I can kind of see your point here but wonder if you have a lower league club near you.

Check out the link in which Cheltenham Town explain why they voted for Christmas. May be of interest, may not.

Personally I don't think it's a bad thing to be involved.
It doesn't really do the actual League 1/2 clubs any harm. It gets them a bit more income, and it's not like all the Academy teams actually progress to the latter stages at their expense - by the 3rd Round last season only 2 academy's were still in it.
The only risk to the academy is that you might get a couple of big time Charlie's who want to cause an injury to a decent academy player, but I'd imagine there aren't many like that.

My second team is Luton and they're vehemently opposed to the PL involvement in this competition, which is a large part of the reason that I am too.

However, also on a gut instinct level, this feels like it's the thin end of the wedge on a slippery slope that will see our game in England become more Americanised with franchises and youth teams gradually eroding our lower leagues. Obviously there's a very long way to go before that happens, but I don't like any steps at all in that direction, however small they may be.

Out of interest what is the opposition to it from Luton?

I agree completely that we don't want to have B-teams in the lower leagues rather than actual local teams, but from what has been said this isn't the intention.

The rules were a joke last season, i believe luton were fined for playing young players rather than the first team which is ridiculous.

I think alot of these stupid 'strongest team' rules have been relaxed now.

Yeah I only heard about this peripherally but I know there were some daft rules. Didn't some teams also sub goalkeepers off after 2 minutes and other stuff like that?

I think the clubs should be allowed to play what teams they want. If they don't fine Premiership teams for doing it in the League Cup, then it's very hypocritical to do it in the Checkatrade.

Yeah, Luton were on the wrong end of a few fines last season, which did seem a bit ott.

I know a lot of clubs wanted assurances that it wasn't the thin end of the wedge with regard to B teams getting into league. Hopefully that will be put to bed now as I would definitely be against that.

I can see both sides of the argument for sure. Let's hope one of our second teams get Spurs in the draw. (y)

Quote on the EFL Trophy website;

Tottenham Hotspur’s head of player development, John McDermott added: “We took the decision to enter the competition as it is beneficial for the development squad’s scheduling this year. We know the Checkatrade Trophy will provide a massive challenge for us and we look forward to testing ourselves.”

I agree entering the tournament will be good for the development squad, but I don't agree with the decision to enter. The lower league clubs need the money.

EDIT - I've actually just done a quick Google and it turns out that the Luton board have actually reversed their position on this pretty recently (due to receiving the necessary assurances that the inclusion of PL youth teams isn't going to be a thin-end-of-the-wedge scenario), and that's kinda taken the wind out of my sails a bit:

http://www.bedfordshire-news.co.uk/...-trophy-vote/story-30328619-detail/story.html

Consider me now in a :cautious: state of mind rather than a :mad::mad: one. Still don't trust the FA farther than I could throw them, though...

I find it interesting that you think this could lead to an American style league with franchises. For me the natural progression would be more akin to the Spanish leagues, with PL teams developing 'B' teams and having them play in the lower leagues, which if it happened here would truly be the beginning of the end for lower league clubs.

If we've entered then I hope we take it seriously. If their situations haven't changed at the start of the season, and first team minutes are scarce, I'd like to see CCV and Onomah in the team - Poch will probably disagree and think its not the level required but a) they still haven't much experience and minutes at senior level and b) gives them an opportunity/experience/test of being the leaders of the team and expectation upon them to perform.

Something like:

McGee/Whiteman
KWP CCV Tanganga(?)Tsaroulla
Amos Onomah
Harrison Edwards Shashoua
Sterling
And obviously there are others in with a shout too who could be rotated in, but we still could put out a decent looking team whoever is selected.

I'm sure I remember reading last season that the scheduling was a reason why lots of premier league teams didn't enter a side.

Personally I'm all for it. How else are players like Onomah, KWP, CCV and Edwards going to get proper football when we refuse to loan them out.

Agree on the scheduling. A lot of the games last season were at the same time as international and CL games so our kids were otherwise engaged.

They've changed that this time around so there should be scope for us to play on clear weeks.

Going to be black boots and Brylcream all round for the U18 lads then. Sleeve tattoos a no-no...

Seriously though, great news, the sort of character any club would want working with young people.
Spurs U-18 will be the only locker room blaring Springsteen and Cash instead of hip hop
