Ian Wright made a good point about Loftus-Cheek - absolutely criminal how Chelsea are wasting him.

Although you have to also wonder why Loftus-Cheek didn’t push for another loan or a permanent move (unless he was given assurances he’d have a fair crack of whip?).

I’d take him, although Chelsea being Chelsea they probably wouldn’t deal with us.

Work hosted a charity Q&A with Gareth Southgate, Aidy Boothroyd and Gareth Thomas last night. The Q&A was good but having a beer and a chat with Aidy was the best bit. Funny chap.
Equally - we had John Terry roaming the floors collecting cash for leukaemia. best part was where (quite a snr) trader tapped his card on the reader and said, "this won't give you my home address will it? I know what you're like with wives" classic.

Some of the highlights from the panel.
  • Had to un-do a lot of previous work to get the England camp feeling a place of pride and relaxation. Said the fun had been sucked out of it slightly and there is a lot of work to change that.
  • U21 camp is now a direct replica of the 1st team. The continuity, expectations, and 'feel' are what gives you a winning group not just good technical players.
  • 'threw' the group game against Belguim. They picked the best 11 for the knock out game and gave those players a full prep session + tactics. The group game was a reserve game for them. Felt validated because the KO game went to ET. Said during the game he usually would have brought Kane on but was happy letting the result happen.
  • Didn't have enough time to prep pre WC. All prep focused on set plays (inc pens) and perfecting the system. Therefore he knows a tactical change would have helped during the Croatia game but knew the players couldn't enact it. Also under pressure players revert to what's been schooled into them and he felt for 20mins they lost faith and that caused the loss.
  • Happy with the young team. they learnt from the Euros (failure) that the team had half the amount of minutes than most of the others. When you've had the minutes your 'default' mode is locked in and you do the basics well, or without thought. Hence minutes count. players need minutes to be in the squad, it's simply a scientific fact now.
  • Said the mental side is now huge, and smart players are what counts. Said the team will keep growing as they play more cup finals, more CL games etc which is why it's hard to pick lower-league players. He referenced how Modric v England recognised how England were set-up and adjusted his position to stifle Henderson (make him only pass sideways). Said those players are what wins you games, and those with the experience and calmness under pressure to do it.
  • Selection for England includes looking at the profile. Many of the kids had difficult backgrounds so they help with that, being a role model, and nobody is allowed to deface the badge. It's a self governing model which.....
  • ....Kane, Henderson and Dier are huge enforcers of. Said that Kane trains in a superhuman way and basically has the drive to be better than any player in any position. Therefore nobody is 'allowed' to have an ego as Kane could pretty much learn to do their job. Said that mentality is what wins you tournaments. LOVES that the spurs boys turn up and, regardless of who they are, they have the mentality to win and be professional role models. Speaks to Poch a lot.

  • Spoke to Aidy a lot about Winks. Says he is a "once in a generation player" in how he plays and things. Issue is he needs mins, needs to experience pressure, and needs to grab games. Basically a massively under appreciated player who now needs to win his spot. Seen it before with a lot of players who don't grasp the talent they have
  • Loves KWP - thinks he could easily be the next England RB. Again it's up to him. Although Trent A-A apparently is a beast and a new favourite.
  • Said the kids need mins - all of them. And often ALi drops into u21 training (no media) as it allows him to practice being a captain, and controlling games.

Will update post lunch.

Fabulous stuff, thanks for posting.

The reason for not changing tactics against Croatia when so many of us were crying out for it should have been explained to the country. I think then we would have been more understanding of the defeat. I would have been anyway.

Ive been saying for decades its about having clever players (in regards to spurs) and I think its what has held us as a club back. Its definitely held England back thats for sure.

That last point about Dele is very interesting, as was almost all of that really (cheers for sharing, top work) but it really caught my eye. I've never even considered him captain material but if he is practicing with the U21s and getting the odd chance like at MK, which I thought was just because of the location, that really bodes well for him.

The next squad gets announced on Thursday for the games against Croatia and Spain. What are people's thoughts? I'm presuming Alli and Lingard will be out with injuries and I can't see how some of the World Cup squad players like Loftus-Cheek and Delph can be selected so I'm hoping we get Will Hughes, Jadon Sancho and James Maddison in the squad. I'd also like to see Conor Coady get a call-up given his early season form. He'd be ahead of Tarkowski, Jones, Mawson or Smalling for me.

Kane to get a rest and no other spurs players called up please. Obviously Southgate will call Kane up and continue to flog him to death.

Bit more, as the memory kicks off.

Spoke a lot around data science and it's usages in the modern game.
  • Pre WC, England held the record for fastest penalty kicks. I.e. put ball down get nervous and whollop it. Therefore they worked on mechanisms to make the process methodical, not slow for the sake of slow. Introduced a few techniques around breathing and 'accepting the moment'.
  • Equally there are stats regarding how people operate in pressured situations, the level of confidence, and the risk taken. Southgate referenced Trippier is very cool when isolated at the back and we know he has a quality peg. Therefore Tripps became one of the five pen takers, replacing someone who typically takes it for club. Said there was max confidence that it's going top left or top right every time .
  • Someone questioned Kane's pens....Southgate laughted and simple said, "ice cool"
  • The "underpressure" metric is something they also use when selecting players e.g. Walker in the back 3 - he's good at gassing his way out of trouble. Also it's a good measure of form. Hence Henderson v Dier (and likely explains the shite we've been seeing from Dier)
  • Jordan Pickford"may or may not, but definitely did" have Pen instructions written on the inside of his waterbottle. Southgate cannot "Deny or confirm" he had them on his wrist too.....and if they don't get told off they are def doing it every game. There is a whole team dedicated to helping the keeper with pens
  • Media don't appreciate selections are based on niggles, form etc - it isn't football manager.

Hi mate, can you just clarify when you say "Max confidence that it's going top right or top left"? Do you mean everyone is confident that it's better to shoot top right/left?

Interesting about the water bottle thing. I just assumed everyone did that in knockout competitions, just seems like common sense/basic game preparation to me so I'm surprised that they got told off for it.

Top left or right - trips ability to bang it in their, not that it's the best or worst place to put a pen.

One question...How do you write stuff on the inside of a water bottle? :shifty:

Wow, big changes. Barkley, Sancho, Mount and Maddison all called up.

The likes of Walker-Peters must be wondering whether they'd be full internationals now if we actually let them play.
