANIEL LEVY

"I wish to make it absolutely clear, as I have said previously, that none of our key players will be sold this summer. We are building a team for the future to consistently play at the highest level and retaining quality players is crucial to that.
"In respect of Luka Modric, we are not prepared to sell, at any price, to Chelsea Football Club or any other club.
"We made our stance on this issue abundantly clear in writing to Chelsea. They chose to ignore it and then subsequently made the offer public.
"For the avoidance of any doubt, let me reiterate that we shall not enter into any negotiations whatsoever, with any Club, regarding Luka.
"We now consider this matter closed."

This is all said before the inevitable transfer request comes in this week or next and he demands to go. I wish the world was as black and white as you seem to think but it isn't.

No something like that has never been said by Levy. Do you want me to show you the old ones? Or how about you look 'em up yourself and tell me how did you come to the conclusion that Levy has said something like this before.

Levy will be very stupid to go back on his word. It could make it very tricky for him to keep his possition for it would pernemently damage not only his reputation as Chairman (other clubs would fail to take him seriously) but also has a bussiness man.

And also you calling the situation black and white when you include words like ""inevitable" is laughable.

If leandro is coming January we should keep Pav until at least Jan. Best of a very bad bunch IMO

this.

But any of all our strikers would do. Prob. Pav would be my prefrence. But more because he seems like he wants to stay. And that he can always get you a goal

Nobody will pay £50m for Modric - and be sure that would be the price.

Wow there's some mega ITK from Brownhead.
I was hoping the Parker thing was dead with recent developments but Brownhead suggests not.

Luka will 100% not be sold, its not even worth talking about...there is no room for debate in that statement..

He will be sold if the right money is offered, old cliche in life, money talks!

And for these reasons:

1) Ok, he has said he is willing to stay, but he also wants to go to Chelsea if he could. He has said this all of this, if he didnt want to go, why say anything at all. Given the free, no consequence choice, he would rather be at Chelski! FACT

2) If he has an average or poor season, because of all this transfer talk, not wanting to be at THFC, us not performing, or just because he is having one. His value will be 10-20m less next year, FACT (kinda)

3) Daniel Levy is a businessman first, football fan second. £30 - £50 mil, is a profit on what we paid, and alot of money for one player. He will cash in why the iron is hot and before the new money rules come in. THFC will not suffer moneywise no matter how furious we all will be if he is sold. There will still be 36k at WHL each game this season, FACT (kinda)

4) Ok, it will hamper our CL quest without him no doubt, but DL can also argue that we didnt qualify this season with him. FACT

5) One player is not bigger than the club FACT

6) DL will issue a statement if he is sold citing the same reasons as Berbatov, Keane and Carrick, in best interests of club. FACT (kinda)

7) And if in DL we trust, then let the man do what he gotta do
