Did a quick search but saw no official Eoro 2008 discussion thread so I thought I would start the ball rolling.

Competition starts this afternoon and, no doubt, many will have different opinions. I'm in Northern Ireland so am kinda used to my team not being there but what about the rest of you.

Will you be watching? If so, who will you be supporting? Who will star? Will Ronaldo cock up for Portugal??

Will the English members be supporting Croatia because of Modric or willing them to lose in a big way. Personally, I think they have a good chance of getting quite far.

Get talking!:)

I reckon Spain or France(if they can come out of their group)will win. Spain always mess up in the big tournaments but this could be their year. I'll be shouting for Croatia because of Modric and becuase they knocked England out:)

I thought that Ribery would be the star of the tournament but he seems to have a knock and I'm not sure if he'll be 100%. Ronaldo will probably do well against the weaker teams but will be shit against the better teams.

'Bout ye fellow Norn Iron-der! I have a sneaky suspicion Russia might surprise. Not sure who's going to win but I'd say Germany and/or Sweden will do well.

I think Ivanshitz off Austria is someone to look out for - hear good things and saw him play on the TV once and looked useful. I, like most (if not all) Spurs fans, will be keeping a keen eye on Modric of course. Purely for my own purposes would like to see Afellay of Netherlands being given a run out - looked very good against us if I remember correctly!

This is a really open tournament so looking forward toit, hope Modric does well and avoids injury. Shame that there is a real lack of Spurs players though, for me that's the only downside but maybe we could be watching a few future players.

A shame that Arshavin is suspended for the first few games.

I feel slightly depressed today that we're not in it. As much as England piss me off, it's always good to look forward to a major international competition!

I am thoroughly enjoying the English coverage of the tournament. As far as I can tell, this tournament will comprise only of Ronaldo and Torres.

I've got a couple of quid on Russia to win it. Should be an alright tournament, though it doesn't feel right with England in it.

Belive me David Villa is a LOT more effective in Spain then Torres and I am certain it will stay that way. Villa will outscore Torres and Spain will win is my bet. Ive seen them a couple of times and they are amazing they outplayed Italy a couple of mounths ago and they look really quite good. Germany will also do well!

FORZA ITALIA!!!

I just hope we are not expected to support this shadowy new nation state "The Premiership" in place of England. The coverage could be much better/less myopic than usual if they can avoid that.

Its a bit pathetic really, been listening to the Beeb on the internet and they seem to have adopted C. (Divey) Ron as an England player--apparently no one has told them that he just recently stated his desire to play for Real Madrid.

I'm not sad that England isn't in it this time, we didn't deserve it and if we still had by some amazing amount of luck managed to qualify we'd have probably played so bad that it would've been damn hard for the English press to pretend like we won the tournament every time we scored a goal.

I think that Croatia (Luka!--that's who I'm following) is the dark horse of the tourney; Italy and Germany are the favs, Spain always look good but choke--can't consider them a fav until they are holding the trophy! If Russia can survive the group stages w/o Arshavin (they've a lot of good players besides him, of course) then they could do well, IMO. Turkey always looks dangerous as well, can play the spoiler--will be interesting to see how they do against Portugal this afternoon, they are loaded with talent.

Funny how many of us (I totally agree with your post, COYS) are saying 'Spain always choke and you'd have to be mad to back them...they're my tip to win.'

i really cant see any team miles ahead of others in this one, Germany should and probably wil lget to the final, just because there run is so easy! but the likes of Spain, Italy Holland France could easly have some upsets agasint some of the other teams, might see croatia or the Czechs get a good run in this, and the russians may even suprise afew

saying that i can see it being Germany vs Spain or Italy final

Do you realise that technically Switzerland and Czech Republic are better than England :eek:mg:

The Czechs beat the Swiss 1-0; Sverkos out foxed the Swiss back line to get in on the keeper and finished despite hitting it poorly. Some are saying the Swiss deserved better, the first no-call on the hand ball should have been a penalty for sure (the second, well not much in that one), but in the end they had plenty of chances but failed to make good on any of them--that plus a little bit of defense from the Czechs equals a win. If you can't convert on your chances you don't deserve to win...

Just seen the Portugal squad, didn't realise just how deep their quality goes. Wanted to see Veloso play but he's on the bench. Guessing Moutinho is the guy keeping him out, anyone know much about him? As you can tell my European football knowledge is extensive

Lots of quality yes, but I don't think they will be a serious contender since they lack a top-class striker. Gomes is good but not very good, and too small as well.
