Watching on an ESPN stream, commentator "I'm not sure if this is a common view in England but Dier is too immobile, he can't turn with the ball, he can't play when things are tight around him"...welcome to life as a spurs fan for the last 2 years.
Strange time to say it though, he's probably been top 3 performer tonight

His relative level of performance is a reflection of the other crap players/performances in the England squad tonight. It doesn't make a dent in Burley's criticism. He could have been the best performer tonight but he would still be slow to play and immobile at the DM.

Well that was 90 minutes wasted, to think I turned down an evening organising a sack full of grass seeds into alphabetical order for that. :wtf:

What a cock up not to get sancho as part of the Walker deal. Could go down as one of the worst transfer decisions of recent times

I may be wrong here but would his case not have been settled by tribunal? He would've been about 15/16 then no?

What a shame, I’m sure we tried but should have insisted on it as a deal breaker
So much this. ITK was he wanted to join us. We quite literally could have said "we want him in part exchange or no deal". We held all the cards.

Huge assumption everybody is making here: that he would have gone for us over Dortmund. I honestly can't see why he would. First-team game time at Dortmund, or training at Tottenham with Walker-Peters while playing the occasional cup replay against Newport County? If I wasn't a Spurs fan that would be a very easy decision to make.

Why wouldn’t he have broken through - if you’re good enough your old enough plus we didn’t have Moura at the time and Poch was after Zaha. Also staying in London would have been a benefit for him

Because since becoming a Top 4 team we've very rarely given young players a chance to show their ability. Look at KWP - through all the England youth teams he was better than Alexander-Arnold. He may well still be more talented. But he's only played two league games despite having been man of the match in both.

Awful
Spurs/Cardiff level of awful
the new awfulness touchstone
Chilwell, Dier and Pickford decent.
Rest? no comment.
Well maybe.
Henderson Maguire, Barkley poor.
Sterling, Rashford extremely poor.
Sterling must have photos on Southgate.
Harry K starved to death.

11 Substitutes and one change on 78 minutes.
WTF.
Could have changed them all to good effect.
If allowed.... I know.
Sancho to start on Monday...as if.

What a nonsense competition

Don't see how playing in London would benefit him more, in Germany he's learning a new culture, playing style and he's out of his comfort zone, he's maturing and particularly at a club like Dortmund where they nurture their young players and there is a clear pathway for youngsters to play in the first team, it's just a perfect storm for Sancho - with young players the comditions and the environment needs to be right for them to progress, don't think he would have got the same luxuries at Spurs.

Anyone who thinks he'd be performing the same way if he was at Spurs is living a fantasy IMO

Work hosted a charity Q&A with Gareth Southgate, Aidy Boothroyd and Gareth Thomas last night. The Q&A was good but having a beer and a chat with Aidy was the best bit. Funny chap.
Equally - we had John Terry roaming the floors collecting cash for leukaemia. best part was where (quite a snr) trader tapped his card on the reader and said, "this won't give you my home address will it? I know what you're like with wives" classic.

Some of the highlights from the panel.
  • Had to un-do a lot of previous work to get the England camp feeling a place of pride and relaxation. Said the fun had been sucked out of it slightly and there is a lot of work to change that.
  • U21 camp is now a direct replica of the 1st team. The continuity, expectations, and 'feel' are what gives you a winning group not just good technical players.
  • 'threw' the group game against Belguim. They picked the best 11 for the knock out game and gave those players a full prep session + tactics. The group game was a reserve game for them. Felt validated because the KO game went to ET. Said during the game he usually would have brought Kane on but was happy letting the result happen.
  • Didn't have enough time to prep pre WC. All prep focused on set plays (inc pens) and perfecting the system. Therefore he knows a tactical change would have helped during the Croatia game but knew the players couldn't enact it. Also under pressure players revert to what's been schooled into them and he felt for 20mins they lost faith and that caused the loss.
  • Happy with the young team. they learnt from the Euros (failure) that the team had half the amount of minutes than most of the others. When you've had the minutes your 'default' mode is locked in and you do the basics well, or without thought. Hence minutes count. players need minutes to be in the squad, it's simply a scientific fact now.
  • Said the mental side is now huge, and smart players are what counts. Said the team will keep growing as they play more cup finals, more CL games etc which is why it's hard to pick lower-league players. He referenced how Modric v England recognised how England were set-up and adjusted his position to stifle Henderson (make him only pass sideways). Said those players are what wins you games, and those with the experience and calmness under pressure to do it.
  • Selection for England includes looking at the profile. Many of the kids had difficult backgrounds so they help with that, being a role model, and nobody is allowed to deface the badge. It's a self governing model which.....
  • ....Kane, Henderson and Dier are huge enforcers of. Said that Kane trains in a superhuman way and basically has the drive to be better than any player in any position. Therefore nobody is 'allowed' to have an ego as Kane could pretty much learn to do their job. Said that mentality is what wins you tournaments. LOVES that the spurs boys turn up and, regardless of who they are, they have the mentality to win and be professional role models. Speaks to Poch a lot.

  • Spoke to Aidy a lot about Winks. Says he is a "once in a generation player" in how he plays and things. Issue is he needs mins, needs to experience pressure, and needs to grab games. Basically a massively under appreciated player who now needs to win his spot. Seen it before with a lot of players who don't grasp the talent they have
  • Loves KWP - thinks he could easily be the next England RB. Again it's up to him. Although Trent A-A apparently is a beast and a new favourite.
  • Said the kids need mins - all of them. And often ALi drops into u21 training (no media) as it allows him to practice being a captain, and controlling games.

Will update post lunch.
this is incredibly interesting....was there more that I missed? Thanks for the info.
