The importance of Ledley King

I know most people think this is a thread stating the obvious, but it really is a crucial point.

The second Ledley went off today the whole team looked disjointed and prone to conceeding every time Newcastle went past the half way line.

Is Ledley that good? Or is down to Bassong being that bad at the minute? Is it just down to the plain fact that the team defends poorly without the knowledge that Ledders is behind them?

I know it's been done time and time again, so this a thread somewhere between being in appraisal of the King and in question of what do we do now he seems to be out for a while.

I just feel much less confident knowing we will be going to Blackburn next weekend without the presence of King, arguably our most important player.

Bassong is shit, I would of sooner seen us stick Livermore in CB and put modric down the middle then bring Townsend onto the right.

We buy two new CB's for our future in January is what we do and we prepare for the future without King and Gallas and ship out Bassong to the the first mug to put in a bid.

Bassong isn't shit, he's just a player who hasn't played much football and it shows.

straight talking.. no bull.. i love it!!

come in qpr you still there!!??

for me 2 new signings a most in january is a pacy athletic non injury prone center half and someone who plays the on the right of midfield.

forgot about striker so u can obviously addd that 2 with one eye on a goalkeeper for summer in mind!!! we get those 3 positions sorted with good clever signings in jan and we will go far

To obtain a squad with a future at some point between the end of this season and the start of next we need to have bought two cb's, a right winger and a striker by making space for them by having King retire, Bassong and Pav sold and Lennon just naturally needs competition to make him successful. It's no shock that he played the best football in years when he had Bentley hot on his heels.

some sense.

Yep, agree with this. Bassong was fantastic in his first season for us. He had a few bad games last season, but not enough for him to be written off altogether.

I'm more worried about the lack of cover with King, Dawson and Gallas all out injured. The Europa League is going to be a real strain.

id rep ur ass if i knew how. i agree on all that. we need someone to challenege lennon for spot and does not have to be huge name or cost millions either. a clever midfield player who knows how to play that role and wud be solid away from home type.. bassong and pav will be gone i have total faith in harry.. obv hope leds stays on but we def need a new cb. have no idea on who though.

Christ, what a load of shit. King wasn't that great today and we as a team weren't great with King on the pitch. Our best spell of the game came when Bassong was on the pitch not KIng, so hat kind of fucks that theory right off doesn't it.

Bassong isn't top drawer and isn't going to be, but he was fine today and cost us nothing, which isn't bad for a player who gets to play sporadically and gets brough on in one of the toughest away games of the year.

have no idea what game u were watching, best spell????? we might have been comfortable at times but im been generous there but alot of that second half the ball kept coming back and down the sides especially our right and all important challenges when they had to be made by defence were made by kaboul. bassong lost out on several challenges and i for one was never easy with our defence bar kaboul.

I thought our defence looked all over the place when Ledley went off. I wouldn't pick on Bassong, Walker or anyone in particular but it was hard to see who was supposed to be doing what on both the goals we conceded.

Didn't think we looked that great with Ledley on the pitch. Midfield lost the battle.

I thought Bassong played well today and Kaboul was excellent both with and without Ledley. King didn't have a great performance by his standards, yet when he went off there was still something different. I am not sure we would have defended so deep with Ledley on the pitch and that wouldn't have invited the pressure that came at us. The two goals we conceded certainly weren't down to our central defenders though.

Bassong wasnt that bad, I thought it was the best game he'd played for a good while actually.

We may find that if he gets 4 or 5 games on the bounce he will get back to being the decent reliable CB we saw in 2009, rather than the donkey he was last season

Spurs controlled the game until King went off,... then the barcodes got chances and belief. I think it would've turned out differently if Gallas were healthy and came on for King,... but the world is full of "what ifs..."
