Absolutely buzzing that we got the penalty monkey off our backs, but I can't help think how bloody hard we made this look. We didn't play that well at all imho, and I expected more against a dogged Columbian side. The fact that we struggled to really test Ospina should be a concern. Let's see what England turns up against Sweden, which on paper should be a similar or easier test than the Columbians.

It is a concern yes. I don't think we're good enough to win it but still, we have one of the youngest squads in the WC. A new and young manager. This is a team for the future imo, whatever happens Southgate needs to keep his job and this squad needs to stay together. I think this tournament has probably come a bit too soon and they should really be judged on the next Euro or even the next WC. If nothing else, they've given the English back the love of international football after the clusterfuck of Iceland and Allardyce.

They are through & that's all that matters now.

Kane really held his nerve for his regulation time penalty goal.
The Colombians dragged on their protestations for quite a while.
It was a good few minutes that Kane was waiting with the ball.

Anyone else notice the Colombian player trying to scuff / tear up the penalty spot with his cleats during the commotion & prior to Kane putting the ball down?

painful game to watch, partly because Colombia were little bitches and even more so because Geiger let the game get out of control for a good 15 minutes. that scene after he awarded the pen (quite rightly) where he let Colombia stalk him and Kane around the box for a good 2 minutes and the carded Henderson was crazy. He definitely doesnt deserve another game IMO.

BTW, what a professional and captain Kane is. Never remonstrates with the refs, never flops, never gets in the face of the opposition to wind them up - he just gets up and gets on with it. Especially in a game like this that was so refreshing to see.

oh yeah, Im a huge Dele fan but hes wasted in this side. He's not being used in the most effective way and the other England players arent looking for the runs he makes.

same problem all tournament - you dont have a proper midfield, you have Henderson and three attacking mids. England was better all game but carved out few good chances. I dont see that changing as the tournament progresses.

Don't get me wrong, at the time I'd have much preferred it if Colombia hadn't equalised, but I don't think you can underestimate mentally what a penalty shootout win will do to the team. I'm glad they put us through the pain to grind through like that, it's important that they overcome that kind of enormous pressure at a relatively early stage. Morale will be absolutely through the roof over the next 2/3 days before the Sweden game.

Whether it's the last minute winner against Tunisia, the absolute obliteration of Panama, or a win on penalties against Colombia, this is not "typical England".

I agree and that’s where you win games and our midfield is non existent. Against the better teams we will lose set up as how we are because we will never be able to keep control of the ball. At times it looked a complete mess because of this and it’s no surprise we didn’t create anything.

I came in this thread simply to post something along the same lines. Gary Taphouse (sky commentator) has retweeted one guy who seems to be obsessed with the captaincy issue:

https://twitter.com/triggs35/status/1010943902092800000?s=21

https://twitter.com/triggs35/status/1010896914399875072?s=21

Every one of those (and a couple I didn’t copy over) was tweeted AFTER he scored a hat-trick today. Every pundit says Kane is a superstar and his teammates say he’s vocal and a leader in the dressing room, but Liverpool fan Glen says ‘he doesn’t have it in him’ - after scoring 5 goals in two games.

Beyond parody.

Was curious late last night to see if Glen from Liverpool had anything further to say on whether Kane or Henderson should be captain, having been so adamant that Kane "doesn't have it in him".

He didn't. Complete silence.

Penalties aside, I thought last night showed exactly why Kane got the nod over Henderson. Henderson didn't play badly but was foolish enough to retaliate to Colombia's shithousery and get booked, while Kane was calm throughout and repeatedly dragged teammates away from possible flashpoints.

Was also the best player on the pitch for the first 90 minutes.

Apparently all the players were psychologically assessed for their fitness to take penalties.
Nice to think our three have the right temperament, no doubt thanks in no small part to Poch?

I have some shocking news for you all: Liverpool are being dicks again.

Liverpool's first pre-season friendly is at Chester on Saturday and kicking-off at the same time as the England game. Chester asked for the kick-off time to be changed so it didn't clash with the England game but Liverpool refused. As a result, Chester is now expecting a much lower attendance than they had previously anticipated.

V pleased to win , but i couldn't for the life of me see where a goal was coming from . Dreary for the neutral...daren't imagine how dull the Sweden game will be for the neutral.

I've been ranting on SC before on the subject of the use of arms that's been allowed to flourish in the modern game .
FYI the rules are crystal clear .

Arms are not allowed to be used to gain any advantage whatsoever .

This basic and very sensible rule has been allowed to disappear since i started watching footie . WHY ?

This has meant that brawn has triumphed over skill . George Best ,Stan Bowles even our Jimmy and Gilly would all need a major
steroid course to get near the first team .You require a middleweight boxer physique nowadays because footie is substantially about wrestling which requires upper body strength.

OK , so we're getting pens in the WC , but a defender needs to piggy back a forward and then actually throw him on the ground before a pen is given . Thank christ that is a line that can't (at the moment) be crossed .
