Rose and Davies are fine, Son is our backup striker.
Rose and Davies are fine right now cause Rose is healthy. But its probably any game now Rose gets hurt and Davies plays every game for 3 months again. We need to move on from Rose and get someone we can rely on.

We've literally always had a backup forward. Why would we give up on that now?

Looking at the squad & realistic changes coming up this summer, we could see a new GK, CB, DM, CM, AM, FWD coming in to replace Vorm, Alderweireld, Wanyama, Dembele, Eriksen, Llorente.

I know we could do with a RB but let's be honest with how the last couple of transfer windows have gone if we sign the required 6 players to fill squad voids that will probably exist come June I think I'd be relatively happy with that, even if it means we miss out on a RB &/LB this time around.

I wouldn't be thrilled with that as I think fullback has been just as big of an issue as central midfield but I don't see anyway we address all of those spots. Won't be surprised at all if we don't touch fullback.

Might sound weird but I'm happy with Davies as backup. He's fairly dependable as such. It's a "starter" lb we need, Rose isn't good/consistent enough anymore.

Agreed, Davies playing cup games & lower league opposition is fine. Davies being our game in/game out starter is not fine.

Rose injuries have clearly gotten to him but he's still better than Davies. But I'd replace him over Davies realisticallly.

We need about 8 In. JJ has said he is expecting big changes, so I don't see why we would cease to bring people in just because 'it feels like too much to handle.' I am fully expecting fullback to be addressed - on the right if not on the left aswell.

"if you all knew who will be leaving this summer you would and wouldn't be surprised but as we sit here today i'm expecting big changes. Now if we don't secure Champs League it completely changes that so we have to have 2 options and cant be as proactive as we want."

The positions that need improving upon are as follows

Vorm, Toby, Dembele, Wanyama, Rose, Aurier, Eriksen, Llorente

So here's hoping we qualify for CL!

When you compare Davies to Grimaldo, you might say it would be preferable to aim for Grimaldo as a starter, I'd say.

Keep Rose as backup and have Davies understudy Verts and Rose. We rarely go a season without having to call upon a third LWB - so I'd keep Davies around for his versatility.

But we need to go up a level.

JJ:

"We know that we need new full backs too and a CM maybe 2- Eriksen is replaceable as are the full backs."

That's one way to go about it, sure. I know it might sound harsh and all that, but it's a forum... I would look to sell Rose. I see no scenario where he goes up a level. I'd rather keep Davies as a backup for the easier cup games and occasional rotation. We should find a proper high quality starter and play him as much as possible, I hate this rotate every other game thing.

the thing is, the season we finished 2nd, when Rose got injured Davies played every game except the semi's. That's most probably my biggest grip on Poch, not playing a settle back 4/5, because the 1 season we did, we finished 2nd

Vertonghen v Dortmund showed just how much we'd benefit from upgrading LB. He put more dangerous balls into the box than Rose and Davies have done for flippin ages. Same could be said for RB but the players we have do occasionally deliver.

Our backs ups probably won't depend on who's the better player in a position for us currently. It will depend on which player we get the better fee for so even if Rose is a better LB atm, we will likely keep Davies at LB if we can get 25 mill for Rose and not Davies.

Personally I don't want fullbacks who can cross a powerful ball being my main attribute. I want to see excellent dribbling skills, the ability to get around the back of a defence, give and go football when attacking.

The two I'd absolutely love if we played a wing back style who I think are realistic and achievable are Sessegnon and Jack Clarke at Leeds. From what I've seen they'd offer so much valuable width that would allow our centre to really become compact with quality. It would take some of Sons attributes away granted but when we had genuine width on the wings it gave our football so much intricate quality. Neither have played much in a wing back capacity but they have the talent, similar to Valencia & Ashley Young at Man U. Both started more attacking than they are now and both if moulded into wing backs offer HG talent and diversity for what they can offer the team.

If both are open to the defensive and attacking benefits an attacking team like ours can offer a wing back I wouldn't be adverse to seeing them come in at all as both can take their man on and get around the back which is so vital when playing with one up top. Look at how many goals Man City score purely via getting around the back of the opposition compared to crosses from deep. With Diers discipline and willingness to drop into a back 3 or higher into DM during the game I'd love move expressive fullbacks signed as young guns for the future. Both are a little green and wouldn't be starters but to add genuine long term quality to our ranks in any position they end up playing theynshoukd be high up on our list.

