Sportsmail takes a look at Spurs boss Harry Redknapp's next generation

With the Carling Cup final against Manchester United coming up next weekend and a relegation battle to fight, the UEFA Cup isn't exactly a priority for Tottenham this season.

But with two games against Shakhtar Donetsk to play before Wembley, Harry Redknapp can't exactly ignore the competition (however much he'd like to) and the Spurs boss will use tonight's clash in Ukraine to give Academy prospects a taste of life in the first team.

Redknapp has included eight members of Tottenham's table-topping Under 18s in the squad for tonight's game with one, Dean Parrett, expected to play from the start.

But who are the eight kids on UEFA Cup duty?

Oscar Jansson (Goalkeeper; Age - 18)
Swedish youth international signed from Karlsund HFK has already experienced first-team action in pre-season friendlies against Roma and Leyton Orient and is rated highly at White Hart Lane.

Adam Smith (Defender; Age - 17)
England youth international full back played against Borussia Dortmund in pre-season and was on the bench against NEC Nijmegen earlier this season.

John Bostock (Midfielder; Age - 17)
England Under 17 international signed from Crystal Palace for £750,000 in the summer and became Tottenham's youngest ever player when he came off the bench against Dinamo Zagreb earlier this season.

    Andros Townsend (Attacking midfielder/Winger; Age - 17)
Another England youth international, Townsend is expected to break into the first team squad next season after some impressive displays for Under 18's.

Calum Butcher (Defender; Age - 17)
Pacy central defender has been an ever present in Tottenham's march to the FA Youth Cup quarter-finals.

Dean Parrett (Midfielder; Age - 17)
Tottenham paid QPR nearly £1m for England youth international Parrett in 2007 and handed him his first professional contract last December. Redknapp included him among the substitutes for the draw against Spartak Moscow just before Christmas.

Ryan Mason (Midfielder: Age - 17)
Goalscoring midfielder has scored an impressive 11 goals in 18 games for the Academy side this season and made his first team debut as a late substitute against NEC Nijmegen in the UEFA Cup group stages.

Jon Obika (Striker; Age - 18)
Prolific goalscorer for the Academy team last year, Obika was used as a late subsititute against NEC Nijmegen.

Its nice to see this breakdown of our young players. never thought it would come from the mail tho!! I really hope they do themselves proud, would be nice to see a few of them play well and force their way into the first team squad over the coming year.
Think im more excited about tonight to see how they do if they play, more than if it was the 1st team squad playing due to the lack of importance of this cup this season! COYS 2-2

Yeah an interesting piece (for a change) from the normally dross, attention seeking Mail.

If they get their chance, I'm looking forward to seeing some of them play tonight (live on Five). I hope we get a good result but it might be hard, Shakhtar are a good team.

My only thoughts on the pictures of the players are some look like they could do with a bit more weight training, not meant as a dig, as if they want to move up to premier league standard they will require that little bit more speed and strength.

It seems that many of them already have the ability :)

I agree, in particular Ryan Mason, in that picture he looks like a little boy wearing his dads shirt!

Very nice to see we're giving them a chance. Guess maximum two will start the match, and the same amount get 10-20 minutes. Must be a big motivation for these kids, and a chance to prove what they stand for. Hoping for parrett starting, bostock getting 45 and obika 10-15 mins. coys! Even tough I'm not english, it's good to see most of the youngsters are.

I agree. However, do you remember how small and waif-like Ryan Giggs, Beckham, Neville, etc. all looked when they first got into the Man U squad.

Yeah I agree there are always exceptions (Modric being one) but things have moved on even since the 90's and it's an advantage to shape up, take your point though :)

I thought Parrett mostly equipped himself capably this evening. Following a shakey start where he almost contributed to a Shakthar goal when he stuck out a foot and inadvertantly landed the ball in the path of the forward who blazed well, well wide. He put that behind him and put in a solid performance, not perfect by any means but signs of something promising there which was perhaps epitomised where he nicked the ball off the defender with a nice block tackle and almost got to the follow up to chip over the keeper.

Good debut, will be interesting to see how he progresses.

Good bunch of fellas you got there.

Parret was alright last night. He didn't make a fool of himself and seems physically ready. However the Prem's demands are much higher so it remains to be seen whether he's ready for Prem fball.
