My team to start in the world cup

Butland
Walker Cahill Dier Stones Rose
Winks Henderson Dele
Rashford Sterling
Kane

Its harsh on Lallana, but he is a player which for england has largely flattered to deceive. Dele would enjoy the extra space in midfield on the international stage, while Sterling has never really got going for the national side but if you get him working he could be a seriously good prospect there. Henderson is not all that but putting Dier at CB to get that back three working requires a more balanced midfield and I think he can do a job there. Lallana there would be fun but very brittle.
Aside from the obvious "12" player issue - you need a creator in the final third. Winks is the guy who gets the ball to the creator, but you need someone who can feed Kane and Rashford/Dele/Sterling. Its possible that becomes Dele - but he'll move up higher, and Rashford or Sterling will drop out (probably Sterling).

Yeah, don't see the issue with Henderson and Winks for the time being and Dier strengthens the defence.

I think our best solution is to switch between 3-5-2 and 4-3-3 with Dier switching between CB and DM roles.

Something like this for example:

Butland
Stones Dier Cahill
Trippier---------------------------Rose
Henderson--Winks
Sterling--------------Rashford
Kane
Or play a number 10 with Alli or Lallana in there behind two strikers.

I don't think Henderson is a bad player tbh, That said if Drinkwater could cement a place a Chelsea I'd rather have him next to Winks.

...........................Heaton
..........Stones........Dier..........Cahill
Walker...............................................Rose
...................Winks........Drinkwater
..............................Dele
....................Kane..........Rashford

If everyone was fit of course

I think I'd actually pick Henderson on the basis I can't think of a better option. Dier is a CB for me.

Pick Henderson? I wouldn't even let Jordan Henderson watch the England games on TV lest he have some kind of psychic influence on the match.

Can’t believe none of you guys have got Lallana in your teams, best England player last couple of years.

Trippier------Dier--------Stones------Rose

Winks--------Henderson--------Alli

Lallana-------Kane----------Sterling

Probably our best team which is depressing because that's still nowhere near good enough to compete with the best teams.

I hope this is just a blip for England quality-wise, I know we never even get close to winning anything these days but at least our teams used to look good on paper.

Personally, I think that team could be very good if coached properly.

Did you see Portugal's team that won the Euro's?

Butland

Walker Stones Cahill Rose

Lallana Winks Alli

Sterling Kane Rashford

That team would actually stand half a chance at the WC, and would at the very least be more entertaining than anything we’ve served up in the last decade.

Fully expect to have Dier and Henderson stinking the place out together though.

I think Alli has to play in central midfield for England just because of the lack of depth. Alli, winks, Dier as a midfield 3 with Lallana, Kane and rashford ahead looks pretty reasonable to me.

Sterling has been in phenomenal form this season.

Only reason he didn't make my team was because I think we have to play 3 CB's every one of our CB's is now playing in a three so for continuity sake I think we have to play that way in the national side.

It’s not pressure, it’s playing with inferior players and a much inferior brand of football.

Ronaldo played with inferior players and an inferior brand, but he’s still done the business on the international stage. If you’re good enough, you should still stand out despite the lack of talent in the squad. Sterling hasn’t done that.

Really? Portugal won nothing until Ronaldo was 30, and then they ground their way to a pretty undeserved Euro. Hardly a lifetime of international achievement. And that includes eras when Portugal actually had bloody good players collectively playing in some of Europe's top teams, unlike this England team that Sterling plays in.

I see the sense in that, but even then I'd be tempted to play the 3421 that we play with Lallana and Alli or Lallana and Sterling as the "2" behind Kane. Or play the 343 (3331) and still play him in one of the middle or attacking 3's.

Before 2016 and some of the younger players that have come in. He played in a crap team. Only notable good players were Pepe and Moutinho. And Ronaldo would still put in good performances and get on the scoresheet.

No-one's saying Sterling is anywhere near Ronaldo's level are they. But saying Ronaldo played in shit teams is just nonsense. Look at Portugal's 2006, 8, 10 squads. Players like Ferriera, Pepe, Carvalho, Coentrao, Moutinho, Tiago, Veloso, Simao, Quersma, Nani, Ronaldo,
