He needs the recognition of a statue at the new Lane & that's coming from someone who never saw him play

Another thing that tends to go unmentioned is the equipment they played with; the leather ball that left imprints of the laces on your forehead when you headed it and the weight of it when it got wet, the boots, heavy with no real protection. They just don't know how lucky they are these days.

Nice article. I read his autobiography about ten years ago. There's a story from when he was about 16 I think with the Chelsea youth team. It just so happened that the Chelsea first team manager was watching the youth side during a match against another club. Greaves was on fire and scored 7 goals. Afterwards, the Chelsea manager came over to Greaves and congratulated him.....but added, "Enjoy what this feels like Jimmy, because that will never happen again."

The very next game Greaves scored 8.

The first time I saw Jimmy play was in the season before we won the double and it was for Chelsea. I think the game was over the busy Easter time and it was at home. We needed to win that game and if we would have we would have won the league In the event he ripped us apart and every time be got the ball he looked like scoring. We list that game and it demoralised us and we list the next home game to City if I recall a win in either one would have won us the league.
I was enraptured by Greaves from that day on I was 11 at the time. I said to everyone I knew that we would be the greatest team ever if he played for us.
I couldn't believe it when he signed two seasons later I was ecstatic and he gave me more pleasure watching him in our
colours then any other player since including Hodfle Bale and Gazza great as they were.
Yes without doubt he deserves a statue or a stand in his honour at our new stadium.
God bless you Jimmy.

He was phenomenal. I'm far to young to have seen him play, but have always watched footage and read up on our double wining team and those that followed and Jimmy Greaves has always been one of my favourite players from that era. (I know he joined the season after we won the double, before anyone corrects me).

Scored on his debut for every club he played for (including a hat-trick for us)
100 league goals before he'd even turned 21
422 goals in 602 club appearances (266 for Tottenham)
9 goals in 14 games for Milan
44 goals in just 57 international games

I know the club have given him and his wife Irene a lot of financial support since his stroke, but it would be nice to have a benefit match played under the lights at the Lane to raise some extra Money for the family, maybe against a Chelsea and West Ham combined 11.

I remember the game we had to commemorate Bill Nich, it was nice celebrate what he'd done for the club, with him there in person instead of waiting, like so often happens until someone dies before they are honoured.

Read a story once I think by Alan Mullery. Bill Nic was a stickler for players work rate and would rub his hands on the shirts after the game to see how much sweat there was from each player - he always went for Jimmy's shirt last to dry his hands. :)

I've always disliked Alf Ramsey and Geoff Hurst for robbing Jimmy of a World Cup Winners' medal. Hurst scored. Big deal. Won it for us in extra time. Big deal. If Jimmy had played, he'd have put it to bed by halftime.

As a kid in the playground there was only one player to be. Greavsie remains my most loved player of all time. Saw him score a hat-trick in my first ever live match but of course three for him was just an average day!

Didn't he fall out with the club for decades and only recently get inducted into our hall of fame after making up?

He wanted to get paid for hosting the lounges. His argument was that if you are going to charge fans to be in a room with me then you need to be paying me.

I think... might have got that wrong?
