This England performance isn't at all surprising. I've no idea why Aidy Bootheroyd remains. No good shape or strategy, just a mess tasked with defending as best they can.

He is a failed manager/coach. I wish the FA would bring Peter Taylor back.

that doesn't explain why he didn't play in the first game, nor why he's not even coming off the bench ahead of someone like isaac buckley-ricketts. he's gone from being the standout star of this team to being an unused sub and his place has been taken by kids from lower age groups. i thought the international break would be good for him to get some game time again seeing as he's gone from being professional footballer to professional trainer this season but he can't even get a game for england now either.

I agree, Edwards is the most gifted youngster in England and up there with the best in the world at his age. I hope his mentally strong as I would feel down a bit if I was being an unused sub and knowing you're better than everyone in that team. The England coaches are awful and don't know much about football regardless so we shouldn't read into it too much.

Peter Taylor did shockingly poor at the U20 world cup with some great talent

Giving an U21 debut to Mawson who is 23. What's the point.
I dont see the issue, the U21's is in reality a U23 tournament and Mawson isn't good enough for the national team so why shouldn't he be playing at this level

The bigger issue is why has he been given a chance when he was at Brentford or Barnsley

Personally, I'd love to have seen the FA beg Mark Warburton to take over the U21 and oversee the other age groups, advising on coaching appointments etc.

Boothroyd was a ludicrous appointment. Even worse than Pearce. Southgate talked the talk but rarely walked it.

Warburton is an excellent coach grounded in youth football, who wants his football played properly. Pass, move, press, energy, tempo.

Just watching the U21 game now, first half was pretty uninspiring. England were so tactically ragged I couldn't tell what formation they were playing, was it a 4231 with Winks and Chalobah? What exactly is Baker an AM or Cm ?

i've seen baker a bit now and i don't really know either. he has an excellent strike on him and scores a decent amount but i don't know if there's a great deal more to him than that. winks played cm in the 1st half then moved further forward in the 2nd but got lost in the game and struggled to really contribute.

austin, lock, brown, hinds, marsh (c), skipp, griffiths, duncan, sterling, reynolds, bennetts.

assuming that's in numerical order as it usually is, then hinds is playing cm with marsh and skipp at cb.

Hinds can play CM and has done so before at u16 level. Good technical player so I assume that is correct

Does Edwards have the determination and mentality to be a top class player?

who knows? you'd have to ask those who know him. i don't think it's fair to make judgments just from watching him play.

i'm a bit worried about his contract situation. one year left on his deal and he's not playing any football and has now lost his england place, i wouldn't be surprised if he was starting to consider his future.

To be fair his season has been disrupted by injury. I imagine he's going to want some pretty cast iron guarantees that he will play a good few games next season though. Edwards knows how good he is/could be and isn't going to hang around until he's Winks' age before getting a chance.
