Barclay better than I thought.

He's not a bank.

Gareth a very nice man and deserves what luck we got.

I think you undersell Southgate. He has some key characteristics in common with Pochettino. They share an ability to get players to want to perform for them - and with Southgate, he has the disadvantage of having limited and interrupted opportunities to work with them. They also share an ability to make a team out of a squad. This youthful England squad celebrate together in a way that the so-called "golden generation" squad of ill-matched star turns never did.

His tactical ability seems to be sound enough and he doesn't really have the chance to do much individual coaching, but he has homed in on the key skills for a manager of a national team: squad togetherness, the ability to organise a defence in a limited number of sessions and the capacity to inspire individuals to excel for him.

Our three goals were all top-class international moves: real teamwork executed at pace, with one-touch skill and communication. Brazil, Germany or France would have been proud of those moves.

'Barclay'

I think the youth of the squad
is a vital feature too.
As with Pochettino's approach
there is a loyalty engendered
which binds them together.
No cynical old lags.

As Harry Stotttle said on Sky Sports
The whole is more than the sum of its parts
as with Spurs.

Unfortunately it will be a couple of years of being miffed at the international breaks, up until a tournament when I become a die hard England fan once again. Big sigh of relief when club football is back to entertain me over the weekend.

Rooney 8/1 to score a pen tonight, (y)

To be honest I am not in favour of him earning another international cap under the umbrella of this charitable friendly....I'd love to see Gary Lineker come on in the second half and score 6 goals just to beat Rooney's scoring record (y). I think England should play a Rooney selected squad with proceeds going to the fund (and I hope it would raise millions) but why have a 'final farewell' game ??
Lineker didn't and I bet Bobby Charlton would have loved one too...and what about Bobby Moore ??

In June 1973 he made an uncharacteristic mistake to gift Poland a goal as Alf Ramsey's side fell to a 2-0 defeat in a qualifier. When the return match came around three months later, a match England had to win to ensure qualification for the World Cup, Ramsey made the decision to drop his captain and replace him with Norman Hunter. But the Poland match didn't go according to plan as Hunter was robbed of possession to allow their visitors the lead, and England were only able to scramble a 1-1 draw which meant they had failed to qualify.Moore returned to the England side for their next match, a 1-0 friendly defeat to Italy, and that was the last time he played for his country. If anyone deserved a chance for the fans to pay a 'final farewell' and thank him for his services it was Sir Bobby.

I don't put Rooney in the same breath, performance wise, as Charlton/Moore in international matches ......and really do not understand why receiving an international cap is being so trivialised. It is setting a very dangerous precedent.

My humble opinion of course.... but then I am "old school" and to pull on an international jersey in any sport should be done with pride. You should feel that all your efforts have been rewarded and that you are receiving such an accolade purely on merit and recognition that you are amongst the very best available at that particular moment in time...nothing else.

Has a player plying their trade in the USA ever played for England before? I think this whole Rooney thing is a publicity stunt laced with sentimentality personally.

In retrospect we should probably have just swapped Walker for Sancho lol. Real missed opportunity there.
