It was odd of O'Neill to bring Keane with him in the first place after their Ireland stint ended so badly.

Staggering blow for Newcastle fans...they love Rafa up there and I suspect he did all he could to stay. How he managed to consistently carve out respectable results and league positions within the limitations he was working under is testament to his managerial skills. Surely one of the main reasons for bringing in Lampard is because the fans like him so will "go easy" during the next year when they've got the transfer ban + no Hazard and so are likely to have a poor season. While Benitez is far more qualified for the job long term, the fact that he was just as unpopular with Chelsea fans as Sarri was means it's pretty unlikely.

It has been for years, but why sack O'Neill the day before the first pre-season friendly? It appears he didn't get on with some senior players (he probably sided with Roy Keane over the players in whatever disputes led to Keane leaving), but surely the board would've known about this issue before they reported back after the holiday?

Had to google him. Solid playing career, but coached Ivory Coast in their disappointing 2014 World Cup campaign and was sacked by Rennes after poor results midway last season. All seems a bit weird.
