What concerns me as much as our invisible transfer business is the poor quality of our academy. For a club that has invested so heavily in the infrastructure of the training ground we really aren’t seeing anywhere near enough quality from our academy. Winks is 23, where are the 17-19 year olds that are getting us excited ? I’m a KWP fan but not sure Poch is. The others we thought might make it like CCV and Onomah don’t look like Premier league players let alone good enough for CL. So we are left only with Skipp which really isn’t enough to justify the bet we’ve made. I don’t think we do enough to supplement our own youth by buying young players from the lower leagues or from abroad. If we aren’t going to spend mega bucks on senior players then we absolutely must do way way better in scouting and developing youth.

The strange thing is a few years ago there were a njmber of prospects who had us excited. We seem to have taken a few steps back when it cones to the youth teams.

Exequiel Palacios broke a bone in his leg and is out for 2 months. He's a big time CM prospect for River Plate. Would require some Poch convincing as I think Real Madrid are after him.

Look at the list of players on a Bosman and that will tell you the players on our shopping list. The rumours of Sturridge fits this, Rabiot fits this and I expect links to Hector Herrera shortly. Expect yet another summer where transfer activity is determined by price not quality. When this happens maybe you will finally recognise the issues with our owners.
I’m never worried by links in the media. They have an incredibly poor hit rate.

I have very cold blood for a Frenchman. Let’s wait and see.

Well his stats are pretty good (for the Italian league anyway) and he has a 35m release clause apparently, maybe he is our budget Zaha?

I’ve only seen him a couple of times, but I was impressed with his ability to ride out a tackle, he didn’t seem afraid to be physical on the ball. Hopefully there’s a Milan supporter here somewhere who can give some more insight.
He stat pads in a few games vs cap to average teams. In 14 of the 22 games he has played this season, he has neither scored nor assisted and 5 of his 8 assists came in 2 games, vs Chievo and vs Atalanta (who were on a dip of form). If you look back season on season, it is the same trend.

How many 17-19 year olds are making impressions in the teams at the top around us?
Not really relevant as our top 6 competitors go out and buy senior players. But seeing as you ask City have Foden and sold Brahim for £20m, Chelsea have Hudson-Odoi and a bunch of good players like Mason Mount on loan (the fact they don’t play them is the dysfunctionality of that club not the quality of the players), the goons have Reiss-Nelson out in the Bundesliga and a few actually making their first team, United have a young forward coming through who is according to their fans better than Rashford (think his name is Greenwood), the Spammers have Rice. Liverpool have TAA and Gomez. I’m not an expert on other clubs youth but ours does seem pretty poor.

Foden has played a total of 91 minutes in League games this season, Diaz isn't there any more, TAA is 20 years old, Gomez is 21 and Hudson Odoi has 74 League minutes.

Sanchez is 22, Foyth 21, Dele 22 etc.

If they're good enough, they play...what 17-19 year old is going to break into our team at full strength?

Honestly feel in football today, some fans are becoming obsessed with younger and younger players due to the level of exposure etc.

Rabiot is never coming here on a free. That ship sailed away in January. Lots of teams will be in for him in the summer and almost all of them will pay him better wages than we will.

If I were to guess I'd say he'll end up at Arsenal. They need to replace Ramsey and he'll do. He also has that Gooner stench about him for whatever reason.

I’m not suggesting we should have 17-19 year olds in the team but that we should have players of that age that we think might make the team in the future so telling me Foden or Hudson Odoi have very little playing time misses the point. Other than Skipp can you tell me one player in that age bracket you think might make our first team squad ? Sterling has just gone on loan to Sunderland in League 1 and can’t even make their bench.

Parrott. Just turned 17, has been tipped for greatness and has already been the "19th man" in the squad on a few occasions even before his 17th birthday.

Our U18 side is top of the Southern Section of the league and undefeated this season I think. All the observers in the youth thread reckon it’s our best batch of kids since the Kane, Mason side. There’s been a couple of age groups lacking talent above them, and the U23 side is pretty terrible this year.

All the more reason to stock up on young talent (preferably homegrown) emerging in the lower leagues or abroad. But we're not doing that...

Liverpool bough Gomez from Charlton, he's also 21 so doesn't fit the 17-19 bracket.

As well as Skipp (who has more PL mins then Foden, Hudson-Odoi, Brahim, Mount (he's 20) and Reiss-Nelson) we also have Troy Parrott who is the same age as Greenwood and only has 2 less goals in the U18 league in 5 less games.

We also have Jack Roles who had a very similar min to goal ratio to Sancho in the U18 league from CM.

Edwards is improving on his early promise on loan in the Dutch League (though his team mates are proper shit) so could yet make it, though, like mount, Rice, TAA and Gomez, just falls outside your criteria as he is 20.

Binks, Walcott and Lyons-Foster are very highly rated CBs, though someway off the 1st team. Paris Maghoma is a very highly rated CM/AM, Bowden is a highly rated DM/CM, Armando Sashoua is doing very well in AM too. There are others I haven't mentioned playing with the above for the U18s too.
