Asking this as I’m hoping there may be some on here that know the Answer. Hearing a lot today about our poor record at Anfield and away against the Top 6. Obviously having never played the game at a high level I find it slightly curious. Will memories of a certain ground really stick in a players mind and affect their performance.I’ve never done many away days. But I’m sure there are guys here who’ve been to Anfield many times and seen us lose. Is your mindset already negative because of past defeats.
It’s funny because I’ve just started CBT on recommendation of a friend. I said to them I didn’t really feel I had any major issues with anxiety/ depression etc. And always thought CBT was for heavy duty stuff. What they said to me was it will help you become the best version of you. So I thought why not. After 3 sessions it’s been a revelation. Today we covered the vicious cycle. Which basically is about how you perceive a situation will be before you go. And getting into a negative mindset before you even arrive. Almost like a self full filling prophecy. So because you expect the worse it ends up happening because if your mind set was so negative.
I know the club has sports psychologists. But in a situation like this I wonder if it would be specificity addressed that we have a bad record at Anfield. Or if it would just rely on a Poch teamtalk. You hear people say every 1% counts I just wonder how deep they actually go with players on a psychological level.

Right up to the eighties, we've had a run of not winning at Anfield for something like 37 years. TheChosenOne might remember better than me.

I think it was more like 70 years. It was the year the titanic sunk. Then next time we won was in the mid 80s, a Crooks winner in the year we were actually in with a chance of the title until we lost at home to Everton.

I went there a number of times in the 80s and 90s. Saw us win 3 times but get stuffed many times. I always went there hoping for a win but not expecting! But these days we do have a better team than them, in my opinion. If I was going there on sunday I'd have more confidence.

The old saying was trotted out every year .... Spurs haven't won at Anfield since the Titanic sank (1912)

It was a great impact read, evocative and as a Spurs fan very downputting, notwithstanding the fact that during those intervening years there were gaps for WW1 and between 1935-1950 plus 1954-1962

My first visit was for the UEFA semi final in 1973 a a loss of course and after quite a few more visits up there
we finally managed to nick wins in 1985 and 1986 when on both occasions I was standing in the middle of the old Kop. Deep joy !

Four more wins since then I'm afraid, 1993/1995/1998 and 2011 - two league wins, one FA and one League Cup

Not as shabby as some like to think. That's my spin.

Fortunately one of the years I missed was the 7-0 drubbing when Ossie and Ricky got a bit of a grim welcome to the reality of life in England.

That game was originally scheduled for January but snow caused the match to be abandoned and to this day I wonder if the momentum was lost there. It turned out Everton won the league at a canter, once again our silly home draws and losses contributing to our downfall.

Poch has says he doesn’t use psychologists as he prefers to deal with the players himself.

I can't remember exactly but we ended up having to finish the season by playing something silly like 6 games in 10 days? IIRC we were almost completely snowed out in February, we only played a couple of games the whole month.

We were still well in that till the Everton home defeat, although the fixture pile up just after would have probably seen us off anyway. Miller had a good season, but was exposed as the weakest link in the end.

Oh really that’s surprising and interesting. Before I’d started CBT I would probably have agreed. That a Poch team Talk could hold more weight. But now I can see how something like CBT could be beneficial in a situation like this. It just gives you the tools to deal with any negative thoughts so you are better prepared. Much like having worked on tactics.

It's also the case that the opponents in these situations will be carrying a bit of extra confidence into the game. At the very highest level, small differences can have great significance.

I think Poch said most of the time he prefers to do it himself unless for a specific circumstance. However national teams use them and players could also individually do it on their own accord. Poch may of even changed his view since he made those remarks last season.
