The Sherwood recurrence

Hi 'Bennys': Although I agreed with your point that it was more Bale's skills rather than AVB's coaching that achieved "great attacking football" last season, I question much of what you followed up with...
How do you KNOW that Baldini "got in " players for AVB?
Last week I read a post that stated that Tim Sherwood sat on a Spurs "player selection committee", and so was partly - if not totally -responsible for the players he had to work with. I questioned whether the poster knew where the source of this was and whether this was a fact and never received an answer.
People on here - over and over - state their opinions on the performance of Club Personnel and the like based on nothing more than rumour and here-say. Over time this becomes 'fact' and as more and more of these 'facts' are argued, so this site goes on in ever decreasing (and repetitive) circles.
So, was it IN FACT Baldini, or a Selection Committee that included Tim Sherwood, who recommended or current crop of players to Chairman Levy? If it was one or the other, then opinions on the performances of both our current and past Coaches will vary accordingly.

hi Joe, yes fair point, i agree that we dont know for certain regarding the players in, but for what we read and learn and through common sense and filtering out the impossible etc .. I base my thoughts on Baldini's job, what he does for a living, and that is identifying players who are either good prospects, talent, quality available players HE thinks he may be able to 'get' etc and then gets the nod to do the deal. I would imagine that TS does not have the same in depth knowledge of that job description that baldini does and so would dismiss any involvement of TS's on transfer targets or dealings. Being in charge of the youth set up, he might well however, have more knowledge of youth/teen players who's names have cropped up here n there.

I would be very very surprised and disappointed if we did infact have a team of directors and other people thinking they know what the manager wants that sat around a table discussing players that they thought they should get him, It would make deals almost impossible to complete.

For me, the system should be, manager tells Baldini who he wants or at least the type for a position, Baldini identifies player/s, discuss with manager, agree, Levy signs cheque. But, we are spurs, we dont do simple lol.

Spurs isn't a flight simulator for someone who hasn't flown before - this is our club, and I cannot believe so many here are happy to settle for mediocrity instead of hoping for a quality manger with proven credentials.

Can Sherwood turn things around and prove to be a prodigious talent that will shock us all? Maybe - but the odds are so stupidly against this, and I for one am not willing to sacrifice our performance and results just to find out!

Nor can i, our success over the past fifty years and our bulging trophy cabinet has been bloody astounding, and now we have to put up with this whipper-snapper trying to manage our club!

We have had "quality managers" with "proven credentials" that have failed admirably, so let's have more of the same er?

What the Club have never had is perseverance, commitment, and a long fucking term plan. The only odds that are stupid are the ones that will be allocated to the time span of any manager appointed by Spurs. It's Levy's default.

I wanted to give AVB the rest of the season but could see why he was sacked in the end, now I'm fully behind Tim as long as he's the manager although I hope he moves on this summer and we bring in someone who can organise a team to a higher standard.

Tim has done some things right and has done some things very wrong but I wish him luck in his career moving forward. I didn't like the way he said he didn't need any players in January, everyone could see we needed another LB and we've payed the price for it having to resort to playing Naughton out of position and being torn apart and exploited. It's an even bigger shame for Naughton who has shown that he can be a fairly solid RB but has now earned a reputation for being a dodgy defender.

If AVB had still been here I'm sure he would have fixed that in Jan, Rose deserved his chance but the injury at the start of the season meant our left side lacked width and pace. The whole decision not to get another LB has been a monumental screw up at every level of management at the club from both managers all the way up to the board room imo. Rose gives his all but has been caught out of position too often and I doubt he'll want to be a back up next season.

Wasn't it AVB who sent Bennie out on loan to QPR before a ball was kicked in the new season leaving us with a converted winger as our only left back? Why didn't he "fix it" last Summer knowing Bennie would be gone?

Naughton looks good against any side visiting WHL that packs their defence, do you seriously think he's good enough for a side wanting to play CL football?

Our whole back line was found out against the very best, and that's the very best in the PL not Europe. If we want to play with the big boys then our defence simply has to be reloaded this coming Summer.

Yeah I wasn't making exuses for AVB, read my post again or the bit you quoted. Actually I'll just copy it here...

About the Naughton part, since when has "fairly solid RB" meant he's good enough to be our main right back and lead us to the Champions League? I'm not sure what you're getting at Gaz, you basically agree with me from what I can see.

Last Saturday we have Tim's team conceding twice in the opening 4 minutes to a bottom half team and Timbo comes on screen after the game to call the defending 'horrrrrrendous' with a smirk and silly voice effect. On camera. We have already seen him ridicule the club's record signing - 'what about Lamela?' 'who?', and 'how is his english coming along?' 'que?'. It's embarrassing.

Why were these (quite funny) jokey responses embarrassing?

Do you want a manager who never displays a sense of humour on camera? (Why?!!)

He's a football manager - not the Archbishop of Canterbury.

Football is a game that people play for fun and watch for fun. Jokes and banter make it more fun.

It's a multimillion pound industry: it's not played just for fun. The guy is a moron, an utter jerk. Next thing, you'll be telling us that he deserves a chance just because he's British.

I will point out to you again Gaz that if Levy were to appoint LVG he would come with a CV far superior to anybody that has been appointed before (not that it guarantees success).

because it's incredibly unprofessional to mock your own team, the one you are managing (and therefore the one YOU set up 4 minutes beforehand), and your employer's record investment.

It is monumentally stupid. I want a manager who isn't stupid in public, it's not such an outlandish thing to expect. Humour is fine, and clearly subjective. I'm glad you found it funny. I hope the owners didn't, though.

Er, no, him being British has got nothing to do with it.

So do you support spurs because they're a multi-million pound industry? I support them because I enjoy it. You might as well go and support Google.

In the 2008-2009 season, Redknapp said that his wife would have scored a header Darren Bent missed. That was 'mocking' a lot worse than Sherwood on Lamela.

The next season, under Redknapp, Spurs finished 4th and went on to reach the quarter finals of the Champions League. Maybe managers with a bit of personality and banter aren't so bad after all.

If you still don't believe me, then consider the great Brian Clough, who always mercilessly spoke his mind, joked around, and mocked people - including his own players.

For example, here's Cloughie on forest midfielder Brian Rice: “I’m not saying he’s pale and thin, but the maid in our hotel room pulled back the sheets and remade the bed without realising he was still in it!”.

Or on meeting new signing Teddy Sheringham: “I’m calling you Edward because that’s what it says on your birth certificate.”

While we're on the subject of Brian Clough, here he is again:

“If a chairman sacks the manager he initially appointed, he should go as well.”

I'm not sure this is true the first time, or even the second time, but if a chairman appoints then sacks a whole series of managers in quick succession, well...

And that was different from my post? Nice caveat. Covers all the angles and eventualities does it not?

The quality of the manager at PL level is negligible (look to Martinez for proof) the issue lies with the depth of the pocket and the itchy trigger finger of whoever is Chairman.

I know you write this stuff and think it makes sense, but we have to read it and it doesn't.