IMO there's a bit too much focus on our WBs 'getting round the back'. Vertonghen and Dier (on one recent occasion) showed that an accurate early ball from deeper can cause havoc. It seems to me that Trippier and Rose often dither about when trying to get to the byeline and then either fail to deliver anything at all or find the strikers heavily marked or completely static. In an ideal world I'd like us to have Grimaldo or Telles at LB and Meunier at RB but it won't happen.

I think if you got a highlight reel of all our goals under Poch you'd see that in terms of FB's getting to the byline, those goals are few and far between but a significant amount of our goals come from crosses before the 18 yard box, for example every Eriksen cross to Dele, Dier to Kane, Trippier to Kane, even Davies in the NLD. So I completely agree with you.

It's more what a FB with the ability to get around the back of the opposition gives us off the ball that I value. The width they naturally can give us allows the attacking players more flexibility to move and confuse opposition players. It'll allow players like Eriksen to hover on the edge of the box for clearances, likewise with Dele & Son.

Our best football came when we had speed on the flanks in the form of Walker & Rose. When teams know we have players who can go one on one with the other teams fullbacks it means they can't double up and leave the flanks exposed. It's like a player who has two good feet, you can't show them one way because they can shift it onto their weaker side and be just as effective.

For mea fullback who can beat a man with the ball at his feet opens up our attacking players more than a player who is solid and can cross. I don't want to see a Spurs team reliant on crosses because we can't break teams down. I'd rather see danger getting in behind with us firing crosses low and hard across the goal between goalkeeper and their last defender. It leads to greater opportunity for the opposition to make mistakes, more danger for our attackers as apart from Dele arriving late or the odd Harry header from open play we don't have the players who can benefit from it when an oppositions box is crowded due to them dropping deep.

If we are to rely on crosses from 18 yards and out, we may as well play a big Fellaini type figure to dominate. That's not something im after. When you're around the back of a team and you have the opposition facing their own goal it's when they are least comfortable. I'd like to see the team probe these kind of weaknesses more rather than see cross after cross when we are constantly outnumbered by teams who drop deep and overpower 9 times out of 10. Just my preference though

I agree with the pace but I do value accurate crossing more so than dribbling ability, which is why I rate Robertson and Trent so highly because they have the ability to get behind and offer crosses. I find it interesting in the man city system that Walker rarely if ever gets behind/an assist and yet they score so many goals across the 6 yard box. It's usually Sane/Sterling who have that responsibility so I wonder if there's an opportunity for Son to take that mantle whilst having great crossing ability from fullbacks, I'm not a fan of fullbacks who have pace but blast their crosses in. My hierarchy is probably; pace, crossing, dribbling in terms of attacking output for a fb.

I think we've changed a bit since Walker left to accommodate a slightly different style but i completely agree with this. It's not about pure speed in terms of charging head first into a player, it's having speed in the team in those areas for very quick transitions of play, either on the counter, a quick switch/diagonal or a ball inside the full back and having the pace to exploit that space.

We've lost our dynamic edge in this regard i feel, that aggressive attacking burst. We see it occasionally with Son and Moura (one more effectively than the other) but it's too isolated and often a bit too central in busy areas. Coming from the fullback area really gives the oppo a massive problem as it overloads areas of their team very quickly.

Unfortunately we've got a bit of a mixed bag at the mo in terms of what our FBs can offer. I'm sure with a spell injury free or building up good form they can all still offer something but to most here a change up is probably needed. Not sure at what price though.

Those fullbacks being able to get in behind stretches the defense and allows more space for the forwards to operate.

It's like the Chelsea game in 16/17 where Dele scored 2. On one of those goals Walker is making a run down the line that opens space for Eriksen to take his time on the ball and deliver a pin point ball to Dele.

Also puts defenders as a greater risk of conceding own goals. You'll have more defenders let the ball go across them at the risk of conceding an own goal or give corners away than they do clearing a deep cross unless the cross is perfect and on point.

Low, hard, around the back of the opposition is where real width and danger can be maximised. That's why I think Sessegnon is a really rough diamond he gets his angles incredibly well judged with his runs across other players lines for someone so young. Cuts out their ability to run alongside him by cutting his angles down leading to them pulling up or giving away a pen. His defensive skills aren't very desirable though but he is still only 18 and would offer variety with is left sided versatility.

Tricky to identify fullbacks with the ability I'd like to see at the moment

I don't think it is the Man City fullbacks marauding forward tbh, not with Mendy injured (who is a crosser anyway). What you're describing sounds like work done by the likes of Sané.
