Just wondered if anybody else had heard the Times podcast this week with Gabriele Marcotti and Guilleme Balague. Gus Poyet gave a relatively interesting interview, although everything was very diplomatic and he didn't give much away. Most interestingly, Balague said he'd been to a Spurs training session recently and even Ramos was surprised at the basic level of tactical training he was having to do with the squad- the quote went something along the lines of "it was like they hadn't done basic tactical training for two years". I loved Jol, but I think alot of people feel that this may have been an issue, and it's got to be a good thing that Ramos has recognised this and is putting work into solving it.

The thing is, as Jol has said on many occasions he didn't want players to be stuck in positions. He wanted to create a free flowing team that moved about so it was unable to be defended against, he was never given the players to complete this.

We saw a few times last season the type of play that he wanted, but I guess that doesn't help when you get a new coach and he plays a solid, structured formation.

It is very easy to create a rumour slagging off the old manager. But it really does no-one any good so why bother ???

I'd much rather that we just look forwards and stop raking over the past. Jol got us to 5th two seasons in a row and deserves some respect, regardless of whether or not we thought he was the right guy to take us forwards.

Exactly. Thus:
it's got to be a good thing that Ramos has recognised this and is putting work into solving it.

Nobody's slagging Jol off... I think Real_madyidd summed it up perfectly by saying that the two managers had different philosophies, each of which neccessitate their own training methods. There probably is no objective "better" method, but there certainly will be one which is "better for Spurs" at this point in time.

Interesting coaching news.

Guillem Balague:

“I was at the Spurs training ground this week. I was amazed that some of the tactical work that Juande was trying to put across to the squad just caught many players by surprise. As if they hadn’t done anything for two years, as though they were sixteen again - ‘Oh, what’s he want us to do? He wants us to run because this is an offensive tactic? Oh right.’ It was a bit surprising. I think that is something that will affect the way that Juande will improve the side.”

Reports are coming in today that both Juande Ramos and Avram Grant are extending their training regimes.
Spanish football pundit Guillem Balague, who seems to get the inside scoop on all things Spanish in the Premier League, has come out with a pretty shocking illustration about the shambolic state of Tottenham’s training sessions. In this week’s Times Game podcast Balague says:

The Daily Mail is today reporting that Juande Ramos has continued his fitness quest by telling Tom Huddlestone to stop scoffing Big Mac meals, and to get on the treadmill…or face an extended stay on the bench. So how long before we get to see an upsurge in Spurs’ fortunes with lean players leaping around the pitch with boundless energy?

It's all press speculation of course, so we'll see what happens in the 'real world', ie on the pitch.

Today may well be the day when the extra training makes a difference or not. We need a win, by all accounts we're a 'better team' than them. If we drive for a win for 90 mins, we should get it. Perhaps? Perhaps not?

Why was Gollum Balague allowed on the training pitch? Didn't know we gave hacks free reign.

Is he Juande's mate?

Speculating? He was there. Speculating is an educated guess.

I had so many "no one knows what goes on in training" posts. It's nice to get some insight.

Hi gibbs :)- Fair enough, he was there, but the conclusions he drew were speculative. 'As if they hadn’t done anything for two years, as though they were sixteen again'

He may well well be correct in those conclusions, we'll see. What counts is what happens on the pitch.

I would not class him as a hack. He is one if the best around. I have always liked his insight.

You probably recognize him:

must be some fact behind it, Hudd has taken a loan of some fitness equipment (Hudds loan thread by flatters) so it does look like he is trying to get fitter.

Yeah I know the guy. It's certainly interesting to hear, but I just don't understand why a Spanish journo would be on the training pitch at The Lodge.

You probably recognize him:

He is a good guy and I really like him on Revista La Liga, but he is pretty useless when it comes to information. He gets so much wrong. I like watching and listening to him, but I'd say his insight is pretty poor. He's one of my favourite sports journalists, but I really wouldn't say he is one of the best around.

As regards the tactical training, maybe Ramos needs to take a look at which teams are top of the table. Arseanl and Utd, the least tactical sides in Prem are in first and second, whilst Liverpool, who are probably the most tactical side in the country have not even looked like challenging for the title since Benitez took over.

Whoever just moved this, moved it the wrong way around.

Gibbs' thread talked about training and used a variety of sources, whereas JoshV focusses on the podcast.

You should have merged JoshV's into Gibbs', because a thread about the Times podcast is going to attract far less interest than a thread about the new training regime.
